Gimme More…. MUJI!

November 16th, 2007 @ 2:33 pm by Mrs. Canary

I am so ecstatic for Muji’s grand opening in Soho today. For those of you not familiar with this awesome Japanese brand, it’s all about simple and useful design. I was introduced to Muji at (where else?) the MoMA Design Store, which used to be the only place you could score Muji stuff state-side. The name “MUJI” is derived from the Japanese phrase Mujirushi Ryohin meaning “No Brand Goods.”

Today, they’re opening their first US store in Soho! I’m soooo psyched. Muji has great items for the home and office, but also great little knick knacks, for, well… just because. One of my favorite items that I plan to purchase as kid favors or gifts for junior bridal party members are these fantastic wood blocks called NYC in a Bag. How cute!

Other items that I love are the organizer bins and mesh bags. I have about 5 mesh bags that I use for everything– to store makeup, computer cords, travel accessories… so many possibilities. Perfect for a bridal emergency kit or just to keep your makeup for the day.

Nylon Mesh Case from momastore.org $4.50-5.50

Muji also carries a variety of simple stationery, which would be great to dress up in DIY projects and as gifts. One of my faves is this simple sketchbook…

But I hear that the new store will have so much more to offer, from furniture to housewares (glassware and utensils). Muji is also promoting eco-friendly consumerism by giving away a free “My Bag” to the first 500 customers who shop today. “My Bag” is a reusable bag that replaces plastic or paper counterparts. In the future, Muji hopes to promote this further by offering special discount nights for customers shopping with “My Bag” and an incentive stamp program.

The store opens at noon today at 455 Broadway, New York, NY 10013 between Grand and Howard Streets. For more details and directions, check here. I’ll definitely be stopping by tonight after work! Any other Muji fans out there?

I lived in London for several years and ADORE Muji. It’s bizarre, but I can’t live without their bobbie pins. THey work better than any other I have every found. I buy them in bulk when I am abroad so hopefully they will have them here too!

Argh, I can’t believe we were in NYC last week and missed Muji by only a week. SO jealous!! (And so, good to know that they have some of those great products at MoMA — love the blocks. Thanks for the tip!)

Didn’t realize it only opened today! That definitely explains it. I was walking by at 2pm today, and decided to pop in. I made it about 10 feet into the store before I turned around and left. SOOO crowded! I did notice, through the hordes of people, some semi-expensive-seeming (for Muji) items. Hmm - hope there’s still lots of other good, cheap goods!
