The Cat Is SO Out of the Bag…

November 20th, 2007 @ 8:27 am by Mrs. Tulip

True bride’s confession: Originally, I never planned to get Mr. T an engagement present. With wedding expenses and the home improvements that surely will come along once we’re together in the marital condo, an extravagant gift seemed like an unnecessary additional expense.

But then I watched Mr. T put so much time and effort (not to mention money) into the engagement ring. And in the midst of it all, I fell prey to Travelzoo. Every Wednesday, Travelzoo sends around a list of the best 20 deals the editors discovered that week. The deals are generally a combination of vacation packages, hotel specials, and airfare sales. They are often, though not always, for short-notice travel. And they make me want to drop everything and GO!

Anyway, in the midst of our engagement “process” (while the ring was being made, before the actual Big Day), the Travelzoo email featured a Virgin Vacations deal for a week in Paris. Mr. T speaks French and loves to travel, and he’s always wanted to visit Paris. Usually we’re hampered by his lack of vacation time, but this deal — amazingly! — included Thanksgiving week as a travel option.

Unfortunately, Mr. T was in meetings the afternoon that the big deal came along. Good Travelzoo deals sell out fast, and I knew the opportunity might be gone by the time he was free. So I took a deep breath and just made the purchase. And then decided it would be romantic and fun (and least for me, heh heh) to keep the destination a secret until the day we left….

I’ve been doling out hints every few weeks, but keeping the ultimate secret was going pretty well. Until a few nights ago, that is! We were on the phone discussing a cat-sitter for our 4 cats, and I said my former roommate probably wouldn’t mind, if “we promise to bring her back something fabulous from Par… OH NO!” My brain just froze after the first few letters.

So, anyway, we’re off to Paris today! And, yes, we’re broke from wedding costs and won’t be able to afford a thing at the current exchange rates. We even thought about bringing a jar of peanut butter, but are afraid to be mistaken for airplane bombers!

Any suggestions for inexpensive ways to amuse ourselves in the City of Romance?

Holy crap what a great present! The only time I’ve been to Paris was more than 10 years ago so sadly I don’t have any suggestions…..but have tons of fun and take lots of pictures!

i was just there last week. be careful…there is a transportation strike going on right now. so the metros are shut down. and the air traffic controls joined the strike yesterday. so don’t be surprised if there are major delays at the airport.

my suggestions are to visit Monoprix’s for food. they are kinda like target. with a grocery store downstairs. and go to nicer restaurants for lunch. you can get the same food for less money.

good luck!

A cheap thrill is to sit at a cafe and just gaze at each other and soak in the surrounding environment. :D

What a fabulous gift– you are the best fiancee ever! Have a wonderful time in Paris! The best thing about Paris is that there are so many simple (cheap) joys– sharing a baguette with brie, taking long walks, enjoying a glass of wine. Have a wonderful time and take lots of pictures!

Awesome gift. Have a fab time! What I loved about Paris is that you can eat cheap! Check out the little sandwich shops, have a crepe on the street! All delicious!

Definitely Monoprix!! The great thing about Paris is that you can see alot without having to pay a lot. The sidewalk cafes are great for lunch and dinner and are generally inexpensive.

Everyone’s already suggested Monoprix, so you’re good to go there. I miss the sammiches I was able to get at the little random sammich shops “in the wall” as I referred to them when I lived there. Kind of like a walk-up window for a restaurant that consists of a small room for one guy to make sammiches in! The sammiches were really cheap - I ate them almost every day to stay on the budget the school insisted we stay on.

Also, bread is really cheap there, so the suggestion to get baguettes and cheese and snack on it as you hang out someplace (like in one of the many, many parks…my fave was the Jardin du Luxembourg in the 6th Arrondissement - so pretty!) is a good one, too. And in one of the nicer restaurants that I ate at for a school dinner one night actually served pate with the bread prior to dinner like we serve butter with ours here in America. It was AWESOME! If you can find a place like that, you can fill up on pate and bread with some wine and call it a night after just eating a salad for dinner!

Options are there…you’ll have a great time! Enjoy!

There is SO much to do for free/very cheap in Paris. Montmartre (an artist colony on the top of a big hill), Sacre Coeur (beautiful church on that same hill), Notre Dame (and it will be decorated for christmas!), Arc de Triumph, walking along the Champs d’Elysees are all completely free! Crepes (which are sold in carts and storefronts everywhere) are very cheap and delicious. I could easily survive on crepes for a week. Going up the Eiffel Tower cost money but standing beneath it is free! If the metro is back working (I hope it is!)- definitely get a weeklong pass- it will be well worth the money. The metro system is great and it is so easy to hop on and off and get all over the city. Also not free, but awesome: Musee d’Orsay. I definitely prefer this smaller museum to the Louvre and I think it is cheaper as well (sorry if I mispelled anything- my French is rusty!).

Best ‘cheap’ thrills in Paris:
- visit the Printemps department store near Havre Caumartin station. Go to the cafe on the top floor and enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city
- take a ride on the Bateaux Mouches. Bring a bottle of wine and some glasses and enjoy a romantic ride while enjoying some of the sites.
- visit Montmartre. Enjoy a stroll through the cobblestone streets, watch the painters as they work. One street to the right of the artists’ gallery, there is a quaint little restaurant with a blue and yellow sign and flowerboxes out front. They have the best French onion soup and beef bourginon in the city.

Paris is perfect… you will love it, no matter what you end up doing.

I agree with the above that there are lots of fun and inexpensive things to do in Paris (as well as plenty of expensive ones too). I found the information on concierge.com to be really helpful, so just wanted to recommend that. Have a wonderful time!!!

Thanks for all the great tips, y’all! (I don’t think I came across the Monoprix suggestion in my reading, so that will be great to try out. And we’re staying in Monmartre, so that one will be easy to implement!)

“Betting”, I panicked at your mention of the air traffic control strike — not exactly the people you want missing from their jobs when you fly in!! But, knock wood, it looks like only Orly and we’re flying in to CDG. The rest of the strikes? Who knows!

Oh, the unlimited Metro weekly pass is called “Carte Orange”. You will need a small picture for it so just cut up a old pic of your head about 1″ square. Also, just buy zone 1 and 2. You don’t need the zone where Versailles is. Just pay the extra amount for going outside your zone. Cheaper than buying and extra zone on the pass.

You can buy a museum pass and try to hit up as many museums as you can since it’s all included. They come in 2, 4 or 6 days. I got the 3 day pass 2 yrs ago and I got about double my money’s worth as I visited as many places as I could included the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Musée Nissim de Camondo , Musée d’Orsay , Musée Rodin, Versailles, Notre Dame, Sainte-Chapelle and two others that I can’t remember. Also, with the pass you can pass up the long lines to buy tickets! It was great!
