Best Photographer?

December 22nd, 2007 @ 9:46 pm by Mrs. Bee

A couple weeks ago I asked who you thought the top wedding photographers in the field were based on fame, name recognition, and editorial coverage (for a little project I’m working on).  I have a couple down, but I need to choose one more and need your help deciding!   Based on the aforementioned criteria and your responses, I’ve narrowed it down to these three - a little background info on each follows the poll.

Who is the top wedding photographer in the field today?

Christian Oth - For Oth, wedding photography offers all an artist could ask for. “It fuses together the grandeur of tradition, the poignancy of emotion, and the simplicity of realism,” he says. Manhattanites hire Oth to capture that confluence in an “honest” way, he says. “I have a natural shooting style that doesn’t leave anything out. I watch the story unfold — not just the main event but the quiet times, the telling details, and the unique personalities.” (via popphoto - voted one of top 10 wedding photographers of 2007)

Joe Buissink - All you probably need to know about Buissink’s talent is that none other than Annie Leibovitz has hired him. Twice, in fact — once to shoot her sister’s wedding, then to shoot her cousin’s. Getting the nod from America’s most famous photographer was “truly humbling,” says Buissink. Yet in the past 12 years Buissink has shot weddings for nearly as many celebrities as Annie has portrayed, including Jessica Simpson, Barry Bonds, and Jennifer Lopez. Jesh De Rox - Award winning experiential wedding photographer known for his fine art textures.

I voted for Christian from looking at the wedding portfolios. Indisputably, all are incredibly talented artists with each their own feel and style.
However, when I looked at Jesh De Rox’s wedding photos, I got a feeling of just the couples themselves, always very somber or serious, without any sign of happiness or moving life.
While I very much loved some of Joe Buissink’s STUNNING wedding photos, they all felt very classic and subtle as well. Though the photos with children seemed to impart the most life, I felt it was lacking some emotion of the marrying couple.
On the last website I visited, Christian Oth the feelings were there! The photos showed so much of the joy, happiness, and celebratory mood of the occasion. There was presence of the friends and family around them. You could see how elated the bride was. You could see the silly moments, the tender moments, the moments that just fly by when you are having the best day of your life. (Having been in weddings before - that’s the feelings I remember and see it captured so well in his photos).
Whew! What a long reply - but I just wanted to state my “why”, especially when I see Christian at the bottom of the votes.

Ahh!! I’m so excited to see this! My fiance and I put down our 50% deposit last wk for Joe Buissink!

We went through tons of different wedding photography websites and narrowed it down to a few whos studios we would go into visit. Joes was first studio that we visited but after that one visit and seeing his amazing, stunning, spectacular, wonderful photos I knew that he was the one!!! (You have to see the pictures in person… theyre even more beautiful than the ones on the website.) In addition to that, he’s just the sweetest guy youve ever met!! We didnt have to visit any studios after that. We gave him our deposit the day after we decided on our wedding date (which isnt until 2009!!).

Most photographers these days photoshop the hell out of your pics and we knew that was NOT at all what we wanted. Joe does is color in digital and b&w in film. Its a very good mix. Its amazing how captures such raw emotion on photos. He does NOT photoshop the photos!! He doesnt need to. He’s that talented… his ability to capture those “moments” are simply incredible.

If any of you are looking for a photographer, I highly recommend that you pay a visit to his studio.

Sorry for rambling… I’m just so excited!! :)
