About Mrs. Magnolia

Am I Crazy?

December 12th, 2007 @ 4:32 pm by Mrs. Magnolia

So, how exactly does one spend the morning of one’s wedding?

Our wedding ceremony isn’t until 7:30 p.m. My bridesmaids luncheon is at noon, and the rest of the afternoon will be taken up with getting everyone beautified. But what am I going to do with myself between the crack of dawn (when I’m sure to be wide awake, with restless energy and excitement simply getting the better of me) and noon?

I’m a runner, and I absolutely love road races. I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2006, I’ve done two different half-marathons here in Atlanta, and I’ve completed more 5Ks and 10Ks than I could possibly count. So I had been planning to go for a casual run on the morning of the wedding - what a great way to burn some energy, right?

Am I Crazy? : wedding Teamrac

With colleagues after completeing the Silver Comet Half-Marathon - I’m second from the right.

But this morning, I stumbled across some information that I found to be very interesting. There’s a 5K road race, on the morning of our wedding, that starts less than a mile from my house. Race time is 9:00 am, and given my recent finishing times, I should cross the finish line by 9:27 at the latest.

Am I crazy? Or should I make our wedding day a race day as well?

Honestly - I would totally do that. I’m a huge runner myself, and my ceremony is at 6. If I had the opportunity, I’d take it! I can’t think of anything more relaxing and stimulating on your big day. I would totally cheese it up, though, and do it with a veil on or something! haha

I think it sound great. 5K is only about 3 miles or so. If were to go for a jog you would be running that far anyway.

just be careful, you wouldn’t want a twisted ankle or road burned hands on your wedding day. Stay out of the pack and watch your footing.

Have fun & good luck!

Hmm well the wedding is pretty late, you have nothing specific planned til noon, it’s not a crazy early start, and you’re an experienced runner, so a 5K should be pretty easy for you… plus, if you’re anything like I was, you will be hyped up on adrenaline all day because of excitement!

I say go for it, it will def burn nervous energy, and last minute runs always help me out when I’m trying to look my skinniest - perfect for when you have a wedding gown to fit into! Maybe you’ll even achieve your fastest time :o)

Haha that’s awesome! I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants to do this =) Our ceremony’s going to be 11am, so we’re just going for a run instead, but still…

Yay runners getting married =)

I recently saw an episode of “Whose wedding is it anyways?” and the couple created their own 5K for the wedding party the day of the wedding. Now I think that is a bit much, but if you enjoy running the 5K sounds like a good idea. Worse comes to worst you made a donation to a good charity if you decide that you can’t make it to the race.

And if the weather is as nice in Atlanta as it is today, it will be perfect! You never know about the weather in Jan in Atlanta :)

I say go for it! Running will definitely relax you afterwards and you’ll be energized for the wedding. Just be careful! Don’t wear new running shoes that day or anything!!! Yay runners!

Great idea! I have a Bride’s run planned at 7:00 am and then we are having a Groom’s hike at 8:00am! Another way for out of town guests to spend more time with us and to see more of our town. (And I am from a family of runners)
Just be sure to get a veil to wear while running! I saw a bride at a race reently who had one sewn onto her hat!

Y’all, I didn’t even think about getting hurt! The odds are in my favor, because I’ve only ever fallen during a race once, but still…

Can you imagine?!? Here comes the bride, limping down the aisle because she took a spill during a road race that morning! Ha!

i agree with the “do it, but carefully!” camp. if you find running fun (something i believe in kind of like i do unicorns), then it could be a good start to a wonderful day.
but don’t fall or overdo it!!

I was thinking about doing a run the morning of as well. Then I was thinking my hair stylist typically doesn’t like me to have “freshly” washed hair for an up do, so think about that too!

I was in the middle of training for a half marathon when we got married. I ran 8 miles the morning of my wedding with my maid of honor. It was relaxing and fun. Do it!!

i definitely went running the morning of my wedding (couldn’t imagine not burning off the nervous energy!)…but I really enjoyed just running by myself. I ran aimlessly and with no agenda…it was therapeutic and gave me a moment to just think about what was about to happen. I did not want any more nervous energy added to my day that might come along with running a crowded race….or having to worry about being on time to yet one more event that weekend. :o) Just don’t overload yourself!!

Do it! Make sure to take pictures!!

I’d love to get in a good workout before the craziness begins, but I’ll be getting ready bright and early.

I don’t know… There’s a lot that could go wrong. The morning of my big degree recital, I stuck to the elliptical machine. That way I burned off some of that nervous energy but wasn’t worried about getting hurt.

That does give me an idea to see if there’s something in my neck of the woods on my wedding day. Most of my immediate and extended family are runners, so I’m sure they would appreciate it!

Be careful!

Ooo! Another runner bride! I met a friend for a 8 mile fartlek on the morning of my wedding and raced my husband in my wedding dress the day of! It was great to see my friend and to relieve a little pre-wedding jitters. Plus, if you run a pr it’ll make the day even better!!!

(My hub is also a runner and we incorporated a few running related things into the wedding, which I posted about on my running blog: http://notpeppery.blogspot.com. Yes, a little shameless promotion never hurt ;)

PS I rinsed my hair out after the run, but did not wash it per my hairdresser’s instructions. It was cool out so I didn’t sweat like a total pig so it worked out fine. Good luck!

Sounds like a blast!!! I was really bummed that the date my venue was available fell on the same weekend as the Country Music Half Marathon!! I’d run it the 3 previous years - but the wedding was definitely more important!! And now I can celebrate my anniversary in Nashville every year running! (If I had gotten married in Nashville - I would have figured out a way to swing both events!)

I’ve had friends plan a game of Ultimate Frisbee the morning of their wedding with the bridal party, family, and friends. They even had shirts made up for the teams.

My groom played golf the morning of our wedding. The local CC happen to have their Chamber golf tourney that weekend - so they just joined in. I think the two weddings team finished second to last and last - but they had fun! It was also a great opportunity for the guys from the two families to bond!
