Getting Down

December 26th, 2007 @ 2:37 pm by Mrs. Robin

We need to have control of the music. That was decided from the beginning. I have just heard too many stories from couples who made detailed lists, provided songs, and then heard none or little of what they wanted. Add to that the fact that a great many of our dates were to concerts and shows, and we needed to rock the iPod wedding. So a friend of Mr. Robin will provide ceremony music with her guitar, and then when the reception rolls around we will have an iPod full of all the songs we love.

However, we have an issue… What song are we going to dance to for the first dance?! We have it down to two, which you can listen to thanks to YouTube:
First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes - this is a really sweet video.

Why We Like It: This declaration of love and commitment because it is so real. It talks about how amazing love is, but also that it is scary and full of hard work. So awesome.
My Favorite Lyric: “Yours is the first face that I saw/ I swear I was blind before I met you”

I Wasn’t Prepared by Eisley

Why We Like It: Because for us it is true. We didn’t think when we met that this would be love, we were not prepared at all, and, also we went through a period of separation while we reflected on making this commitment. I think this song really speaks to that. Also we LOVE Eisley.
My Favorite Lyric: “Oh, I wasn’t prepared for this…”

So which one should we dance to?

Of course we plan to play this song also, because “Love is like a Roll of Tape” just speaks to everyone, right? Oh and we are goofs who are obsessed with Flight of the Concords.

My Fi and I are in the same boat- torn between two songs that both speak volumes about US…. We’ve decided to have our cake and eat it too…. We’ll be dancing to one as our first dance… and then at the end of the night, everyone will clear the dancefloor and let us have one last dance…. while they all assemble out front with our get-away sparklers and such… sort of an intimate closure to the whole big day

Good Luck!

I love “First Day of My Life” and the Eisely song. I am glad that we are essentially the same person.

First Day of My Life has my vote, good luck!

ohhh, tough call! i like the lyrics to the bright eyes song better and think it’s a more “typical” first dance song. but i LOVE LOVE LOVE eisley and especially that song. it’s sooo pretty!

we’re not sure yet either but are thinking maybe “destiny” by zero 7.

i wish we had danced to “first day of my life” but we had been to a friends’ wedding 2 weeks before and they danced to the same song. it was between that and “when you come back down” by nickel creek, but we felt the second was a bit too sad (it was “our song” from when i moved away for a number of months). Now I wish we had just picked one of those songs since they’re ours; we went with a more traditional song, and I wasn’t too overly pleased about it afterwards. Ahh well live and learn. I’d go with first day of my life… it’s fabulous. and you can sing along to it! it’s almost impossible not to.

We are using Bright Eyes - First Day of my Life as our song, so I highly recommend it ;)

Is Bowie in Space appropriate… or It’s Business Time by the FOTC? If not, I’d go Bright Eyes!

the eisley song is about the eldest member of the band not being prepared to be a mother when she had her daughter because she was still a teenager, etc. so just a heads up on that song. nonethelss, that song, when i first heard it, was on repeat for a very long time. i love it and it is so pretty. just thought i’d give you a context for the song though. :)

I love both of those songs! I do have to say I’m partial to the Bright Eyes song because I am determined to use it in my own wedding. And if you have any tips on the iPod wedding, please do advise!! I know we are doing it…I just don’t know how!

ah, we are trying to decide how to use ‘first day of my life’ in our wedding– it seems hard to slow dance to? but ah, how i love it- i cry everytime i hear it and the video- man.

our other contenders:
-’have a little faith in me’- the john hiatt version- really the song that has been ours the longest, but also seems hard to dance to.
-heavenly day- patty griffin– watch her sing it here:

this song brought me to tears the first time i heard it. not a lot of history for us with this song, but i can imagine dancing to it on our wedding day. so beautiful.

nic - There is definitely an iPod wedding post in the works. Mr. Robin is doing that part of the wedding, so honestly I haven’t really done much with it yet but tell him what I like.

But I will be working with him the next few days on it and then testing it at the location, so I will let you know what I learn

Both songs are so lovely, but the Bright Eyes one is absolutely perfect for a first dance song! I found myself paying a lot more attention to the lyrics, and, to me, they were more meaningful than the lyrics in the Eisley song (at least in the context of a wedding first dance). Let us know which one you pick! :-)

I’d vote for Bright Eyes! And I look forward to your iPod wedding post - we’re doing the same and I could use some pointers.

ditto on the post about the ipod dj! we’re doing it too! are you getting lights to put up? that’s the one thing we aren’t sure about… our venue has a great sound system but would be be weird to have music coming throughout the whole room?

[…] the same lines as Miss Robin’s post about her first dance song, I thought I’d jump on the music bandwagon and throw out a few options […]

I vote for Bright Eyes too Miss Robin! Your f first introeduced me to that song on youtube with mynameismegan’s version of it, and dang, is that a great rendition, too! I liked it so much we put baby Jack’s waterbirth youtube video to the tune of it, as he was also “born here in the doorway…” I do love Eisley, too, though and I liked the idea of having a farewell dance, maybe you could end the night on that note?! Can’t wait to see you guys this wee

My vote would be for Bright Eyes, it’s such a fabulous song! I’m definitely interested in any tips you have for an iPod reception, I’m starting to put some playlists together and trying to research how this will work logistically.
