Make-over Or Do-over?

December 3rd, 2007 @ 11:27 am by Mrs. Petunia

I won’t lie: I’m a bit torn about my hair & make-up trial. I thought things would go smoothly for sure since the person doing it was the same person who had done my hair & make-up for my b-pics and I had been extremely happy with those results. But you tell me — here’s my before picture (goodness I could use some make-up!):

And here’s the after with make-up (no hair yet):

Pretty, I think, (at least much improved!) but my eyelids are much more yellow/gold than I’d like, and it took my asking for a different lip color a few times before getting this one, and even this one is a bolder pink than what I’d wanted.

Now the back of my hair I really liked (though my hair comb is a bit askew):

But the front…that’s another story. I had asked for it to be swept back on the sides but with a small “poof” on the front. On the first attempt I got a HUGE poof (I have no picture of it because I asked for it to be redone pronto!). The second attempt required that the entire back be redone — and still, the top front was huge. Finally, to save on time (the appointment had already started TWO hours late — she’d squeezed in a desperate bride that morning whose hair/make-up person had cancelled on her — all of which I’d waited for because I never got a call saying she was running late) I asked for the front to be flattened without having to re-do everything and this is what I got:

And I don’t love it, though I’ve been promised that we can make it work on the day of the wedding. We could have continued to play around with it if 5 or 6 hours hadn’t already passed since the time I’d gotten there, but it had just been too long at that point.

When I got home, I tried to play around with the front to get the effect I wanted, but of course, I can’t do squat with my hair, and I’d already pulled some pins out of my hair a few times, so it’s wispy and messy and all I got was this:

What do you think? I probably need another trial, ha, and here I was trying to save some money… The thing is I’ve seen the work she does and know she can do much better than this, but should I take that chance?

If you’re not completely happy with it, don’t settle. Maybe bring in more examples of what you like in the form of magazine photos to help her get a better idea?

Actually, I like the look of your bio photo better.

If you have reservations I’d get another trial.
I agree, your make-up isn’t good enough — you are a beautiful girl and the make-up should just enhance your natural beauty. I love the back of your hair, but think the front could be much softer. Now, it is hard to have hair look soft and hold all night, but it is possible! My softer curled updo stayed from 10 AM until 10 PM without any fuss.

I had a terrible first trial! It took me three hair trials and 4 make-up trials to get it “just right.” Trust me, this is the ONE thing that was very difficult for me and had I not kept looking until I was thrilled, I would have been really dissapointed. (see the saga here: http://tinyurl.com/2z5sct).

You put so much efforts into your wedding look — the dress, the hair pins, the flowers….why settle for hair and make-up. GL and keep us posted.

I think if you tone down the lips with something a little more nude it would be very nice. I think the eyes are perfect. I think you also need more volume with the hair. You’re face is narrow and angular and you need the hair to soften it up.

I also agree you really need the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly how it’s going to look before the big day. You want to feel gorgeous and not wondering if the lipstick is going to be too bright in the pictures!

I love your hair comb! Can I ask where you got it? thanks!

I think you should have another trial. You are gorgeous but I don’t think the makeup really enhances it. I think there should be balance between your lips and your eyes for wedding day makeup - and in hte picture - your lips are overpowering. I also think she could do a little more with your eyes - maybe a little contouring or something. Take in more pictures and have her try again. Take in more pictures of the hair you are looking for - and show her what you liked about the first trial and what you didn’t like. You want to feel confident and not worry about it on your wedding day!

Hi Miss Petunia!

I do like the eyes a lot, but agree with one of the comments that perhaps there should be a little contouring. Even without the contouring though, I really do like what she did with your eyes. The lips on the other hand were quite overpowering when I first glanced at the picture. The hair is nice, but it shouldn’t just be “nice.” This is your wedding for crying out loud! I say, find an artist that you are truly happy with. Your children, grandchildren, everyone will see this years and years from now, and you want to look back on it feeling completely happy with how you looked and felt on your special day!

i think overall the look makes you look older then you normally appear and I really don’t think it brings out your beauty. Personally I’d keep looking…sure the trial isn’t exactly how you will look on the day of but it should at least be close enough.

beanchar says:

Do over.

You are a pretty girl and IMO this makeup and hair combo is too severe and makes you look older than you are. Find someone who can give you a softer look.

Please excuse my honesty….I don’t particulary like the makeup job, but that could be because of the drastic difference between makeup and no makeup…out of curiousity were you going for a dramatic look or a natural look? I do like the back of the hair…the front needs a bit more work. But I love the clip! =) I would suggest a second trial if you have the time.

Sara says:

I really like the way you redid your hair. The style on the front goes well with your face. However, I think you should try another makeup person. I think they were going for a very natural look, but it looks more like they were afraid to put much makeup on you.

Atomickittyn says:

If you’re not happy with your consultation (ie. that it was 2 hours late) then I think it would be fair to ask for a second consultation, especially since you had to accomodate her (the stylist) which isn’t fair to you.

I also hated my first hair trial. Since I lived out of town from the wedding location I had to schedule my second trial on the Tues before the wedding and I was pretty nervous about cutting it so close.. but I brought in more pictures and tried to be really specific, and the second trial was much better, which made me feel so much better about the wedding day. You don’t want to be stressed about if you will hate your hair, so I agree that you should try another trial. Bring more pictures along with these ones so you can point out what you want vs. what you didn’t like last time. The back does look great :)

BTW I agree with another poster that I really like your hair in your profile pic - if you have more time at your next trial maybe you can try a side-swept look like that, if you still can’t get the ‘poof’ right? That’s basically what I ended up changing with my own hair and I loved the result.. it might be worth checking out.

do not settle! i made the mistake of trusting “oh it’ll look better on your wedding day,”… and it looked far worse! my makeup and hair would have been ruined if it weren’t for my moh saving the day.

def def get another trial. if you don’t feel beautiful on your wedding day, it may ruin your entire day.

I would definitely do a 2nd hair/makeup trial. I had a similar experience where the hair and makeup at my first trial turned out just OKAY. I was really trying to watch my budget and didn’t want to pay for another trial. I also thought that maybe I could give her some small suggestions on the day of the wedding and it’ll turn out better. But eventually I decided I didn’t want to chance it since I was paying so much for a makeup/hair artist, I might as well get something I loved. We ended up doing a completely different look and I LOVED it, which would never had happened if I had settled on making it work the day of.

Looooove your eye makeup. Like you said, the lipstick is a littttttttle on the bright side. But then again, in photos, I think you want your lips to look a little darker? I don’t know.

shana says:

If you do settle, you will still look gorgeous. I think you look even more beautiful after 6 hours in your last photo than right after the makeup application.

18.
Jennifer says:

Definitely don’t settle…try to get another trial if you can. Like everyone’s been saying, you might not want to risk her screwing up your hair and makeup on your wedding day. Plus, if she was 2 hours late and didn’t let you know that she was going to be late beforehand, that’s not fair to you, and the least you should get is a redo of the trial.

19.
HC says:

I was not happy with my first makeup trial and the woman discounted the second attempt by 50%. Particularly where you had to wait so long, request another trial and a significant discount.

Mo says:

Don’t settle! Your eyes look great, but I agree that the color is a little to yellow. I like the idea of contouring, maybe with a more brownish-gold so that it looks a little more natural. Also, you might want to think about a little more blush. The bright lights/flash tend to wash people out a little, so using a little more than normal will show up totally natural in pictures.

danibel says:

to be honest….the pink lips are a little too pink. ok, a lot too pink. since ur so fair skin, a more neutral pink lip color might be best. but i really like the back of ur up do with the comb. its gorgeous! i think the front could use some work. maybe a few fallen pieces to frame ur face? whatever u decide, as long as ur happy with it! it only matters that u feel comfortable on ur big day and that u love the way you look. hope this helps!

Jay says:

I agree–get another trial. Your hair is much too severe and makes you look older (both in terms of your age and what period in time you belong to). I have an oval/long-ish face too and I know how hard it can be for stylists to get the soft-ish look in the front without making my face look realllllly long.

If your stylist can’t get it right the next time on the first try, book someone else who can. I went through four hours in the chair with my first stylist and she just couldn’t get my hair to do anything. I freaked out, found a new stylist, and she did my hair perfectly on the first try in 20 minutes. It can be done!

p.s. The Makeup—yeah, your eyelids should not look like that! I think you look nicer in your bio picture too.

Thanks for the feedback readers — I agree with all of it! =)

I think I’m going to schedule another trial with someone my DoC recommended, even if it does mean I have to put out some serious money again…

By the way Colleen, the comb is from Regina B! If you search on our site, you’ll see both Mrs. Bell Pepper and I have blogged about our great experiences with them!

crackhead says:

Hrm, I think it looks harsh and unnecessarily ages you. I think you look so cute and fresh in your bio picture. I kind of like the eyeliner but definitely less gold. Maybe go for more of a pink color? And I don’t like the bright lip gloss. I like it better in the last picture when it faded a bit. The back of your hair is very pretty and glamorous but yeah the front again looks like an old lady. You can do better.

Lexie says:

Miss Petunia,

I agree that wedding day make-up should enhance your natural beauty and this makes you look a little to “done-up” as apposed to bright and polished and blushing. I am from your area and I fear that I know who your vendor was for this trial because I’ve been considering putting down my deposit with her! I’m pretty nervous about this because it’s quite pricey, as your mentioned, and jumping from trial to trial is really something I’d like to avoid but I’m finding that it may be necessary. It would be SO helpful if you could continue sharing your hair/makeup experiences with us and please make recommendations if you can. Good luck!
