Those Pesky Post-Wedding Pounds

November 29th, 2007 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. Emerald

*sigh* It was inevitable. They’re sneaking back with a vengence… I lost a total of 15 pounds before the wedding, 10 of which were lost during the last month when I was on the South Beach Diet. Oh, it wasn’t just for the sake of vanity (partly so, of course), but it was mostly due to necessity. I was the genius that bought a sample dress two sizes too small, but I loved it SO much I couldn’t let a little issue like FIT get in the way, heh heh heh.

But yes, let me be the millionth person to say that the South Beach Diet works wonders in the short term! Both Mr.E and I lost 10 pounds before the wedding, and it wasn’t absolute torture (ok, it was sometimes). But during the honeymoon, we just said, “To heck with it, let’s chow down!” and came back 5 pounds heavier. blush030 We had planned to go back on Phase One of South Beach after the honeymoon, but couldn’t bring ourselves to do it again… we just love food too much and lack the willpower to make a complete lifestyle change. I am notorious for my sweet tooth. I bet I can out-eat all of you when it comes to sugar/dark chocolate/desserts!

Miraculously, the 5 pounds melted off a few weeks after we returned from Hawaii. But since then, the scale has been creeping up up up little by little. These days, we pretty much eat whatever we’re in the mood for. And now, nearly 4 months after the wedding, I am an unfortunate 6 pounds heavier. Is anyone else going through this?! It’s as bad as the Freshman 15! Not to mention, it’s especially difficult this time of year. Let me just say that on Thanksgiving, we had a whopping THREE different meals to attend on the same day! And I just wish I still had the motivating factor of a too-small wedding dress to get me to the gym on a regular basis. Ahhh… such is married life! We call it “happy weight” laughin071

I had the same problem! During the honeymoon, I actually lost weight due to our tours on the island and hiking up and down to get to the beach and back. But now that we’re back home, the past 6 months, I’ve gained about 10 lbs! Of course, I’m eating whatever I want, but I’m also not motivated to go to the gym anymore. My hubby also gained weight, so we’re chubby together and we love it! My gym membership fees go down significantly starting January, so my hubby promised to join a gym at work, and we’ll motivate each other to become more active. Working out is always more fun when you have a partner. :)

I gained twenty pounds. Which on a 5′5” frame is disastrous. Mostly because of the pills though.

i believe it’s called the “newlywed nine.” you figure that after watching what you eat for the wedding, all bets are typically called off afterwards and happy people tend to eat more too. this happened to some of my friends too so you’re not alone. :-)

Oh, yeah. I feel your pain. I, too, got slightly panicky about the dress fitting for my September wedding after a disastrous first fitting, and started eating better, working out with a trainer, the whole nine yards. The dress fit like a charm (and was even a little bit big!) but about five minutes after the ceremony, I said, screw this, I am eating whatever I want for the foreseeable future! So, now I find mysel about 8-10 pounds heavier. Sigh. Oh, well. I won’t even pretend that I’ll start working out before Christmas. But January, here I come, gym! But I agree — it’ll probably be harder to stay motivated without a pretty white dress and hundreds of pairs of eyes looking at you, to think about. :)

Yes. Six months after the wedding, I have gained the newly wed nine, after having lost 5 lbs pre-wedding (doesn’t sound like much but I’m only 5′2″ so it does make a difference). And man I worked so hard to lose those 5 lbs! I actually was a little sad I only lost 5 lbs but I’m pretty sure that I added a lot of muscle since I started weight training for the first time in my life, and my clothes were fitting much better… multiple people told me I looked skinny, even after I came back from the honeymoon. So it’s quite frustrating that all that hard work was reversed! For me the weight gain has been about lots of stress with grad school and adjusting to married life… I’m trying to go to the gym more, hopefully I can get back to my normal weight soon, though I am definitely worried about all the holiday goodies!

I lost 15 pounds with the help of a personal trainer and dieting but now I’ve gained 10 pounds!! Ughh…

I don’t think you are alone AT ALL. Everyone I know who has gotten married has looked quite chubbier in the year post-marriage (and some just keep on gaining!). Because of this, my fiance is determined that we each have to lose 15 lbs by the wedding since we will gain more afterwards. I keep trying to tell him that the people who regain wait are the ones who were actively trying to lose it and fell back into their pre-wedding habits, and if we just keep being lazy like normal before the wedding, nothing will change afterwards. I don’t think I’m going to win this argument, though!

Thank you! I’m not alone! I’ve gained 5 pounds post-wedding, and it’s so frustrating. Of course, I’m not running obsessively like I was pre-wedding. And the holidays don’t help. We can all beat this! =)

This is so refreshing! I got married in October and I had lost 8 pounds to fit into my little white dress (i’m 5′2″). We took our honeymoon in January and when we returned (after the holidays and all that crap), I had gained 10 pounds! In 3 months! It’s so uncomfortable. I go to the gym 5 days a week, as always, but I think I have gotten lazy. Plus portion-control, lazy weekends, sitting at work, and all those influences. Anyway, I am SOOOOO glad to read that it’s not just me! I am going to hire a personal trainer and get back on track. Immediately!
