About Mrs. Kiwi

Just Can’t

December 6th, 2007 @ 2:29 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I’m having the hardest time getting used to my rings. It’s been a little over a month since I’ve been wearing my wedding band with my engagement ring together. They’re both very slim, so are probably 4 millimeters at the most together. They fit perfectly beside each other, yet are constantly annoying me by this feeling of metal.

As much as I love my rings (and I do love them both very much), it’s impossible for me to wear the wedding band alone, as it’s very thin, and ends up looking like a fashion ring - know what I mean? It’s not very… wedding band-y looking. After waiting so long to get my engagement ring, and then waiting another year and a half to get my wedding band, I’m not wearing one without the other - I’m impossible this way. You love me anyway, right?

Perhaps someday I’ll get another thin band, and wear the bands together, or sandwiching my engagement ring, but until then I must get used to this new piece of metal residing on my ring finger. The really funny thing is, Mr. Kiwi has taken to his band like a duck to water - mocking me with his daily, “I don’t even notice it’s on!”, while I’m sitting there twisting my rings back and forth (these darn things have a tendency to twist diamond side in) and muttering to myself. Okay, okay, Mr. Kiwi is pretty darn cute with his “I feel naked without my ring on.”

Anyone else having a hard time getting used to the new metal? How about your FI/Husbands? Do you think they’ll love their band as much as Mr. Kiwi?

I had trouble getting used to my e-ring (I’m not married yet), but now I do feel naked without it. However, lately it’s been DRIVING ME NUTS because I’ve lost some weight AND it’s colder outside, so my finger has shrunk. So it’s been slipping and sliding all over the place because it’s slightly top heavy. I even have a small blister on my left pinky now from trying to get it to stay in place!!

I dunno whether to get it resized yet because maybe my shrunken finger is just from the cold. But it could also be from the 13 pounds I dropped…but the thought of a too-tight ring makes me shudder with discomfort.

The point to this long story is, Mrs. Kiwi, are you sure YOUR ring is the right size? :) Good luck.

i requested a very skinny e-ring so it wouldnt bother me too much, but its cold in chicago and my fingers are freezing so i try to sit on my hands and then i get an imprint of my ring in my finger…i see no good solution

but FI has a ring that he wears all the time and flaunts that he has a ring tan

I’ve been thinking about ditching my wedding band. Just cause I think it distracts from the e-ring. Even though it’s just a plan band - I think the e-ring looks great on it’s own.

My hubby doesn’t wear his. I knew he wouldn’t. Which is why it only cost us $6 on the honeymoon. He loves it - just doesn’t like to wear it. (Plus since it was really HOT in Costa Rica we were a bit swollen - so it’s a little big on him now - and I told him it probably wasn’t cost effective to resize a $6 ring - if it’s even resizeable :))

It doesn’t bother me. My dad never wore his - so I guess I’m used to it. Plus when he does remember to put it on - for a date night or whatever - it’s really special! It’s cool that he thinks to wear it on those occasions!

Funny story. My dad was married for about 8 years to a college sweetheart before he married my mom. My grandmother (mom’s mom) gave him crap about not wearing a wedding ring - his response “I wore it the first time and it didn’t do any good” She never bothered him about it again :)

Hi Kiwi,

Mr Beanchar NEVER takes his rings off (he has an e-ring too) and the first thing I do when I walk in the door is take off ALL my jewelry.

Since I work at home and don’t go out much, this means I log very few hours “en-ringed” (or whatever the correct term would be).

I love my rings but I find it hard to type with them on. When we are out I definitely fiddle with them a lot— more out if absent-minded neurosis than discomfort.

I can relate to the diamond-to-the-inside prob b/c I sometimes wear my grandmother’s wedding ring on my right hand and it always swings around.

This page has alot of info on various remedies for turning rings:
http://professionaljeweler.com/archives/articles/1998/nov98/1198fys1.html

I’ve been hesitant to do any of these to my grandmother’s ring b/c there’s an inscription all around the inside. Still looking for less permanent solution….

I started law school in late August and one of my classmates had gotten married two weeks earlier. For the first two weeks or so of school, he played with the ring constantly - twisting it, toying with it, taking it off and putting it on - it was really cute to watch him get used to it.
My boyfriend has a engineering ring he wears on his right hand and he is always playing with it. He takes it off and spins it around on the table, etc. It’s a little annoying, but I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t do that with a wedding band.

I have nothing to contribute as I don’t wear rings (not engaged yet), but I must say, that is a beautiful and really cute picture! I’m lovin’ it!!

I got some “14 kt. white gold” (I think that means the color, not the material) ring guards from Amazon, and they work great. They’re just little pieces of metal that you attach to the inside of your ring to make it a little smaller. They’re a little tough to get on (you’ll need some sort of pinching tool–I’ve done fine by improvising), but work great once you do. My hands shrink in winter and swell in summer, too, so I was really glad to find these.

I love my wedding band so much. It is wide-ish, about 3 mm, and just plain plain platinum. Now that i am married i hate that my solitaire takes away from the wedding band with it’s bling. So…..sometimes i wear my e-ring on my right hand and my plain band alone on the left.

Oh and Jillian - You and I are the same!!!! My hubby does not wear his and i dont mind. (linving in NYC i feel like he would get hit on more if he wore it, ha ha) but i don’t mind about him not wearing it cause my dad does not wear one and he has been with my mom for 33 years. he too was married before and wore one as your dad did, but it did not work out either. lol….

I was married in September and it took me until a few weeks ago to get used to my rings. Even though they fit perfectly separately, they felt so tight together. They are actually sized right, just my finger needed to get used to the added surface area. I also learned to take them off individually.

The only thing that still bugs me is that they slide separately when my hands are really cold.

Good luck getting used to them….but I’m sure you will!

Not sure from the picture but do you have comfort fit on your rings? I have comfort fit on my e-ring and I barely feel the thing. I have another ring that I got from my mom that is not comfort fit and I feel that ring all the time. So maybe an easy fix would just be to take the ring to jeweler and get the edges rounded. Trust me, it makes a difference!

My guy’s grandma had a wedding band that looks exactly like the one in your picture….it’s so small I don’t know how she wore it on it’s own. When I got it, it was soldered to the engagement ring (which then became my engagement ring), and it’s great. Maybe combine the two?

After lurking here forever, I finally got engaged this weekend! I knew the design of the ring beforehand (we worked on it together), but now that it’s actually on my finger, it’s just so damn HEAVY! guess there was a price to pay for wanting a thicker, heavily engraved platinum band… i’m definitely not complaining too much, though!

I don’t like wearing jewelry and I’m clumsy. I got engaged in September, and I still sometimes leave my ring at home, in a box, where its safe. I am kind of looking forward to trading it in for a simple band! My fi doesn’t wear jewelry, he doesn’t even wear a watch, but he says he’ll wear a ring. Neither of my parents wear their rings, they don’t fit anymore, but they’ve been married for 28 years and have had 5 children, and I don’t think they worry about it for a minute!
