About Mrs. Canary

Lovely Saja

November 30th, 2007 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Canary

It wasn’t until I lived in other cities did I realize that I took New York shopping for granted. Don’t get me wrong, shopping in other cities is definitely great, but (I’m biased here) nothing compares to the varied street vendors, small boutiques, and big department stores of New York. Though I have to admit, I still pine for a Nordstrom’s within city limits. But I digress… I found one of my favorite stores this past summer by just strolling through the small side streets of Soho.

Saja is a great little shop in Soho/Nolita that has the most beautiful dresses. I seriously want to buy every piece when I’m there. The staff there is also very attentive and helpful. The dresses change seasonally and they rarely carry back stock, but the great thing is that they do make bridesmaid dresses. Though I have to warn you that the colors are limited (depending on the season you may only get dark or light colors) and the production cycles are very tight (you have to order within a deadline to get certain styles and colors). But aside from that, the dresses are just to die for!

I bought one for Mr. C’s family reunion this summer, and most recently my MOH and I dropped by to check out dresses for bridesmaid options. Most of the dresses are made of silk chiffon, which I’ve decided is my favorite dress fabric of all time because when cut the the right way, it is so flattering. I love how the silk billows and flows. It’s the perfect lightweight fabric for a summer wedding, especially for July in New York, when it tends to get humid and very hot! Not only would they make great bridesmaid dresses, some of the longer styles would be well suited for mothers of the bride/groom or alternative wedding dresses.

Here are some of the styles MOH so graciously modeled for me:

And here are some of my favorites off their site (which are quite beautiful in person too!):
The prices, which range from $200-400, are pretty average for evening dresses, but high for bridesmaid options. Though we’re still figuring out our bridesmaid dress situation, I’m definitely bringing my mom in to scope out some dress options for her. I’ll keep you posted on what we find!

In the meantime, if you’re in New York, stop by and browse. Saja carries silk blouses, sweaters, wraps, and jewelry as well. If you’re not in New York, I believe Saja is carried in a few stores across the country, just call or email to ask– they’re always very responsive.

What are some of your favorite small designers or boutiques?

the dresses are lovely, but what struck me most was the model! why do dress stores, advertisers, and wedding magazines make the women modeling the dresses look so bizarre/unhappy/sickly?!

and although i know there are some beautiful, naturally thin women out there, the picture of the model in the pink dress makes me think she needs some assistance…

I love Deborah Lindquist’s sweaters and little tops, but she also does some really cool custom bridal gowns that are all 100% organic and environmentally friendly. And I live for boots and sandals from Twenty Two shoes- their designs are based out of Oakland but I know they retail in small boutiques and online and have the coolest handmade shoes.

My sentiments exactly! I was loving the dresses until I saw the third pic (the one with the back exposed). Ugh!

My bridesmaids dresses are actually Saja dresses! But not one made for bridesmaids. I got them from Anthropologie-ON SALE!

I was going to say the same thing about the disturbing pics of the model. I hope this post doesn’t get taken down because of our comments, but that girl looks unhealthy…that’s not a look that should be promoted in any way.

I’d love their dresses! If they made them to fit girls like me, too, it’d be even better!

Hey everyone!

Thanks for the comments. Hmm… I should have been more careful about the pics I chose. To be honest, when looking at clothes or fashion magazines, I tend to just gloss over the model and focus on the detail of the item. I don’t even notice their faces! So I’m sorry if I offended anyone– no intention at all.

As for Saja’s sizes, they are all standard from 0-14 (or 16). No way am I even remotely close to the size of the models and I found several Saja dresses that looked great on me.

I live in the middle of rural GA. What’s a boutique and where do I find these ‘designers’? ;)

Thanks so much for the ppost. Been wanting to hear some stuff about Saja, as I am embarking on a wedding. I love their dresses but wonder how they will fit. Hopefully I won’t have to travel all the way to NY to find out, since I live in Louisiana.

Very helpful post. Thanks again. I wish your MOH had tried on more dresses, so i could see the variety…..THANKS again.
