Vintage or Modern?

December 4th, 2007 @ 10:30 am by Mrs. Flamingo

I’m sorry I haven’t been around much. The last couple of weeks have been hectic, which explains my lack of posting.  It shows that the holidays are just around the corner. Regardless of all the shopping and snow, the planning must go on and my indecisiveness regarding my hair continues.

I’m still not sure whether or not I will go to a hairdresser for my bridal hair. My maid of honor offered to do my hair - free of charge of course. Now we all want to cut expenses, but I don’t know if cutting in the area of my hair is the way to go. I know what she will do will be beautiful, but it won’t be like the magazine clippings I have been accumulating for the past year. Hair is just hair… but it is my big day and I want everything to be so perfect.

Since I have a strapless dress, and a choker style necklace, I think it would be best if I chose an up do…. but my big dilemma is whether I should go vintage or modern?

You probably know by now that I’m having a vintage inspired (30s) weddings, but I don’t know if I should go all out and include my hairstyle too. What do you think? I love the look of the 30s and my hair is long enough to do practically all the styles imaginable… but I have to take into consideration that I have a elbow length veil and no blusher (which happens to be the typical vintage inspired veil).

I also really like the idea of a having a low updo like in the top 2 pictures above - a low bun or something along those lines. I even purchased a rhinestone comb for the extra sparkle.

I need your opinions on this one. First off - should I hire a professional to do my hair? Secondly, do I go vintage or modern? I know I have to try the look to know, but at the same time, I don’t feel like paying for trials if in the end my MOH will be doing my hair… HELP.

i like a low updo for you…from your profile pic, I think your face is fairly small and I think a loose hairstyle may overwhelm your face. I also think a low updo will show off your choker very nicely….but that’s just me!

PS, I really like the last picture in the lower right hand corner without the big poof in the front…

I like the low updo for you as well. And I would give your friend a trial run to see what she can do. I would let her know upfront that you’re just trying out her hairstyling skills. If you aren’t happy, then hire a hairdresser. There’s no point in you both stressing out on the big day.

How much experience does your MOH have? Why don’t you pick your top 3 or 4 choices (modern and vintage) and have her try them on you.

A - It’ll give you a chance to see what they look like. Maybe you’ll fall in love with one on you.
B - You’ll be able to see whether she can do what you want - or whether you’ll need to hire a professional.
C - It’ll be some fun female bonding time :)

My vote is to go vintage. I love the unique!

Having gone through the wedding day earlier this year - it take a lot of time to do everyone’s hair. And take into consideration that if she’s doing your hair, who is doing everyone else’s hair? And if everyone is doing their own hair you may get into that point that I at least tend to get to when I’m doing my own hair that I’ve failed completely and I simply have to wash it and start all over again - huge time drainer. I’d hire someone for the time factor alone. Also, if you end up hating your hair on the day of you will only have to be bitter towards someone you don’t really know instead of towards your best friend/sister/etc. Plus they won’t feel as bad if they can tell you don’t like it - they’ll just comiserate that the professional was horrible. . . of course if you choose the right hair dresser none of that happens :)

I say go all out with the vintage style. But try it out first.

Wold your MOH mind practicing with you to give you a feel of what to expect? If not, I say go with someone else. Stress levels will be elevated on your wedding day since everyone wil l be so excited, and you don’t want a mess up on the hair.

I would say hire someone-yes its a little more $ but if you do a trial with your friend and you dont like it, she might be insulted that you decide to go with someone else. And if you do go with her and then aren’t happy the day of, like the other comment said-you dont want to be bitter towards her.
But i love the vintage styles! They’re beautiful and something a little different.

I like low updo and I’m all about the vintage too, so perhaps you could add a vintage feel to the updo with a few waves similar to the ones in the upper photo-top left, but closer to the head.

i went vintage with a low hairstyle and the swarovski pins added a modern twist. it was actually inspired by the place i got the pins - a few teenage girls were running a mall kiosk that sold hairpins and one of them had a similar style. hope this link works:

As they mentioned above, have your MOH practice on your hair beforehand to see what she can do!
And what if you combine hairstyles? Something like the photo in the bottom left of the first set in the front and a low bun in the back. I love the vintage look, though, especially since it’s the theme for your wedding.

Thanks everyone for the input. By the way… my MOH is my cousin. She is good but like you all mentionned its stressful. I did the hair for my friend and all her bridesmaids at her wedding… and let me tell you, I don’t know if I would do it again. (and I was a bridesmaid too)

My MOH was gonna do only my hair, so for my bridesmaids I still didnt know what to do. My present hairdresser is a sweetheart and I am sure she could do exactly whats in the pictures above. I will ask her how much a trial is. The only thing is that I would have to go the the salon the day of.

I love the idea of the vintage hair… and yes it would go with the whole theme… i just dont want to look back at my pictures and say ” what was i thinking” lol

Keep the suggestions coming… I appreciate it :)

I vote for the last picture in the lower right corner as well, and agree that having your MOH do a trial run is probably the answer. Hopefully the two of you are close enough that you can do a trial, and if it isn’t what you are looking for you can tell her you are going to go to a professional (without hurting her feelings).

Ooh, go vintage. Not all the way, I think the finger-waves might be a bit much if you’re worried about looking back in horror 20 years from now, but some sleek waves incorporated into your hairstyle could definitely evoke movie-star glamour without going over the top.

I personally love the low updo– so many brides feel that they have to have their hair UP up, and it doesn’t always suit the face. I like hair softly waved back from the face, to a low chignon in the back. Classic, elegant, and you can have one or two gorgeous hairpins to add some bling. (not so coincidentally, I did a low updo)

btw if you liked something similar to mine it would actually be super easy to do it yourself, although i had a hairdresser do it. you just tie a low ponytail, then loosen it and pile all of the long hair into the “well” and secure with a clip/pins, and use pins to roll in the side hair.

1. go pro honey. that way you can both (you and moh) relax.

2. Idk what’s modern or not, but my favorite style is the bottom right b+w pic in the second set of pictures. i think it’s timeless.

A chignon isn’t necessarily “modern” if you search pictures of eva peron - you’ll see that she is really credited with making that hairstyle popular…. you could also use the combs that you’ve already got…. but if you are going for a “hollywood vintage glam feel” i think it would be so cool to do the waves in the top pictures.

I’d say have a day with your MOH to work out what kind of style you want - even if just to decide vintage or modern. You’ll have more time to umm and ahh, and wont feel pressured to make a decision.

Once you’ve got a general idea what you want, then I’d say go ahead with a trial with a professional. Unless your MOH manages to do exactly what you want, although I agree with the others that a pro might be less stressful.

Plus, if she’s your MOH, and cousin, she might feel extra nervous about the responsibility of your big day - even if she does fine on the trial, shaky hands might appear on the day!

p.s. in terms of vintage vs modern, I’d say try both (and different styles) but then choose the one that suits YOU best.

A vintage style that doesn’t suit you might look costumey combined with everything else. A modern style that doesn’t suit you might like out of place. I wouldn’t worry about ticking the right boxes too much.

I think you should go pro, but definitely try out a couple of styles with your MOH first!

As for vintage v. modern, I think vintage-inspired but not too costumey is the way to go! I love the bottom left picture in the vintage group and the bottom right picture in the modern group. They seem to be a compromise between a vintage sensibility and over-the-top drama!

I would personally go pro if you opt for an updo (I might feel comfortable using a friend if I was wearing my hair down, but not for an updo) and I would go for the vintage style in the bottom left corner from your vintage collage. Love it!

The bottom left one on the first set of images looks like a good mix to me… or the bottom right in the second set… and i would spend the money for the hair, because you will be less stressed knowing that it’ll go smoothly
