The Things You Do For Each Other

December 5th, 2007 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Toucan

Ever since moving into the city, Mr. Toucan’s been bugging me to take a Women’s self-defense class. I finally agreed because he guilt tripped me into it by say some of the following:

“I worry about you when you walk home from school at night. It would make me feel better.”
“What would I do if something happened to you?”
“Please, do it for me?”
“You will never have to buy me another gift ever again if you do this.”

Kinda sweet, huh? Since he was so adamant about me going to class, AND sent me a link to sign up for a Rape Aggression and Defense class offered by my school, I signed up.

I pretty much complain all the time about having to go to class because it’s at an awkward time (for me anyway), and it’s my 3rd class in so many days during the week. However, the class itself is rather fun. Once you get over the yelling, “No!” all the time out loud in front of the class, it’s quite enjoyable. Because women are generally smaller and weaker than men, the objective of the class is to learn how to maximize women’s strength when fighting off an attacker.

Recently, we learned how run away from an attacker while blocking and fighting back. Next week, we’ll learn about ground assault, and how to roll a 300 lb attacker off of you! And the final week, we’ll be doing simulations. Our attackers will look like this:

We’ll be put into positions like this:
And this:
And, we’ll have to punch, kick and claw our way out. It looks kinda fun? I’ll have to see if they’ll let me bring my camera. Maybe I can show you all little of my RAD experience.

I’m letting people jump me and beat me up to make Mr. Toucan happy. The things you do for each other…

Have you done anything you didn’t want to do to make your significant other happy?

*all images taken from the RAD website. Courses are $25, though some towns/cities and schools offer classes free of charge or at discount. RAD is a national program - to find one in your area look here.

I also took RAD in college and it was one of my most favorite classes! They video taped ours for us and I still have it somewhere at home. Perhaps I will go dig it up!

The final class was so nervewracking, but it’s amazing what your body & mind do without your consent when a 300 lb guy in full black gear is coming at you!

GOOD LUCK!

I took this class for free at college - it’s awesome. Our instructor once had his nose broken by a girl in a previous class - he said he’d never been prouder.

Interesting placement on the logo… are you supposed to kick him in the RADs??? ;)

hahaha, beanchar! X marks the spot, maybe.
Actually, we had our simulations (i guess our test), and I was disappointed to see that they didn’t wear those suits. They wore a different kind of suit - no logos.

I’m still trying to get a hold of my video of my simulations. Hopefully, I can get it to post. :)

I took an abbreviated version of this class in college. A few months later, I successfully fought off two men who tried to assualt me in France using the techniques I learned. Thank God for this class!

this totally sounds like something my bf would ask me to consider doing. he’s been jokingly [i think] mentioning me taking tae kwon do classes for a while now but i keep laughing it off.

he has asked me to change a few of my habits, especially blogging-wise. i do take them to heart and do them because they actually make sense and i know he’s just looking out for me the best way he can.

I started to carry mace this year, because he was worried. I had to start walking a lot more at night so I think it just gives him peice of mind.

As we grew closer and fell in love, my guy started worrying about me. I remember getting defensive about it and telling him that I made it to adult hood just fine thank you. It took a few discussions before I realized that he didn’t think I couldn’t take care of myself; he just cared about me so much that the thought of something happening to me makes him say things like “drive safe” all the time.

lol, that does look fun and of course it doesn’t hurt to learn a thing or two about protecting yourself. hmm…my babe is a gamer and so I decided to start up playing wow (world of warcraft) with him and i’ve found that i like it, I think I’m more addicted than he is now…ahaha
