First Dance Song

December 11th, 2007 @ 3:49 pm by Mrs. Lovebird

Mr. Lovebird and I are having the hardest time picking the song for our first dance. He even got the “Top 100 Pop Love Songs” and we went through them one by one.

Nick Lachey
(image via people.com)

One of the songs I thought was perfect was Nick Lachey’s “This I Swear”.  You can read the lyrics here.

However, Mr. Lovebird is against us using it considering the history of Nick and Jessica. He thinks it might be a bad omen and not a good way to start off the marriage. I have to agree that’s the lyrics are perfect, but I’m sure everyone’s thoughts are going to be: “why did they pick this; don’t they know Nick didn’t end up staying true to the words of his song?”

What do you guys think? Has this perfect first dance song been ruined? I mean there are plenty of other great songs out there, so I’m not too disappointed. I guess the search continues… any suggestions?

so are you going to rule out any song by someone who has gotten divorced or had a bad break-up after writing a song for their lover? that’s a lot of entertainers. I wouldn’t worry about the personal lives of the singers, it’s the sentiment that counts.

I’m sure many of your guests won’t even know the whole story or that Nick even sings the song. I wouldn’t :)

I say who care! Lots of songs over time have been linked to a divorced couple but some couples have stayed together. Pick a song that means a lot to the two of you. So if This I swear means something to you two then use it!
Plus Nick and Jessica were in love at their wedding! So I think that is a good sign!

Our song is a bit on th treacly side but we love it. I knew that he was planning to marry me when he told me that this song always makes him think of me. this song is by a country duo but it is not a twangy country song.

It is “Lost in this Moment” by Big & Rich. If you want to hear a sample check it out on amazon. It is on their “Between Raising Hell & Amazing” CD.

I picked Bob Marley’s Is This Love for our song.. But we considered quite a few others - here’s a couple suggestions:

311 - Love Song
Jack Johnson - Better Together
Sade - By your side
Ray LaMontagne - Shelter
Ben Harper - Forever
The Roots and Erykah Badu - Baby you got me
Etta James - At Last

Our first dance song was by Cheryl Wheeler and is called Gandhi/Buddha. The chorus is:
# I must’ve been Gandhi or Buddha or someone like that,
# I must’ve saved lives by the hundreds everywhere I went.
# I must’ve brought rest to the restless, fed the hungry too,
# I must’ve done something great to get to have you.

We danced to It Had to Be You, by Ray Charles. Which, he was quite the ladies’ man!

I think you should pick what feels right to you. If it bothers you to hear Nick singing it, it looks like there are some covers: http://tinyurl.com/34b8qp

We had “We are Man and Wife” By Michelle Featherstone.
I love how it is simple and beautiful.

We don’t even know the whole story of why they got divorced. Maybe he was really dedicated….

If you love the song and the lyrics are meaningful to you I think you should use it!

I Swear was originally a country song by John Michael Montgomery. You could use that version instead if it really bugs you!

Check out Keb Mo’s song I’ll be your water. It’s a splendid song and is in the running for our first dance song (we’re currently deciding between 4!). Also Ray LaMontagne’s Hold you in My Arms is lovely.

We used the same song! This I Swear by Nick Lachey, I thought the lyrics were perfect and not too many people used it either. We had a lot of guests came up to us and asked what the song was.

Regardless of their failed marriage, I think it’s a beautiful song =)

Well, according to the latest People/OK!/Us/etc., it was Jessica’s dad that drove her away from Nick, and Jessica has regrets about the divorce. Not that I read such things. So as long as you don’t have a quasi-incestual relationship with your overbearing manager-dad, you’re probably OK using the song.

Our song was Michael Jackson’s You Rock My World. I love the lyrics and the beat.

Well I think I just found my Unity Candle Song. I’ve been looking for something that would reflect everything we feel and “This I Swear” by Nick says it all perfectly!! And it’s not too long either!!!

Thank you! It’s PERFECT!!! :)

I’m in my 20’s and I’ve never heard this song till just now so definitely feel free to use it! I’m guessing most ppl haven’t heard it before (or know who’s singing it).
The lyrics are so sweet =)

lol @ rzblna. that’s what i’ve been hearing anyhow. but yeah, i wouldn’t necessarily take someone’s relationship history into consideration. i love most of babyface’s work and he recently divorced his wife. that’s a whole lot of great songs that wouldn’t be used then and that’s a waste of some quality music.

our first dance song was hard to pick, i didn’t pick until the day of the wedding….i think most celebrity marriages are designed to fail, they have so much money and fame and it’s easier to choose the easy way out when the road gets bumpy. i’ve seen my own friends’ relationship change because of an increase or decrease of financial security.

i chose “from this moment” by Shania Twain

My husband and I didn’t really give our band a lot of parameters and I’m still not sure what our dance song was, but it was sweet and pretty. I need to ask them.

Anyway, just a couple more to consider - I’m currently in love with these two:

“We’re Man and Wife” by Michelle Featherstone and Bernard Fanning’s “Watch Over Me”

Here’s a YouTube of Bernard Fanning:

And one of a wedding video with the Michelle Featherstone:

My husband and I didn’t organize the band so much, so I’m still not sure what our first dance song was. It was sweet and Celtic - I need to ask the band!

Anyway, two songs that you could consider: I’m obsessed with these songs right now and they’re especially cool because I think they are a little more obscure and sweet:

We are Man and Wife - Michelle Featherstone. Here’s a YouTube wedding video with it:

Watch Over Me - Bernard Fanning.
Here’s a YouTube of him in concert:
