What To Wear For Your Dry Run

November 20th, 2007 @ 2:44 pm by Mrs. Magnolia

Although it hasn’t exactly been a priority, I have been keeping in the back of my mind the idea that in addition to my fabulous wedding dress, I’m going to also need a rockin’ dress for the night before.

Nordstrom.com has become my favorite place to check out fabulous cocktail dresses, and several weeks ago, this one by Maggy London caught my eye:

And by the way, I felt like I was really savvy and trendy when that same dress was featured on Something Old, Something New roughly two weeks after I flagged it for myself!

Last week, I stopped at Nordstrom to try the dress on… but they didn’t have it. In fact, the stores don’t actually carry most of the dresses that they feature online! Who knew? Okay, most people probably knew that, but I didn’t! They were incredibly nice and offered to order it for me, and also let me know that if I ordered it myself and it didn’t fit, that they would be happy to take it back in the store. So that’s good - I may still order it online.

But while I was there, I also spotted this dress:

(So sorry for the poor quality - I cannot find a picture online to save my life!)

It doesn’t look like much on the hanger, but it’s by BCBG MaxAzria, and it’s adorable. For whatever reason, BCBG dresses always fit me well, and I think the navy/black color combo is very sophisticated. Plus, my bridesmaids will be wearing navy the next day, so it even works with the wedding colors!

Here’s the dress on me:

The angle’s not great, because Mr. Magnolia took the picture while sitting on the couch… oh well. Trust me - it’s actually very flattering!

How did you choose your rehearsal dinner dress? Were you on the hunt for something in particular, or did you stumble upon it and just know that it was perfect?

I got my RD dress at Nordstrom’s too along with a few other dresses. It’s really become my new fav place. I check it often for sales.

Miss Magnolia,

What are your groomsmen wearing? I want to have navy bridesmaid dresses too, but everyone keeps asking then what will the guys be wearing. I was thinking just normal black or maybe dark grey tuxes. I am doing light pink flowers and thought that the guys might have pink ties(not bowties, but the long ones) then.

Ha - I think I must be the only nut who is not planning on buying a rehearsal dinner dress. I have 3 dresses in my closet to choose from. I’ll see which one I feel like wearing 20 minutes before heading out the door. New dresses are nice, but old ones are free :)

I think my rehearsal dinner dress was the first wedding related thing I bought. I have 2 right now and 6 months until the wedding…I just can’t seem to pass up an end of season sale at JCrew!

I just posted about my ideal rehersal dinner dress. It’s still so many months away but I’m already planning. I snagged the new issue of Marie Claire yesterday which has tons of adorable cocktail dresses perfect for a rehersal dinner. Just like yours! Enjoy!

That dress looks great on you! The green dress might be worth checking out too just because it looks so cute in the picture. If not…you’ve got a great RD dress lined up :)

kstefanini, Mr. Magnolia and his groomsmen will be wearing black. Their ties will be black and gray striped.

When I first decided on navy bridesmaids dresses, I was a little concerned that the wedding party would “look like a bruise” - black and blue. But then I found a David’s Bridal advertisement that featured that exact color scheme, and it looked gorgeous!

Honestly, I’ve worn chocolate brown bridesmaids dresses in two weddings, and both featured groomsmen in black. I think that navy will be similar in that while you may not traditionally pair it with black, it still looks great when you do!

And I think light pink will be a beautiful accent color! We’re using light blue and champagne!
