Costco Is Canada Friendly!

December 14th, 2007 @ 12:13 pm by Mrs. Milkshake

At first I was depressed about having a wedding in Canada because I couldn’t get wholesale flowers shipped overnight to my doorstep, and I had no hope of taking advantage of Costco’s flowers. Not so! The new Costco in downtown Vancouver caters to Yaletown…. in addition to men’s suits, they offer bridal flower packages! And not only that, but I had entertained the idea of walking out to a small shoppe on West Broadway and picking out four random colorful bouquets in the $15 range, but looks like I can do it at Costco, too.

These are all photographs of the flowers that were in season around mid August of this year, so it’s a good indication of what would be available for the wedding. The only thing is these $15 bouquets are meant for vases - can we wrap some ribbon around them and pull off bouquets??

Are there any Vancouver brides out there that used any local “flower wholesalers”? What did your flowers end up costing?

what are some of the over-night wholesale florists that ship to the US? does the costco in the US offer the same service?
thanks in advance …

You can turn those vase bouquets into wrapped ones. But they will not hold together well if you just wrap them with ribbon.

You will need florist tape since ribbon will slip on the stems; while florist tape grabs them securly. It also helps keep the ribbon in place. I like the wider 1″ stuff for my bouquets. It mostly comes in white nad green. I frequently buy it off the local florist since the white and the 1″ are often hard to find at craft stores. The white is great if you have a lighter color or gauzy ribbon.

When you get the flowers cut the stems under water - it really does make them last longer because no air bubbles will form in the stem, keeping any new water from getting to the flower head. Let the flowers soak up water overnight or for a few hours so they have plenty of water to hold up all day.

Next just wrap the flowers in the tape as close to the top as you can for the look you want. the closer it is the firmer the hold. Be sure to overlap the tape and wrap it back up the stems as well as down. When you are done add the ribbon. Siple sewing pins witha flat head can be used to hold each end of the ribbon in if you want a sleak look. the ones witht he white head can be used to give a pearl effect. You do not want to use the long ones made for corsages since they can poke right through.

If you want the ribbons trailing out of the bottom pin these in at the top before you wrap the ribbon around or place them inside the stems them selves for a more evenly spaced look before you wrap the tape.

I’m doing my own flowers and our wedding is in Banff/Calgary. I have done some research into the US wholesale floral sites and it seems to be pretty easy to get them to deliver in Canada. It won’t be exactly overnight, since there is a slight delay at customs, but since flowers are shipped directly from growers, they are still much fresher than they would be if you got them via retail.

There is of course an extra delivery fee to Canada, usually per box (I think this takes care of customs fees - you just have to pay GST) but the flowers are so much less expensive I think it’s worth it.

I am considering farmstogo.com and theflowerexchange.com. I’ve heard good things about the latter on the Canadian weddingbells message board.

wow Tberry! thanks for all the info!!!

teacherbride: here’s a link to costco.com’s wedding flower section, and i didn’t look very hard into overnight flower delivery but you might be able to search weddingbee for it…

mango: there’s two florists within a stone’s throw of each other on west broadway…..between Macdonald and Alma on the south side…not sure what they’re called though.

Unfortunately for Canada (exception Vancouver according to Miss Milkshake) the flower section of costco is not available. I tried to do my own flowers… but not having the costco option quickly put a halt to my idea.

Here is a rose wholesaler… they also have other flowers.

Good luck

Dont know if the flowers are worth the price… its always better to do a trial first (maybe your bridal shower could be it) ;)
