About Mrs. Bubblegum

GLAVIN!

December 7th, 2007 @ 3:50 pm by Mrs. Bubblegum

What’s the integral of one over cabin??

It’s log cabin + “c” = HOUSEBOAT!!!

Tee hee. If you just laughed at that, then:
a) I have a million of those, don’t you worry,
b) You will understand my need to incorporate some true geekiness into my wedding, and
c) Yes, you need to make the assumption that it’s log base e or natural log, and yes, it was an indefinite integral. Gimme a break, it’s a joke. :)

After much thought, I decided that the best way to do this would be through wedding favors… and when someone suggested to me the idea of personalized Rubik’s Cubes, my head exploded with glee.

But there’s ONNNNE tinnnnnnny little detail.. $29.95. EACH ($19.97 at WalMart). If I had that kind of money to spend on 125 guests, then.. well, I still wouldn’t. So, one minor setback. But they don’t have to be personalized, right? Who wouldn’t love a Rubik’s Cube, even if it’s all primary colors? I mean, how much could a regular Rubik’s Cube possibly cost??

The answer is $9.82. I even spent a few hours scouring the internet for something cheaper. I think the lowest it got was around $7. Still more than I can really afford. Did I mention that I’m cheap? So what if it were smaller?? Mini Rubik’s Cubes!! Or, even better, fake mini rubik’s cubes that look and function like real ones, but they’re soooo much cheaper!

One hundred Rubik’s Cube keychains for $50!!!!! There may even be a 150 count price… but the point is, they’re cheap. And I loved the idea. I even planned to get mini stickers and somehow make one of the sides personalized myself. Unfortunately, it was not Mr. Bubblegum’s favorite idea, so I let it go (but if anyone does this, ppleeeeeease send me pictures so I can live vicariously through you!).

For fun, here are a couple other geeky favors that I found:

Anyone else trying to express themselves in favor form? Or have any good geeky favor ideas that I could use?

Sadly, I don’t have any ideas for favors- but one of my geeky friends named tables after his favorite elements on the periodic table.

Ooooh, Miss Bubblegum, you are awesome.

We were thinking about doing the elements thing too… then fundamental constants (we’re physicists)… then I thought about pictures that I had taken, but in the end, FI thought that our guests wouldn’t “get it” so we’ll have to make it more simple. Perhaps pictures + names. But do guests really get confused? Can’t they figure out how to match a picture with another one?

I love the log cabin joke, I think we had those for extra credit once :-)

We’re doing a bit of a calculus theme as that’s where we met (nerds I know! both engineers so it’s sort of excused). I’ll have to show you our invites once they’re all finalized. definitely love the nerdy stuff though! and honestly, a lot of equations and theorems are quite pretty if you look at the overall picture and not try to understand them. I’m sure your guests will get the idea without being too confused.

also, for nerdy favors check this out: http://flickr.com/photos/jemsweb/26731530/
much fancier than any of our ideas…

i loved the joke! haha. i can’t believe i got it…but then again, 3 years of being a math major before switching majors will do that to you.

for the cheesiness of it…

Q: what kind of bra does a mermaid wear?
A: an algae-bra

^and this is why I’m banned from telling jokes.

We did personalized decks of cards, as a nod to his staunchly bridge-playing family, and my pinochle and oh shaw family. Not so geeky.

However, I do hereby bequeath unto you the following unused reception ideas:
-numbering the tables zero through aleph OR numbering them as constants (or really, just throwing e and pi tables into the normal numbering)
-having equations on the escort cards, scaled in difficulty based on the mad math skillz of the guest (grandma shouldn’t have to know the cosine of zero to find her seat, but others might find that too easy)

As you can see, I married a mathematician. We had a lot of word puzzles at the wedding, and got a lot of complaints about the lack of math puzzles. Check out the “puzzles” page on our website for the “Math/Not Math” game; it’s mostly math vs music, based on our backgrounds, but it’s easy to adapt to other fields.

My husband, who is also an actuary, laughed for such a long time at your joke!

I don’t know if this qualifies as geeky, but I saw this at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and couldn’t put it down: http://www.magicubes.com/products/catalogcubes.asp

Still kinda pricey, but very unique.

haha, I’m glad the joke was well-received. It’s among my favorites (though my absolute favorite is yet to come).

Dahlia & Sara - awesome! I’m chem-stupid, so I probably wouldn’t be able to find my table :)

MissV - those chocolates look SOOOO COOOL. I LOVE it. and yes, I definitely want to see your invites!

Sarah - Let me tell you.. I have spent SO much time joking about sending people to their seats using equations. Hehe and I think it’s HI-larious. Problem is, Mr. Bubblegum doesn’t think his side of the family would be able to sit (his burn, not mine)!

I love the personalized photo Rubik’s cube idea. My husband Mark would have loved this idea for our wedding if the price was lower.

I just now found them here for possibly $11.50/250.

$10.75/250 for 4×4
http://www.toylounge.com/curucu4pa.html

One custom side is $6.75/250

HERE’S THE ONE FOR YOU:
$3.25/150 for custom Rubik’s key chains:
http://www.toylounge.com/curucuke.html

We ordered customized napkins with weird facts about ourselves ($6 per set of 50), but they arrived the day after the wedding. One of them was going to say:

Mark can solve a
Rubik’s cube in
under 2 minutes

I can send you info on where to order napkins if you’re interested. If you end up using the links I’d love to hear about it. kmikulis at gmail dot com.
