Blurb

November 19th, 2007 @ 4:41 pm by Mrs. Lily

Mr. Lily and I spent a good solid week rushing making wedding albums before Sony Image Station closed (I loved the quality of their prints so if anyone knows another place that is as good, let me know!). When I say albums though, I don’t mean the type where you put pics in plastic slots… I mean the type that looks like a glossy cofee table book. Ooooh. Aaaaah.

With 20 minutes until I was done with the Sony book (on the eve of the company closing), Mr. Lily showed me Blurb. I had put so much effort into the Sony books, but the Blurb ones looked much nicer and… cheaper. Why he didn’t show me that before is a whole other story. I really was so confused about whether or not to just purchase the Sony Books or go with Blurb, but in the end I decided to take the risk and make a Blurb book. I have made one test book for my grandma and just ordered it 10 minutes ago. It was much much easier to use than Sony and Sony had a 100 page limit maximum. Now I can make HUGE books. I am so excited. I hope it turns out! If any of you are making Blurb books now, I have a coupon for free shipping (up to $7) with the code holidayfs (expires tomorrow). I will keep you posted on how it turns out!

Yes - please do let us know how it turns out!! I’ve now started books in Blurb, My Publisher, and Shutterfly. I wish I could order one in each to compare the quality, but that’s just not in my budget :)

Since I’ve spent time ‘creating’ in all three I can give you my feedback:

Blurb (downloads program on your PC) - Awesome options, easy to use, very customizable. (I got scared when I read a bunch of feedback dissing the quality of the printed books, so explored other options)

My Publisher (downloads program on your PC) - I was very disappointed with the options after using blurb. I felt very restricted. It was going ok until I began the pages where I wanted to include our vows. The minimum options for including text on pages was the end for me. I aborted the book! (They do have a current BOGO coupon when you sign up - and I still aborted the project I was so frustrated!)

Shutterfly (internet app) - Things go a little slower since you’re relying on your internet connection. Bonus you can save your book and email the slideshow to others to view. (I’m sure you can do this on the other sites once you upload your final book) The options are much more freeing than those on My Publisher - but still not quite the level they are on Blurb.

Maybe I’ll create a honeymoon book in Blurb after I finish all my holiday projects!

I was so sad about imagestation closing down site! for a reasonable price (IMO), you were given access to your pictures in their actual resolution. I had imagestation move my pix to shutterfly, and now i don’t have my high resolutions pix anymore…i have to pay for them!?? WTF?

Anyways…i opened an account with Flickr. you get your high res pix, and they are partners with lots of other fun sites, e.g. zazzle.

i think i’ll check out blurb! thanks!

Jillian — great reviews! My two cents are that I haven’t had much success with Shutterfly I madee a little flip book for my Mom’s 60th birthday and the quality was poor.

Reesey– ditto on the imagestation sadness. I loved them!

I just got my first Blurb book in the mail and I really like it. The book jacket (I got the 7×7 hardcover) is beautiful and everyone has loved the layouts. I will definitely make another. In fact, I just ordered the same book for my mom in softcover. I really like it.
