Unexpected Time Spent Together?

videogames

Has anyone else unwittingly picked up a hobby of your fiance’s that you never thought you were capable of doing?  I used to like hanging out in the room, doing something else while Mr. Milkshake played games whose names I could never recall. Soon, I gave many games nicknames, so I retained a strong hold of my girlyness.

When I was younger, Super Nintendo was the coolest thing, and I’m sure we all had gameboys (heck most people our age, guys and girls alike, have the nintendo DS), and donkey kong country and all the sequels rocked my world. But then the video game industry introduced the concept of 3D, which soon dominated, and I couldn’t maneuver my little Mario guy in a straight line, quickly became dizzy, and gave up. Gone were the days of running across the screen, from left to right, jumping on bad guys.

After dating Mr. Milkshake, I came to learn these were called “platform games.” When we first started dating he trained me to play a soccer game, Winning Eleven, and he was surprised at how good at it I became. Somehow he managed to suck me into playing Resistance with him last year and with the recent releases of Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3, I can officially play “first person shooters.” Not well enough to play against any hard core guys online, but well enough to get a few kills in when him and I play together….although I can totally beat a pack of 16 guys online in Motorstorm.

When Rock Band first came out, Mr. Milkshake and I happened to stumble upon it by fluke at Costco and snatched it up. An old boss of mine had pre-ordered it on Amazon, but then he was told it wasn’t going to arrive in time for Christmas! So I called around to try and find it as a surprise, then went to Circuit City. As I was paying for it, the sales-guy was telling me how lucky I was to get it, to which I said, I already have it - this is for a friend. Then he proceeded ask if I had guitar hero, yes. A PS3? Yes. A wii? Yes. An xbox 360? Yes. And then he said “Wow! so you’re a gamer!” that left me totally speechless.

Somehow in the course of the last three years, Mr. Milkshake had transformed me into a gamer?! But it’s okay. My DS is light pink and I like chopping things in Zelda. And it’s also okay, because it’s cute to see him happily pick up my new honking-big camera and take snapshots of me. And of course I get to rub it in his face and say “how many guys have girlfriends that will help them shoot down people in World War 3?”

So have you picked up a hobby of your fiance’s that you never thought you were capable of doing?

I have become a gamer too. I haven’t gotten into first person shooters yet. My FI is working on it though :)

I’ve picked up Nascar as a hobby; have a fav driver and we go to races (even out of state when we can), watch every Sunday on TV . . . never would have thought I’d like it so much but we have a lot of fun sharing this hobby now.

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. Ever since moving in with the BF I can now hold my own playing Call of Duty and Resistance and I’m the best Rock Band drummer out of all our friends. But I too have a pink DS to keep up my girlish appearance.

And I seriously had a crush on the hottie in Uncharted.

I know what you mean about not being able to evolve with the games. I still don’t play. But…I wanted to comment that my mom is now a gamer because of my stepdad. He had two shoulder surgeries back to back and wasn’t allowed to move his arms much. Well to prevent a serious case of cabin fever, we bought him a game system. He got pretty good, but was bored playing by himself, so he convinced my mom to play too. She knows more about the games out there than I do.

I have picked up a love of local music from my guy though…Feral Children anyone?

In addition to the video games, I never thought I’d be a hockey fan. Now I know what “icing” means, that “five for fighting” is not only a band, and how to correctly pronounce “Toews.”

Haha - My hubby would like me to get more into gaming - then a new game system would be in our budget. We almost got one this Christmas - but decided I would enjoy the Wii and him the Xbox 360 - so we didn’t get either. We did get guitar hero for the PS2 - yes we are old school.

As far as picking up hobbies - we luckily share many of the same - but have gotten more involved in some since getting together - Nascar, golf, fishing, road cycling….

This isn’t really a hobby - but I NEVER thought I’d be a dog person. Animals are OK - but I’m not big on actually having them in my house! Well unfortunately a he came as a package deal with his dog Grisman. Gris grew on me - though there were some tearful times! Who’d a thunk after returning from our honeymoon I’d be the one suggesting we get another dog to keep Gris company! So now I own two dogs! AND I love them both :) Still don’t really like other people’s dogs! My friends are all in shock and tease me constantly.

Also - the hubby is running (ok maybe walking) a half marathon with me in less than two weeks. Running in these has been a big part of my life for the past three years and I’m really excited to share it with him! (I’m pretty sure it will be our first and last race together!)

Yesterday, FH took me to the driving range for the first time, and I actually didn’t do too badly. Maybe there will be a set of golf clubs as a wedding present in my future… hahaha

I’ve also taken up racquetball, which we try to play once a week together though we don’t keep score because then we get too competitive and mean.

I picked up video games too. I used to think they sucked your brain out, but now I’m conversant with all major game platforms and I actually have opinions about what games are better than others. It’s weird though; around here no one had trouble getting rock band if they wanted it. I’m completely in love with it.

I had never owned a video game system in my life until I got married! now i own 5 video game systems! It’s crazy … i’m so much better at games now than i had been before. I guess your spouse does change you, right?

My husband is not only a video gamer, he’s a board gamer too. His whole family (all 8 of them) plays board games to bond, and when we first got married I wasn’t very good. Now I can game with the best of them! Our favorite little known board games are “Bang!” and Bohnanza (a game about beans). They are a fun alternative to video games, and incite friendly competition among your guests.

Despite trying VERY hard (I have a wii, fi buys games he thinks I’d like for the ps3, etc.), my fi has not managed to make me into a gamer - just a casual enjoyer of certain games. I also just instituted a house rule that for a video game to come into the house, one has to leave. Because it was getting a little insane.

However, he did introduce me more successfully to both scuba and snowboarding. And he’s taught me a lot of card games. :)

I don’t always lose at bridge or cribbage anymore, and now I sometimes recognize why I’ve lost. Baby steps.

FI is a gamer and we have every system. Yes, every one of them. The only one that isn’t hooked up is the Atari. Even the original NES is hooked up to our HD LCD!

He is slowly trying to turn me into a gamer. He bought me the pink 360 controller and an XBox Live gift card so I could play Tetris. lol He’s shown me how to navigate the menus and download new games to try.

He also got me the pink DS for Christmas (hmm, pattern?) and I’ve really enjoyed playing it. He plays BioShock while I curse Mario on the DS (I SUCK!) and he is just so proud to see me playing a video game.

I swear… he’s trying to turn me into a gamer!!
