Veil Me!

November 29th, 2007 @ 11:12 am by Mrs. Peony

Miss Chickadee’s post about veils reminded me that I had totally forgotten about mine… or rather, the lack of.

I’m very fortunate that one of my mother’s friends used to own a small bridal accessories boutique where she hand-made most of the items, including veils. She retired from the profession a few years back, but when she heard of my engagement she graciously offered to make a veil for me.

With the end of the year fast approaching I need to decide on a design and tell her. The only thing is, I have no idea what I want.

My dress looks like this (except in pure white):

z10379602

z10379603

I had tried on several veils while dress-shopping, and I really didn’t have a preference. I liked the convenience and simplicity of fingertip lengths, but at the same time I really felt like a bride with a cathedral length.

I should mention that I’m only 5’ 1″ (5’ 5.5″ with my heels)… would a longer veil overwhelm me? Also, the skirt of my dress has a lot of detailing as you can see. I don’t want the veil to be a focal point and detract from the dress at all.

So what type of veil would you recommend for my dress? Fingertip or cathedral length? Any trims? Any stitching, embroidery, crystals, or other embellishments?

First off…the dress is BEAUTIFUL!
Secondly…if you feel like a bride in a cathedral length veil, than go with your gut. I’d suggest going for a simple trimmed veil. Lace would compete with the amazing details of the dress but you want your veil to feel finished. What about a thin rope trimmed cathedral veil?

Go for the fingertip length - it won’t make you look so short! But if you are actually getting married in a cathedral, then I say go for the cathedral length.

Agree with GreenTeaGuinness - I LOVE YOUR DRESS! I want to try it on and spin and dance in it like a princess :) haha!

I am not one to give veil advice - but whatever you do keep it simple. I’m afraid it will clash with the style of the dress. Plus you don’t want to hide any of its’ awesomeness!

Your dress is gorgeous Miss Peony. It’s so funny that us bees are going through the same thing all at once. I’ve been stressing about a veil this week too! I honestly don’t know which you should go with either. I remember watching “Glamour’s Wedding Do’s and Don’ts” and one of the tips was to pick a veil that goes with your dress. But it didn’t tell us how to do that!!!! Is there a veil expert out there that can help us??? Was your dress ever in a runway show? Maybe you can get a hint by looking at that? In the end, you should obviously go with whatever you want.

eeee! your dress is gorgeous! it looks so similar to the one that i wanted (and couldn’t afford! hehe). maybe a fingertip length. It wouldn’t overwhelm you, and it wouldn’t take away as much from the dress… with some light beading at the edge to match the bodice. :)

either way, long or shorter, if you go with a single layer, you should be able to see through it well enough that it wouldn’t hide the details.

Wow, your dress is just stunning. If it were me, I would go with a simple cathedral veil (one layer) so that you could still see the amazing detailing on the back of the dress through the veil. Or, I would do a very simple, much shorter veil - I wouldn’t do anything to distract the eye from that dress! So gorgeous!

Hi Miss Peony! I know we’ve never met in person so you might not be able to tell from pics, but I’m only 5 feet tall… and I had a long long veil on my wedding day and felt beautiful in it! The trick is finding one that works perfectly with your dress, and one that won’t overwhelm you. Mine was a sheer and not too poofy; it had two layers but the top layer was short. It was the kind that is gathered at the center of a large oval of tulle instead of two pieces gathered at one edge — makes the shape a little “slimmer,” I think. =) You’re going to look gorgeous gorgeous!

Is it possible to take your dress back to the shop and try on veils with it? I ended up getting my veil at the same place as my dress, mostly because the staff is good at matching the two and it was the most convenient. Granted, you’re not planning on buying one from them but they don’t necessarily have to know that :-)

Miss Peony, your dress is gorgeous! I can’t really help, but I’ve actually been thinking about veils as well recently. Anyone know when we’re supposed to order them? My wedding is in June and I want to try them on with my dress, but it doesn’t come in until April. Will that be enough time?

If you go with a cathedral, make sure it’s a sheer, sheer sheer one to show off that great detail on the back. Gorgeous dress!

i would agree that you’d need a very sheer, one layer veil if you go with a cathedral length veil…. i personally would pick something fingertip length because there’s already so much going on with the beautiful bustling and train!

ok that dress is seriously gorgeous! timeless… =) Don’t ever think that anything is overkill– it’s your wedding! I kinda wish I had been MORE crazy/blingy or something on my wedding day. Plus no one can really see the tiny details on your veil, unless you’re planning on having colored sequins or something. =) Why don’t you try different lengths of veils at your dress vendor?

btw, EVERYONE says I look like someone they know! I always get stopped in the street and have 30 second long conversations with random people until they slowly realize that I’m not “Christina” or “Lisa” or whoever! HAHA. Btw, your friend is so pretty & thin— I’ll take that as a compliment! =D

My dress looks just like yours!

And when I found it I discussed veils with the wedding shop owner. She said that because of the intricate detail of the dress, a detailed or very long veil would take away from the whole picture. She suggested a plain fingertip length and it did look really good with the dress. Plus, it’s cheaper! (if that matters to you!)

One layer cathedral length with no edge. It would show off your dress the best. A fingertip length, I feel, cuts a line right in the middle of your beautiful back… it might disrupt the flow of the design.
