Cleaning Your Bling

November 28th, 2007 @ 4:04 pm by Mrs. Penguin

I’ve been looking for a great jewelry cleaner because the dirt surrounding my engagement ring is starting to look like it could sustain its own little produce farm. I am specifically looking for an ultrasonic cleaner that uses water only rather than chemicals, and trusty old Consumerreports.org doesn’t seem to have any reviews out on various electronic jewelry cleaners. So I scoured the net and here’s what I found:

Haier Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner $50
- Cleans jewelry, watches, glasses & more
- Uses ordinary tap water with no chemicals
- 42,000 ultrasonic waves per second
- Cleans in seconds; adjustable cleaning time
- Not appropriate for soft delicate stones such as opals or pearls.

Brookstone Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner $39
- Chemical-free way to clean jewelry, eyeglasses and more
- Harnesses ultrasonic sound wave energy to gently break up dirt and tarnish in even hard-to-reach crevices
- Uses only ordinary tap water
- Cycles only run for 3 to 8 minutes and the auto shutoff feature gives you the freedom to do other things while the Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner cleans your valuables.

Sharper Image Deluxe Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner and Tarnish Remover $100
- Rated “best overall” home jewelry cleaner by the Wall Street Journal Catalog Critic
- Gem and Jewelry Concentrate can be added
- Also a tarnish remover for silver, copper and gold

Frontgate Personal Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner $45
- Restores the shine of fine jewelry, valuable coins, dentures, mouth guards and retainers, shaver heads and more
- 4-3/4 ounce stainless steel tank
- Automatically shuts off after the 5-minute cleaning cycle

How do you clean your rings?

I bought an ultrasonic cleaner for my e ring a couple months ago. I love it, then I brought to my parents house and cleaned all my mommy’s diamond rings. I love how the diamond looks all sparkly.. teehee

If you do at home cleaning in an ultrasonic, make sure to check if the stones are all tight first. touch each stone with something like a needle to see if it moves, ultrasonic can knock stones out of their setting if they are loose and it’s much less expensive to tighten a stone than to replace it!

the jewelry store where we got the ring from offers cleaning for free for life for my overpriced e-ring :P I also get the platinum polished each time I go there.

I think other mall jewelers do it too. But I can see how convenient it is to be able to do it at home.

Hot water with a few squirts of windex in a shot glass. Drop in the rings, swirl them around, let them sit. Gently rinse with cool water. A good fix (cheap too) for in between professional semi-annual cleanings.

I can’t speak for any of the home versions, but the gazillion dollar laboratory sonicators work wonders. When I’m in the lab by myself on the weekends I’ll just stick in my ring in a little beaker with a drop or two of soap and let the sonicator go to work for 20 minutes, and… better than new.
I definitely second the comment about making sure your stones are tight, though. I wear my great-grandmother’s diamond set wedding band on my right hand, and the first time I sonicated it, two tiny pave-set diamonds came out! But since I had the rings contained in a little beaker, I was able to find the stones and bring them in to the jeweler and have the ring reset.

I’ve got the Haier one! I think it does a wonderful job! Plus, it was a great price one I snabbed one of those Bed Bath and Beyond good ol’ 20% off coupons!

I bought the first one you shown there- Haier Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner. I like it, it’s really working! It helps to keep my ring blink! I bought mine from amazon for less than $50 :)

When I got a new brush for my Sonicare toothbrush I saved the old one and use it to clean my ring. I just use regular soap and it gets all of the nooks and crannies clean and makes the stone sparkle!

We have the Sharper Image one for at-home use and we add 3 parts hot water, 1 part ammonia, and then a few drops of dish soap. It works wonderfully; the only concern is that if you have pave in your rings, ultrasonic cleaning may not be a good option as I have been advised by a few jewelers to avoid this.

Every 6 months, I take it back to the jeweler and they clean it and re-polish the platinum. I only re-polish once a year, though.

I have the Haier model pictured above and I love it! I set it for the maximum seconds and then brush my teeth or whatever. It’s really gentle, and you can always send things that are really dirty (like FH’s watch) through a few times. I also like not having to have special solution for it.

I once worked for a jewelry store. If your ring has a lot of stones then I would check them every time before I put them in. You never know if you’ve maybe snagged a prong and one if one of your stones is loose, then the ultrason could vibrate that stone right out (in which case you find it) - or worse, loosen it so much that the next time you where the ring, the stone falls out (in which case you don’t). I use hot water, windex, a little soap and a toothbrush. Let it sit for a few minutes to break up all the gunk also helps. Then I check the prongs and stones because I neurotic. And then I put it on my finger and sit in the sunlight and watch it sparkle for about 10 minutes. =)

For the same reason that JCM9608 and Miss Donut pointed out above, since my rings are of pave style, I use a “steam” machine instead of an ultrasonic one.

http://www.jeweljet.com/

It’s similar to the one that our jeweler uses. Even though we can get free cleaning anytime at the jeweler, FI still bought me one for the convenience of doing it at home. I love how not only does it make your bling super squeaky clean, but also because it is steamy hot, it doesn’t leave water residue.

My jeweler said that I can use the steamer nozzle on my espresso machine, being careful to hold it with tongs or something so I don’t burn myself ;)

Looking for a way to get that “just out of the box” pizzazz from your engagement ring. Brush it with toothbrush and toothpaste… it couldn’t sparkle any better, its cheap and super easy. I have an intricate estate design that is constantly getting lotion and gunk in it…. Whoala!! Sparkly bling all over again.

i heard that the steamer works well
i have a portable clothes steamer and whenever
my ring is starting to lose its sparkly bling,
just before i start steaming my clothes, I steam my ring for a few seconds…and voila!!! happy clear ring again =)
