Isn’t It Ironic?

November 29th, 2007 @ 5:36 pm by Mrs. Peppermint

Bad News…

The forecast is out. You guessed it. 60% chance of Showers. Now, this is over a week early and anything can happen. No need to panic (I realize you, reader, are not panicking. This is merely a reminder for myself). Nonetheless, when I opened weather.com to see the unimaginable this morning, I was quite sad.

After a few hours of moping, I think I’ve come to terms with it. Mr. Peppermint immediately started trying to cheer me up. After all, weather is one of those factors that you can have no control of. Tents will be rented and everything will still be wonderful (we are getting married, remember?).

In addition, I’ve been trying to focus on the positive…

1. Good luck (I think that’s merely a consolation, but nonetheless, it symbolizes good luck!)
2. Higher chance of snow up on the top of the mountain (easily accessible by the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway)
3. Nice soft, even lighting for photos
4. Photo ops with cute umbrellas
5. Flowers & makeup stay fresher longer
6. Romantic!

As if these pros weren’t enough, I had to indulge myself (I mean “prepare” myself) for the possibility of rain.

Meet my new white galoshes:

(found on http://www.zappos.com/)

And requisite cute umbrella:

(from http://www.signaturebella.com/)

Are there any other rainy day brides out there? How did you cope??? Any tips?

It poured the morning of our wedding. Sadly, we got no outdoor shots before the ceremony. But the rain let up shortly after the ceremony -just in time for outdoor family pictures.

We had people holding umbrellas while everyone got situated for the photo. The photographer yelled Go! and everyone threw their umbrellas out of the shot. It was just slightly misty during the pictures so it all worked out!

I’m still sad when I see beautiful blue skies in other people’s wedding photos -but in the end, it doesn’t matter. Our pictures are great and I have hilarious memories of umbrella throwing outside the chapel.

The entire week before my June wedding the forecast was SUNNY! SUNNY! SUNNY! (Not even a cloud in the forecast). I was thrilled because I was getting married outside in a garden. The day of was a different story. I woke up to a dark gray sky and as we were heading to the ceremony, it started sprinkling… We lucked out and it let up and we were able to have the ceremony outside…but I learned a few things:
1) The weather forecasts are always wrong!
2) You can’t control the weather so just try not to think about it (I know, its hard!)
3) Pictures come out fabulous with gray skys! No glare/no squinting! And the umbrellas make adorable pictures!
4) You can’t control the weather…only how you deal with it…

Good luck! I hope it is sunny for your big day!!!!

My good friend got married on a rainy day and I cannot tell you how beautiful the pictures are. Seriously. Amazing. Everyone is all squinty in my pictures because it was so sunny on my wedding day! Bummer.

Slightly grey weather = BEAUTIFUL pictures. Everything will turn out wonderfully!

oh miss peppermint try not to worry too much- a million years ago i was a nanny, and one of the families had one of their wedding pictures on their mantle. the photo was black and white, taken at night, with the groom holding an umbrella in one hand and his other arm around his wife’s waist. the picture looked so passionate, the two of them alone in the rain, holding each other close (probably for warmth haha). and i still remember that photo years later - and it wouldnt be nearly as unique and beautiful without the rain!

I became addicted to checking three different weather websites: weather.com, accuweather.com and msn weather. Even that morning I even checked google. And I hate to tell you this, even though it told me it was sunny, it was drizzling!

I didn’t care about the morning of the ceremony, I was worried for our outdoor reception in the evening. But by the time We got the reception in the evening, it drizzled enough to make it wet but we had to just suck it up. By 730 in the evening, the clouds parted and the stars were abundant! As difficult it was to deal with, there one only one thing I could say, “oh well!”

By the end of the night, everyone came up to us and our parents and told us they had an amazing time and it was the most fun they ever had! It rained on my wedding and my dress was completely muddy by the end it all and it still was the best day of my life!

Miss. Peppermint,
What are those boots called on Zappos? I’m too lazy to try to find them on the whole site. :) My cousin is getting married in Alaska on an iceberg so I think those would be perfect for her to wear under her dress. Thanks!!!

It was raining the morning of my wedding, but thankfully by the afternoon the sun was shining beautifully (we were married outside on the riverfront lawn)!!!! However, we did some more photos the next morning at 8am and it was raining but it made some beautiful shots*IMO* so check them out:

Don’t you fret Peaches…it will all work out. Just look at that list of positives! You definitely are in the right frame of mind. I know it may seem dissappointing when you glance at the forecast, but rest assured knowing that no matter what, you will have a beautiful day, regardless of the weather.

Keep in mind this is coming from a bride who is praying it does rain on her wedding day. In fact, I just posted about it in my blog a few weeks back.

Miss Peppermint, try not to worry… the wedding is still over a week away and a lot can happen in that time frame. There was a 60% chance of rain at the time our ceremony was supposed to begin… The day before my two MOHs and I ran to a dollar store and got enough umbrellas for my husband and I to share a big one, and every member of the bridal party to have a smaller one, just in case. I thought that they umbrellas could make for fun pictures, if nothing else. We had them in baskets inside the church doors… and guess what? No rain! I heard that it rained a little during the reception, but I had no idea. Weather can be very unpredictable, and it looks like you’ve taken precautions in case it DOES rain on your day (your purchases are cute!!!)… but relax, and don’t let a little rain ruin it… if anything, it might make it more exciting and more fun for photographs!

Try the national weather service instead! They only do 7 days out:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=sgx&smap=1&textField1=33.83028&textField2=-116.54444

After all, isn’t it supposed to be fortuitous to rain on your wedding day?

I know this may not be enough consolation but those boots and that umbrella are seriously C-U-T-E

Weather systems are chaotic.. there’s still time for it to change!!

But if it makes you feel any better, I already know (my wedding is in May) that it will rain on my wedding day. Both of my graduations had POURING rain, and since bad things come in threes, I figure this is the third. :)

Just a little optimism for you–the forecast called for rain during our (outdoor) wedding all week. I kept wishing and hoping. That morning it was super windy and damp, with showers on and off. Nonetheless, I just knew it would be fine and we went ahead as planned. The rain stopped about 1/2 an hour before the ceremony. And…it was beautiful. No rain, the sun even peaked out (right as my brother-in-law and friend finished singing “Come Rain or Come Shine” during the seatings). The entire ceremony was perfect. Ten minutes after our kiss, as we were getting ready to take family pics and the guests were pretty much all in their cars, heading to the (indoor) reception, it poured. I mean, seriously, the skies broke open and it poured down all the rain it must have been holding in. I would never trade the memory of me and my new DH and our entire bridal party running like mad in the rain to the covered shelter. It was perfect.

So, no worries. Just go with your gut (and yes, we got some great “umbrella” pictures with my ten dollar black and white walmart golf umbrella).

Chin up, Miss Peppermint! Way back when, when I was stalking weather.com…everyday leading up to our wedding was sunny. Once the 10 day came in, 60% chance of rain. However, in a couple of days, the outlook changed and it was bright and sunny. I seriously think it is the tech geeks at the website who get a kick out of freaking out brides looking specifically towards a certain Saturday 10 days away!

Miss Peppermint, try not to worry. My weather widget is a notorious liar. My sister and I have been chatting many times and I’ve said to her, “Oh I see it’s raining where you are.” And she’s said “No, it’s a sunny day.” See? Lair.

I love the Princess Leia rain boots and I absolutely adore the umbrella! Too cute!

Thank you all for your support! I can’t tell you how great it has been to hear your success stories and know that I’m not in this alone!!

Stressgirl615 - here’s the link to the boots. They were a bit pricey, but when i saw the forecast, i was in need for some retail therapy :-)

Heather - those pictures are absolutely gorgeous! (and what nice lighting ;-) )

dddd89 - glad you caught that!

Aww it’s okay Miss Peppermint - there’s a very good chance of rain on my wedding day too, because it’s during the April rain season.

I think rain can make for some wonderful photos, and I LOVE the idea of large, colorful, PRETTY umbrellas - they would look gorgeous in your photos!

There’s also a chance that it won’t rain, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. For Mrs Poppy’s wedding they were forecasting severe thunderstorms for three days, with the middle day as her wedding day. I was worried for her, and it looked like it was going to pour any second during the entire day, but it didn’t rain a drop. The rain started the next day - how lucky! I hope maybe the same will be for you!

I agree with others on the squinting. My DH is notoriously “squinty” in photos, and our wedding day was super sunny - as a result we have about 10 photos where his eyes are open. Sigh.

All you can do is go with the flow, and vow to have a good time no matter what. Your guests will look to you to “lead” the attitude of the day - if you are splashing around in your wellies, everyone will have a great time.

Also, predicting the weather is such a waste of time IMO - they’re ALWAYS wrong. ALWAYS.

Hi Miss Pepperment!

I was in a wedding in early October and it was also scheduled to rain (60% too!) that day. It did rain a little but because of the overcast skies, it set her pictures up BEAUTIFULLY because of the white light it produced!! I’m sure your day will be wonderful.

And how cute are the umbrella and boots?!

All the best for your special day!

We got married last October and, yes, the forecast was for rain most of the week including Saturday. At mid week I was really getting bummed about it and it rained Friday night after the rehearsal dinner. But my maid of honor came to my rescue and gave me a darling pair of white wellies that I wound up wearing for the entire day. Hardly anyone realized that I was wearing them until we went out on the golf course for pictures and when I held up my dress to slosh through a puddle I gave away the secret. It was lots of fun, but even more when it turned out that my maid of honor and bridesmaids had all been wearing pink wellies that pretty well matched their gowns.

As it turned out we had a wonderful day and the pictures are awesome.
