We drove through a rain forest & explored Shaw Park - filled with lots of exotic flowers and spice trees.

We stopped in a town called Hell. Sorry, we didn’t have time to send a postcard.

These rock formations look like they could be from hell right?

We also climbed Dunn’s Water Fall! We brought our digital camera with us not realizing that we’d have nowhere to put it. I did bring along a ziplock bag just in case we needed to carry it with us in the water. Well, we did that and unfortunately the ziplock bag tore open during our climb and the camera got wet. I was devastated! We have no pictures on this day. (When we got back on board the ship, we bought another camera. It cost us a bit of money, but it was worth it.)

A view from the base of the falls facing the ocean..

We started at this point. It was much more treacherous than we anticipated. We were forced to hold hands on both sides of us, so I held on to Mr. Violet and some random stranger. I was highly uncomfortable at first holding a stranger’s hand, but I held on to the stranger for dear life because some parts of the climb were scary. Even though I wore rubber shoes made specifically for these water sports, there were a few times I thought I was going to fall. It was also pretty high up. This picture does not really show how high it gets but it was quite a hike! It was amazing though.

Grand Cayman Islands

Mr. Violet said that this was his favorite island out of the 4 that we visited.

We hung out with sea turtles. There were little ones and big ones. We were only able to pick up the smaller ones because even the smaller turtles were quite heavy!

…And we swam with the stingrays! Okay, we didn’t really swim (in fact I can’t swim) but we did take a 45 minute boat ride into the middle of the ocean to the Sand Bar and stood in about 4 feet of water. Stingrays surround the area when people are there because they smell the food (not us, but of the squid!) It’s crazy to think that the ocean can have such shallow water in the middle of nowhere. It was quite amazing having stingrays just swim around us. People were screaming because the stingrays were so big, but they were very friendly. I was not afraid of them, but moreso of the waves. I can’t swim and even though I’ve been in the ocean a few times by now, I still get frightened. This experience was really cool and we’re so glad we did it!

We decided to skip the beach and snorkeling excursions even though we heard that snorkeling is phenomenal here. We figured that nothing would beat our Great Barrier Reef experience in Australia. Instead, we spent a whole day in Tulum to see the Mayan Ruins. It was everything we had hoped for and more. We met a Native Mayan who gave us an in depth history of the Mayans (smart Indians) and then walked around on our own just taking in everything we saw.

Plenty of iguanas roaming about

It’s really a humbling experience. It’s unbelievable what the Mayans were able to create with their bare hands so long ago. Among the many wonderful things that the Mayans created were salt & honey (sugar used to make chocolate).

We’re really glad we decided to have a honeymoon cruise. It was fun and relaxing and we saw 4 islands in one week without needing to travel with our luggage. We really loved our experience on the Freedom of the Seas. The staff were super friendly and really tried to accommodate all our needs. I think we see a 4th voyage in the near future!

Reading this and looking at your pictures brings back very fond memories of a very similar (perhaps exact itinerary) Royal Caribbean cruise I took with my family when I was a teenager. Looks like you had a great time!

Looks like fun! We did a similar cruise on Carnival a couple of years ago. I thought Hell is in Grand Cayman not Jamaica (I’ve never been to Jamaica, but I’ve been to Hell)?
Grand Cayman was my favorite port too! We did the stingray, turtle and Hell tour too!

Cruises are great for future-vacation scouting — it was a similar cruise that inspired me to go BACK to Grand Cayman, where I ended up having my dream wedding!

Miss Toucan - I think you’re right.. haha. we did so many things in one week.

AMK - Yeh I agree, it’s a great opportunity see an island at a glance without having to invest too much time in it. You can always go back. I’d definitely return to Mexico for a few days. Ochos Rios was a good one day adventure.

I love how the turtle you picked up looked like it was all, “Dude, put me down. This sucks.” But then Mr. Violet’s turtle was all, “AUGH! It’s kissing me! IT’S KISSING ME! Aaaauuugh!”

You guys look like you had such an awesome time! A real great advertisement to cruises to a girl like me that thought she’d never want to take one. Now I do!

I was drooling over your caribbean pics when I noticed that you sailed on Freedom of the Seas. That’s the same ship we’ll be sailing on in less than 6 weeks for our honeymoon. :) We’ll be doing the Eastern itinerary instead (San Juan, St Thomas, St Martin), but your pictures have certainly whet my appetite! Thanks for posting!

Ahh! This brought back some not-so-distant memories!! We went to Ocho Rios, Jamaica on our honeymoon (just this past September) and stayed at Sandals Dunn’s River. We climbed the Falls too! Weren’t they amazing and so so fun? I’m sorry you didn’t get any pictures!! We brought along a water camera and the guides so graciously took pictures for us. It looks like you had a wonderful time. Oh, and I love your creations on Etsy too. (I’m thinking of branching out and turning my paper/sewing hobbies into a part-time business), so I’m a Craftster and Etsy fiend. :-) Anywho, I’ve gotten totally off topic, but your pics are beautiful and it looks like you made wonderful memories!

lol @ faithsista…i thought the same thing!

your pictures and posts make me want to go on a cruise soooo badly but i can’t convince the bf to venture out over the water like that, no matter how big the boat is. i guess we’ll just have to settle for island hopping. lol.

i’ve been to hell, michigan but the hell in grand cayman looks a whole lot better!

one little tip on dunn’s river–you can climb it without a guide or group, going at your own pace. our bus driver suggested that my husband and i, along with the other couple on the bus, go it alone, and we were SO glad we did it that way–we got to avoid the long line of strangers, and we could go off the beaten path a bit. even better, we made friends with the other couple, so we just traded cameras & took pictures for each other, then swapped at the end. it worked perfectly!

Gaby - I wish I knew that beforehand! At the time that we went, it was quite crowded =(

Faithsista - that was exactly how it went down! poor turtles! haha.

Mrs. Bee - We actually have never gotten seasick on cruises, but we have gotten sick on small boat rides. I actually got sick on the boatride coming back from Stingray City. =( You barely feel it on the big cruiseship.

Love love love your pictures.. Reminds me of my trip in August. And, I love your turtle pictures! Turtles were so cute. Wish I saw some.

But I did go to Stingray city. It was definitely cool. I freaked out b/c I was floating and watching the stingrays below me. Few seconds later, I felt a stingray hover over my legs and another stingray hover below my legs so it was like they were sandwiching me. Freaked out! haha.

:)
