Dishing It Out

January 3rd, 2008 @ 5:18 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

On New Year’s Eve day, Mr. Cupcake and I took advantage of having the day off of work to begin our registry at Crate and Barrel. We had started a registry at Bed, Bath & Beyond a few months ago, but were hoping to find dinnerware and flatware at Crate and Barrel that suited our taste more. We were immediately drawn to two patterns at C&B:

Dishing It Out : wedding philadelphia registry CeladonCeladon

We both were drawn to the light pattern on the Celadon design, as it adds a little interest without being too loud. I also like the simplicity of the shapes, and I like that the pieces aren’t too heavy or clunky.

Dishing It Out : wedding philadelphia registry HaloHalo

We were also debating on the Halo design, since it is a bit more practical in its simplicity. We like the subtle lip along the outside of the plates that isn’t too wide. Although I’m usually someone who is drawn towards color and patterns, I wanted some everyday dishes that won’t seem dated in a few years, and won’t necessarily dictate whatever else we decide to put on our table over the years.

After a LOT of back-and-forth, we ultimately decided to go with the Halo design. When we got home after our excursion, though, we started to second-guess if the Halo dinnerware is meant for everyday use, or if it is intended for use as fine china. It is listed under “bone china” on the Crate and Barrel website, and there is no real distinction between everyday or special occasion dinnerware.

What do you think? Does it work as everyday dinnerware? Or should we find something more casual to use on a daily basis?

Its totally great for everyday use! You can get so much mileage out of white dishes, you can dress them up in so many ways! And food always looks great on white plates…

We actually registered for the Celadon set, and I LOOOVVVEEE them! Even washing dishes makes me happy. They are so gorgeous and delicate, and most importantly - WELL MADE and quite sturdy! They are made in Japan, and Japan has fab dishware.

i think it’s definitely a design you can use for every day - simple and classic. is price a factor at all? you might want to consider how much you’re willing to pay if you chip or break it (since that’s more likely if you use it every day). anyway, i like the design a lot - good luck!

The problem with the bone china of the Halo set is that it is a LOT more likely to chip or break. It’s certainly not too formal for everyday use, but if you’re likely to chip your plates, then I would avoid it (as in, if you put it in the dishwasher, expect several chips within a year or so). It’s a lovely set, but personally I like something more durable for my daily dishes.
I agonized over casual everyday dishes. We picked out our china with no problem but I couldn’t find a (relatively) inexpensive everyday set (I fell in LOVE with a set from Denby but they were practically as expensive as our fine china!). We were at a Mikasa outlet which was closing, and they were having phenomenal deals, plus an additional 30% off the already great prices, so we picked up a set of black and white polka dot dishes.. cute and whimsical for the time being, but when I get sick of them after a couple of years, I won’t feel guilty buying new everyday dishes since they were SO cheap.

It LOOKS good for fancy and everyday, however as others have stated Bone China definitely is a more “formal” material as it is more likely to chip, and (I don’t think your’s should be a problem since there’s not a metal rim or any design) but some isn’t dishwasher safe. They are very nice plates however !

We registered for all-white plates as well. It’s nice because no matter what, they match everything. I have different tablecloths I use during different seasons, and I can just switch out the chargers or add placemats to be festive without having to waste money (and storage space) on multiple sets of dishes per occasion. The Halo design is nice enough that you can use it for a fancy dinner party, and it’s also informal enough for dinner any night of the week. Just make sure they’re dishwasher/microwave safe!

We got very plain, white C&B dinner plates and bowls, but we have a small but growing repertoire of funky/silly/colorful smaller plates to combine with them. Right now we’re using purple ones with eggplants on ‘em, and when they get chipped or boring or too too out of style, we can easily switch them out without breaking the bank.

We have the Celadon set and we LOVE them!! All the C&B plates are super durable and you couldn’t go wrong with any set there.

We registered for the Staccato (also bone china, I think) at C&B but also registered for some more durable “nice” everyday dishes at Target. I figure we probably won’t use the Staccato every day, but we won’t save it just for “nice china” occasions.

That’s our everyday dishes too! We registered for formal china at B3, but chose the Halo for our everyday dishes. C&B salespeople made them sound very durable and we liked the fact that we could put them in the oven, DW, and microwave.
We haven’t unpacked them and started using them yet, but I can’t wait to!

We have the celadon as well! They’re so beautiful. Subtle enough color for everyday use, and I love the texture. We were eyeing the Halo as well, though. Registering rocks and you have eeeexcellent taste, madam! ;)

i saw the celadon set in c&b the other day and almost wished we had that set as our dinnerware. we chose the classic dinnerware and it’s even heavier than your set, it still looks great for casual or formal occasions.
