Inspiration: Sky Lanterns

December 3rd, 2007 @ 1:39 pm by Mrs. Donut

Instead of bird seed or flower petals or sparklers, how amazing would this be for an evening send off of the bride and groom…?

Sky lanterns are an Asian tradition. They are made from rice or mulberry paper and bamboo, and work like hot air balloons that rise and float back down to the ground. Some believe that, as they rise, they take away your troubles and bring good luck. Others think of them as a symbol of family security. Guests can write their wishes for the couple and the lanterns will “carry them to Heaven”.

All of these are really fantastic ways the sky lantern can tie into a wedding, I mean, other than just being amazing and pretty. I think that this would be absolutely beautiful at a beach or lake wedding floating out over the water. (Just one thing - check your city’s fireworks code before launching these.)

Please don’t do this over the ocean or any water body. As lovely as it is, it is definately pollution since nobody will be cleaning it up.

I love the idea of sky lanterns but had to 86 it for my summer wedding. It turns out that open flame + dry trees and grass is an unlucky wedding combo. I’d hate to start a forest fire and I couldn’t be totally sure of where the lanterns would fall.

yeah these showed up on a few wedding blogs a few months ago but they are rather expensive plus they just really aren’t safe for the environment. I’d hate it if something like the fires in California/Florida were started from my wedding decorations.

they do make pretty pictures though.

Actually, these are much safer for the environment than, say, fireworks. If you do your research, you’ll see that they are actually FULLY biodegradeable and much less hazardous to wildlife than fireworks. the only thing is the obvious fire hazard, so you’ll want to make sure that you are in a very open area with little to no wind. We actually used these at our wedding as a way to honor deceased loved ones, and while it didn’t turn out exactly as planned (a little too windy), it was beautiful none-the-less. The key thing is to use common sense.

I would absolutely be aware of the weather conditions before deciding to use these and I would make sure to follow all the safety instructions, since you are dealing with fire. They burn for just 5 minutes, depending on where you get them from, and then fall completely extinguished. As Ashley said, they are 100% biodegradable (made from mulberry or rice paper and bamboo) and much safer (and quieter) than fireworks.

I should have said all of these things in my post. Thank you, ladies, for pointing out that I should be more informative about the practical and not just focused on the pretty. I would never intentionally do anything to harm the environment or promote harming the environment.
