Combating The Holiday FEASTS!

November 19th, 2007 @ 6:04 pm by Mrs. Cherry Blossom

I’m less than 6 months to the wedding date… and I’m starting to freak out! Yes I have plenty of time, but I still have my freak outs, one of them being… getting FIT. shocked023

At the beginning, several days after getting engaged, I hit the gym religiously. Since then I’ve fallen off the bandwagon, and in a bad way. One of the things that helped me lose weight was portion control and exercising regularly. I’m trying to get myself back to healthy and fit again, but approaching the holidays… it just makes me nervous.

My BM’s sister turned me on to subscribing to Hungry Girl and it rocks.

To help maintain a healthy “diet” during the holidays, try following these tips:

Top ATE Thanksgiving Tips ’n Tricks!

Eight great ways to avoid the typically unavoidable Thanksgiving bloat…

1. Eat breakfast and a protein-packed lunch before the big feast.
2. Go for lean, white meat turkey to get the most bang for your calorie-buck.
3. Drink plenty of H2O throughout the day and during the big meal.
4. Treat yourself to small porti ons of the seasonal side dishes and desserts you’ve been craving all year long.
5. Start with a salad and/or some soup.
6. Bring along a tasty guilt-free dish, so you know you’ll have at least one thing you can splurge on.
7. Burn calories, not the turkey.
8. Wear your favorite form-fitting clothes and you’ll be way less likely to overeat.

What are your secrets to combating the holiday feasts?

Check out http://www.sparkpeople.com You can easily track the calories you intake and figure out an exercise plan that will allow you to burn the proper amount of calories to get you down to your “ideal” weight by your wedding day! I love it because it makes you aware of how many calories you are putting into your body a day and gives you a feasable plan to get into shape!

omg!! i can’t believe no one has mentioned hungry-girl before! I love the site as well.

Miss CB, also check out http://www.trainwithmeonline.com. I love this website! free to sign up! It has workout routines you can print and bring with you to the gym. If you’re ever confused about a particular exercise, you can see the many pictures or the videos they have to offer. the forums there are filled with lots of knowledgable people! I usually do the intermediate full-body workouts! They’re amazing! Oh, and you can download the exercises to your video ipod, or you can access them with your mobile if you have internet service!

Those Thanksgiving tips are good. But I’ve gotta say - I used to like Hungry Girl, until I realized she was emphasizing so many processed low-calorie foods and not enough fresh fruits and veggies and stuff like that. But she does have some good tips about portion control.

I always work out on Thanksgiving morning. I think I’m taking a 90-min kickboxing class this year, woohoo. Then you start of feeling healthy and don’t want to eat as much, and if you do, well, at least you worked out! :)

Oh Miss CB - I totally feel your pain. I got engaged at Christmas last year and in the following 3 months, I lost 13 pounds. I have now put 8 of those pounds back on. GRRRR. I know exactly what I need to do - I mean, I have done it before! - but I just can’t seem to motivate myself to do it. I feel the urge to be healthy coming back though and I think I’m about ready to get back on the bandwagon… just in time for the holidays. Gulp.

Not that I can’t manage. What I do at the big holiday feasts (if I’m attempting to be good, anyway) is allow myself one sugary treat on the big day - at Thanksgiving that’s pumpkin pie and at Christmas it’s a shortbread cookie. I also eat just a bit of stuffing with gravy because, who am I kidding, I daydream all year long about stuffing and it’s only served twice a year. Only one glass of wine with dinner. Other than that, I stick to a reasonable portion of white turkey meat and the vegetable side dishes. Usually there are lots of veggies at the big feasts, so fill up on those! I also try to fit in a midday workout to compensate a bit. And in the days leading up to and afterwards, I am careful about calorie counting and keep everything under control.

The number one biggest tip I can give you for the big feast days though: put the focus on family and the event, not on the food. Spend the day chatting with all your relatives you don’t see all the time who are there for the celebration, or spend some alone time writing a list of what you’re grateful for, or go to church. Make it about the meaning of the holiday. It really keeps your mind off the food!

I always go for a long run on T’giving morning! And wear an outfit that requires portion control! It works!

I love Hungry Girl! I think that she emphasizes processed food because EVERYONE knows that you should eat fruits and vegetables. And you can’t really pick any fruits and vegetables and go wrong with them. I really appreciate her advice on consumer food because those companies sure do know how to market very trickily!

I am starting a new tradition of running in a local Turkey Trot 5K that morning. I don’t like to eat unhealthy foods after running, so it will help me out doubly.
