Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

November 30th, 2007 @ 3:52 pm by Mrs. Donut

The Boy and I are lucky enough to do a lot of traveling. In the past year we’ve been to Shanghai, Japan, Bali, and Beijing, and we’re always asked if we’re on our honeymoon. Well, we like to think that we’re living the honeymoon and we plan to keep it that way. So, we’ve decided not to go on an actual official honeymoon after our May celebration, opting instead to spend that time with family before moving to probably somewhere in Europe.

From time to time we do stumble on places we would like to go and we bookmark them on a special Travel Wish List. One of the places on that list is Turkey. The Boy spent time in Turkey as a child, and his great great grandfather spent a long time there as a missionary, so it would be a kind of family pilgrimage. Plus I am a huge history, well, nerd, so I would love to see Istanbul. But what we’re both really drawn to is Cappadocia.

Millions of years ago volcanoes created this amazing landscape, and since biblical times the people who settled there have carved their homes and communities from the volcanic rock.

There are quite a few little boutique hotels which inhabit these ancient homes. Our favorite is the Anatolian Houses.

Are you going to any unique place like this for your honeymoon?

Wow I envy your globe-trotting experiences! I was born in Korea but I haven’t been to any other Asian countries. My honeymoon to Greece is the vacation I’ve been dreaming of since high school and that’ll only be the 3rd country in Europe I’ve ever been to.

P.S. - that hotel rocks! I love it!

Cappadocia looks amazing! I’ve always wanted to go to Turkey too =)

We’re actually going to Greece this winter, Miss Peony, and assuming our plans go as expected, we’ll be off to Bhutan for our honeymoon next summer =)

Oooh that looks like fun! I’m going to Greece too and I’ve never been to Europe! At all!! So I’m really super excited about going in June. I was just doing my homework reading about Greece over my lunch break.

That hotel is beautiful!! We’re thinking about Cambodia and maybe a side trip to Mali. I lived in Mali for awhile and want to introduce my fiance to my family there.

Hi Miss Donut! The FI and I love traveling also! We’ve been to more than 20 countries. We’ve been to Turkey but we didn’t make it to Cappadoccia although we definitely plan to go there soon. We’re actually trying to do a Round-the-World trip for our honeymoon using OneWorld or StarAlliance. Fingers crossed!!

Cappadocia totally rocks! I was there 10 years ago. It was amazingly beautiful. Be sure to bring extra memory cards for your camera. Istanbul and Bodrum are also fabulous — if you can, take some time on Turkey’s coast to visit Greek ruins, and visit a hammam — turkish bath.

Wow! Cappadocia looks amazing!!! Hmmm. great idea! FI and I are both BIG on travel (although he is more well-traveled than I am). People are always asking us if we’re going on vacation on the weekend.

Liv - we went to Cambodia this summer and it was incredible! I would just suggest not going in the summer peak months as the heat is almost intolerable!

On our wish list: Machu Picchu, entire Mediterranean (me), Andes Mountains (him), Maltese, Bail (me), and New Zealand. We’ll have to see what happens.

Oh! And have you checked out “1,000 Places To See Before You Die”? It’s a book and they picked 1 newlywed couple to go on trips for 4 months based on the places in the book. Oh we were soooo envious of that couple!

We went to Vietnam and Cambodia for our honeymoon and it was our best travel experience yet. Both are a bit rugged, but if you’re up for something a little different and you’re flexible (or if you just love to travel like we do!), you’ll love both countries! I fell in love with Cambodia and the people. It’s a heartbreaking and beautiful place!

We’re in the same boat…fiance and I both have jobs that require us to live abroad most of the time, plus we do a lot of traveling on our own for vacation…. We’re getting married in May and mainly due to the prep we are doing for our next country we will be living in we can’t really squeez in a honeymoon but honestly after years of travel, staying at home is more of a honeymoon for us.

I do highly recommend you get around to doing Turkey at some point. It’s great.

It’s hard to find someplace “new and different” to go to when we live abroad and travel constantly. We knew we didn’t want the typical European vacation because we’ve seen so much of Europe already. However, we have a limited time for the honeymoon as I submit my PhD just 2 months after our wedding. So we had to find a spot midway between California (where the wedding is) and England (where we live). We aren’t beach people, but we’re outdoorsy, so we’ve decided on a remote peninsula in the western part of Iceland- fancy hotel, hiking, snowmobiling, sea trips, playing on glaciers! I’m so excited!!
PS- Cappadocia is awesome.
