About Miss Gardenia

What’s Our Next DIY?

November 28th, 2007 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Gardenia

Right after we got engaged, we decided that we wanted to incorporate our 2 cultures in our wedding favors, so the idea was to find some type of native Filipino wicker container and put authentic Spanish pastries or candy inside.

My cousin in Manila actually bought us 220 containers and sent them through one of our family friends that came back from Manila when we got engaged. I was starting to look into truffles to put inside them, but I haven’t really stumbled to the right vendor. I looked into homemade truffles, Dan’s Chocolates, Harry & David’s and See’s Candy and still no luck.

We also need something that would be ok to pack into the containers about a week before the wedding day, and I don’t know if the truffles will really sit well outside of the fridge. I’m thinking about using those chocolate dipped shortbread cookies but don’t know where to get them in bulk.

Since we’re trying to stick to our budget as much as possible (the budget that is probably spilling over) – we need some suggestions on what to put in our wicker containers. Do you have any ideas?

Jordan almonds are traditional and will keep well, but they’re not too tasty, in my opinion.

Maybe mints — of the hard candy variety?

Try calling Kelly’s cookies. They are an OC cookie company. My friend works there. Although they maybe very busy right now since its the holiday season. Their shortbread cookies dipped in chocolate are divine!

how about polvoron?

The containers are beautiful! I know truffles don’t hold up well over a week without refrigeration. How about caramels or Turron? Try tienda.com. I don’t know if they provide individually packed products though….

hersheys kisses? you can personlize them too.

Did you try Ethel’s Chocolates? Otherwise, homemade wrapped caramels would be delicious. If you have a local candy store, they should have these.

Trader Joe’s does good bulk packages of small crunchy cookies. They’re not fantastic but they’re decent tasting, and cheap.

We used truffles from the Gallery Au Chocolat and wrapped them a week beforehand and kept them in a cool room and they were still fine on the day of the wedding (there may be a difference between brands of trufffles, though; I don’t think Godiva holds up that well. Our local chocolate store makes truffles that hold at room temp, though. You may want to buy a few brands and do a test… and them eat them. Darn.)

speaking of trader joe’s, they also have incredible truffles- i think about 30 to a box for less than $6!

You can buy them or make them yourself.

If you’re looking for something Spanish, why not use Marcona almonds? They are perhaps the most incredible almonds produced anywhere in the world.

I love the containers! You can fill them up with pastillas or any of those candies they would sell at Goldilocks (polvoron or ube boats).

you could do honolulu cookie co. I have seen both those and big island (posted above) get great reviews. The chocolate dipped ones might melt though (from what I have read on knot bios)

Have you considered Mexican Wedding cookies? You can have them made and dipped in chocolate.

Those boxes are gorgeous. When I first read about chocolate dipped shortbread cookies, I also thought of Kelley’s in Stanton. Here’s the website:

It doesn’t hurt to ask for a quote.

those trader joe’s truffles are delish, especially since they’re not overly sweet. costco has them in bulk.

I’m not sure if they’re Spanish or not, my Portuguese family loves them, but there’s malasadas. They’re very yummy pastry things and would probably work well.

how about those chocolate covered pretzels found at Costco? they’re really good and you would be able to packaged them ahead of time. i don’t think you’d need to refrigerate them, as long as they’re in room temperature.
