Mrs. Gummi Bear's Picture
Mrs. Gummi Bear, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Japanese Importer/Illustrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Game Developer/Programmer Engagement Date: April 15, 2006 Wedding Date: October 13, 2007 Blogging Since: June 19, 2007 Venue: Organic farm an hour from San Francisco About Me: I live for anthropologie, design blogs, sweets, japanese zakka, and vintage goods. We just bought our first home together and live with our two puppies and cat - it's a strange mixture of vintage, high-tech (we have 7 computers and 21 video game systems in all), and a whole lot of fur. Our wedding tries to embody the Japanese idea of "slow life", which is truly taking the time to enjoy food, company, and your environment!
About Mrs. Gummi Bear

“He’s not Jewish”
-takes one look at Mr. GB’s photo- “No, he’s Jewish, what’s his last name?”
“xxxxberg”
“He’s Jewish”
“Everyone thinks he is, but he’s not!”
-looks at the ceremony marker- “He’s Jewish.”

Despite all the things that would make Mr. GB very apparently Jewish, he is not. And while he doesn’t mind people making the mistake, he thought it would only further convince people that he was a liar when they saw his ceremony marker… that looks kinda like a chuppah. It is 4 poles with fabric held between them, but it’s just a nice marker for the ceremony! We wanted some natural that offered some covering, and this seemed like the perfect thing to just erect on the farm that didn’t seem completely out of place. We wanted everything to be natural and low-key, and this was no exception.

Mr. GB did a LOT for the wedding, much more than I expected him to. Not only did he go to every vendor meeting with me, look at magazines with me, be the phone contact for all our vendors, drove me to appointments here and there, went to Paper source alone many times, AND did every single craft project with me… he also built our “chuppah” himself in our garage.

Yes, I ordered Mr. GB some birch poles, some lace (thank you to Jen for sewing the trim on), and asked him to go the hardware store for some tools. He went out and bought everything he needed, even traveling to a ton of stores looking for galvanized metal buckets since I was very specific about what I wanted them to be placed in, and then spent a few days locked in the garage to make our poles stand straight!!

The morning of the wedding, Mr. GB, his brother, his father and my BIL all went out and built it on the ceremony lawn. It was a bit windy, so they had to use some ribbon to make it a little more stable, but all in all, I think it went well! He is standing in the background speaking to our DOC in these photos, but I swear he was helping… or at least, so he says. Either way, liar or not, he gets credit for building it in the garage first.

Cover the buckets with some moss and we’re done! Not shabby, eh?

I could give you a million reasons why I love Mr. GB, like how when we were on an international flight from Japan he spilled a drink on himself within 1 hour of take off and just laughed at his luck… he got diaper rash, I told him he would. He still laughed, just with a slight twinge of discomfort. But the fact that he not only let me work towards my ideal of a wedding (knowing full well I’m an anal perfectionist) but took every step with me, never denied me a seven hour “talk” about my choice in ribbons, brainstormed ideas with me, and supported me being a bee despite the fact that he knew somehow the world would end up knowing about his case of diaper rash at the age of 23… it makes him the most tolerant and wonderful person in the world. Anyone willing to put up with me and pretend he enjoys it is special, possibly short-bus special, but I’m taking what I can get.

To show him I care, I’m going to pack baby powder with me on any future long flights.

I love it! I love the look of a chuppah as well, but I’m also not jewish! Oh and my last name is XXXXXBarger..instead of berger. But most people pronounce it “berger” so might as well be! HA!
The decoration came out so pretty! I love the flowers at the top!
Your bridesmaid hair is adorable too!
Love the look of it all together!!!

I’ve been toying with the idea of a chuppah. We both have Jewish fathers so it might be a nice nod to our heritage. I’m just not sure yet. But thanks for the inspiration and the photos.

Your non-chuppah chuppah is lovely! Where did you order the birch poles? I am Jewish and want to get some for my chuppah.

That looks awesome! How’d you attach the lace to the poles? We’re planning to make our own chuppah and that’s the part I’m most troubled about…

Hi Mrs. GB! How beautiful! That’s exactly the look we’re going for with our chuppah, and we’re both pretty handy, but we have no idea where to start… any way you and/or Mr. GB would be willing to share more detailed instructions?

First, Mr GB is a treasure.
you = lucky lady

Second, you should send this story to the folks at Desitin.
wacky publicity op = free ointment

Third, you should get Mr. GB to do a DIY chuppah segment for beeTV.
he does it wearing a toilet paper hanbok = 2000 points.

we got our poles from Nettleton Hollow, where we also got the manzanita branches. :) I’m not sure how he put it together, but I’ll ask Mr. GB about it. He literally was locked in the garage, so the first time I saw them standing up was at the wedding!

My BF actually is part Jewish, but he has a Dutch last name. In addition to that, he has an uncanny resemblance to his mother’s brothers, and gets called by their last name almost weekly.

That picture is beautiful!!! You are truly blessed to have such a helpful Mr GB :) My Mr was not excited about any of the vendor meetings I dragged him too! Well I think he enjoyed the cake tasting - but that was the only one he enjoyed :)

We were out running errands the other night and I had to go in Michaels to find some ’stuff’ for Christmas projects. You know being creative is not a ‘quick’ thing. I asked him which of two ribbons he though would better match our mantel decorations and he was just like ‘I’m a man - I don’t know’. He was actually better than he usually is and did not verbally complain - but I could tell by the body language when it was time to go :)

I love it– it looks so beautiful, peaceful, and nature-inspired. And you are a lucky girl– it sounds like Mr. GB was quite a trooper!
