Starting Off The New Year Right

January 2nd, 2008 @ 5:15 pm by Ms. Dahlia

After Miss Jasmine’s post about resolutions and Miss Bubblegum’s post about Wii Sports, I thought that I would share one of my New Year’s resolutions.Normally, I’m not a huge fan of New Year’s resolutions (why do you have to wait for a new year to start self-improvements?), but this year it seems like just what I need to get my butt in gear for the wedding. And by butt, I also mean thighs, abs and back.

You see, I had my first dress fitting last week, and it went really well. With my shoes, the dress is the perfect length as it is (anyone else who will be in the 5’11″-6’ tall range with shoes getting a Jenny Yoo dress: you need the extra 3″, but not the extra 6″.)

Being made of silk shantung, the dress doesn’t weigh very much compared to many other bridal dresses; the downside to the lightweight material is that all bustiers/corset/strapless bra contraptions show through the dress. At the recommendation of the seamstress at the shop, I’m getting cups sewn in and am using fashion tape.

This fashion tape is available here. It eliminates any possible wardrobe malfunction.

So how does this relate to New Year’s resolutions? Well, over the summer, when I ordered the dress, I had lost 7 pounds. May not sound like a lot, but I’ve gained it all back since then. (This is what happens when you quit the gym cold turkey. Sighs.) This also means that the dress is a little bit tighter in the midsection than I would like. If it fits well there when I go back in March, I will not need any other alterations.

Over Christmas break, Mr Dahlia’s mom mentioned that she was training for a half marathon (scheduled a few weeks before the wedding) following this plan. Since she always wants Mr Dahlia and I to run with her when we’re in Cleveland, I told her that I would train as well, even though I won’t be running the half marathon. Nice thing about the plan is that it only has 3 runs a week, with 2 additional days for cross-training. Works out well for me, since I’ve already scheduled in 2 days a week to swim this term.

To kick things off, I ran for 25 minutes this morning.

Anyone else trying to get in better shape? Want to do a check in once a week? I’d be happy to share my progress if you would be willing to share yours.

I got up at 4:30 and made it to the gym by 5 am for 40 minutes of cardio. Despite my need for a bit of a nap I feel fantastic! (And the early morning hour is easy for me once I get back in the swing.) I’d love an extra bit of accountability… I need to get into shape for my health. The looking good in my wedding dress is just a bonus!!

What half marathon is she running? The Flying Pig?

My motivation is the upcoming snowboarding season (yes I know it’s Jan already - but my first trip isn’t until the end of Feb - so it’s still upcoming!). I am way out of shape and want to be able to fully enjoy my trips - especially the one out West! I too have begun a new ‘program’. All the exercises are geared towards snowboarding muscles. In a way it makes it more exciting because I can think about my trips when I workout! I’m also getting into spin classes - that will hopefully help out my endurance!

Plus my husband gets pretty disappointed if I’m not eating healthy and working out. I go through phases, sometimes I’m a gym rat, sometimes I’m not. I think he’s afraid one of my lazy phases is going to stick - which would lead to a very unhealthy future. So getting back on the bandwagon will make him happy :) He won’t be so happy when I kick his butt on the tennis court next summer though ;)

I love the idea of doing a once-a-week check-in to stay accountable — great thought!
I am also actively trying to get into shape, though it’s been going on for a while, so it’s not really a New Years thing. I seriously injured my back in the summer, and have had a LOT of resulting back pain. Since I absolutely was prohibited from doing any kind of real workout, and I am completely incapable of maintaining my weight from eating due to lots of metabolic problems from too many years of chemotherapy, I ballooned up instantly — I gained 12 lbs since the back injury!
My goal now is to learn to withstand the pain in my back, and not have to pop vicodin after every workout. I figure that it’s always painful to start working out, and your body learns to adjust, so hopefully I’ll be able to learn to work through the pain. We own an elliptical, so I’ve been trying to alternate days on the elliptical with days of heavy stretching and lifting.
I definitely want to lose the extra pounds ASAP, and I’d love to drop another 10 before my wedding in May!

I definitely need the motivation! The once-a week check in sounds great. I could lose some weight before the wedding

Weddingbee 5K? :) I’d love to join you. My dress (just bought it!) fits nicely, but I could look way better - as well as compete even better if I were in better shape. I’m in.

Be careful. That dress might just be falling off of you by May! Have fun and welcome to the wonderful world of running :D

A check-in once a week is a great idea!

I agree about New Years resolutions…I don’t normally make them, because if I’m going to change my behavior, I won’t wait until the New Year. But with my wedding in June, I want to start working out again. I waited until after the holidays because I want to get off to a good start. I enjoy being in shape, but looking sexy in a wedding dress is that much more motivation!!
