About Mrs. Hummingbird

I love cake. There is nothing better than a great little bit of it. Moist pastry, creamy icing, just sweet enough to satisfy but not rot your teeth - it’s the perfect dessert!

As I’ve mentioned previously, with Mr. Hummingbird being a bit of a Star Wars geek and me wanting to show off some personality in our wedding, we decided to have our cake as an Ewok Village cake, complete with a Han Solo and Leia topper.

Originally, when we first started planning, I saw a great picture of a tree trunk cake and thought that, with our outdoor location, this would be the perfect choice for us, especially were we to get two little birdy toppers. However, the more time went on, the more I really wanted Mr. Hummingbird to have something he could be excited about too, so I thought it would be cool to kind of change up the tree trunk cake idea into an Endor Village, complete with Han, Leia and a gaggle of Ewoks* (Do you call a gathering of Ewoks a gaggle? I’m not sure what the term is for a group of them).

However, again this idea was changed slightly when we had our engagement party and realized that our massive cakes ended up going to waste. So instead, we’ve decided to go the cupcake tree route. Because the servings won’t be as massive (the pieces of cake for our engagement were seriously too big), we’re hoping that we’ll have less left over and, if we do our cake as cupcakes, we might be able to do more than one flavour to satisfy our guests.

Anyway, as a wedding present, my Man of Honour Greg has agreed to make our cake(s) for us and we’re preparing to do a “demo cake” when I go home for Christmas, but I realized the other day when we were having a discussion about it that I’m not quite sure how I want to set things up in terms of our cupcake tree.

So, it is with much excitement that I present my possible cupcake tree diagrams! I do not have an arts background and therefore did them with MS Paint, so please don’t make too much fun of how crappily I draw.**

Option 1: The Single Stander - The option displays three tiers of cupcakes and features a small cake on top for cutting purposes.

Option 2: The Double Dose - This option would not only increase cupcake space, but would include a little rope bridge between the two towers. (Though I have not pictured them, Leia and Han would either be on the table in between the two columns or on the bridge depending on how big it was)

Option 3: The Double Dose Deluxe - You get the two towers, the bridge and the cutting cake from the Single Stander.

Option 4: The Split Level Stander - This encorporates the cutting cake back onto the tiered towers and but its asymmetry looks a little less conventional than some of the other cake pictures.

So ladies, what option would you go for?

1) The Single Stander
2) The Double Dose
3) The Double Dose Deluxe
4) The Split Level Stander

I am going to make the cake stands myself so I’m crossing my fingers (such as they are) that they’ll turn out okay!

* The Ewoks are not accounted for in the illustrations as we are currently on the hunt for Ewok figurines.
** I am not expecting complete mercy as I do realize how ghetto these looks.

I like the bridge, and while I am generally a symmetrical sort of gal, the asymmetry of #4 reminds me the most of an Ewok village.

And I think that your illustrations are fab- I am a big fan of using Paint.

I like # 3 - a little bit of everything!

How about you have a tall stand for just your mini cake with the Han and Leia toppers, and have two shorter cupcake stands for the cupcakes, with rope bridges extending off to each of them? That way it’s symmetrical and still incorporates the rope bridge (which I think is an adorable idea).

either 1 or 3. This is an awesome idea!

I like the third one. You get the cake for the cutting purposes and you get the bridge.

Double Dose Deluxe all the way– you gotta have a bridge and it will be easier to cut the little cake if it’s not balancing on top of little cakes and Ewoks.

I will ask my Star Wars geek husband what a grouping of Ewoks is called because, sadly, he will probably know.

On the upside, he may have some ideas about where to purchase tiny cake-decorating-suitable Ewoks…

that is if I can tear him away from playing with the vintage light saber he just finished repairing. No kidding, he owns THREE of them and if your FI wants to wear a Darth mask to cut the cake, let’s just say I know someone who has one in his office… ;)

Split Level Stander. Totally. It is more village-like, and the idea of Leah and Han standing lower than everyone else? No way! Put them up high!

Option 4! I agree that it looks most like a village and I really like the asymmetry.

#3. it looks more uniform (although you can maybe make it even more uniform by adding bridges to the main cake too so that it doesn’t look like it’s floating too much… that’s how i pictured it when you described it)

single stander or double dose delux - i guess it depends on how many people you are serving?
