And We’re (Almost) Off…

January 3rd, 2008 @ 4:06 pm by Mrs. Raspberry

… on our second honeymoon!!!

Back in July when we got married, we took a short trip to Montreal for our honeymoon with plans of another trip to Thailand. Well it is a reality! We leave on Saturday for almost 3 weeks in beautiful Thailand. Now at least 1 week of that is work related for me, but we will have plenty of vacation time also.

We are going to be in Bangkok…

and Chiang Mai

and we will end the trip in Phuket for some good old R&R.

Mr. Raspberry and I have been working non-stop since we got back from our first honeymoon. We feel like we haven’t really had a chance to be newlyweds with all the stress of work and the holidays and are so excited for our get-away.

Mr. Raspberry surprised me with a cooking class as part of my Christmas present and I got him tickets to a Thai boxing match!

And another fun part of the trip is that our good friends (who are married) are coming too! So, not only will get to have honeymoon time the two of us, I have a friend to go do shopping and girly things with while Mr. Raspberry and our friend go to Thai boxing matches!

If you have been to Thailand, do you have any tips for our trip or places we have to see?

I loved thailand! It was the most amazing experience. We stayed at the peninsula- and it was amazing. If you go to chian mai you should go here:

I went to Thailand for my honeymoon 6 months ago and my husband and I always talk about it. It was absolutely one of the best experiences of our lives.

One of the things we did in Bangkok that is not in the tour books is to take a boat trip through the canals. You can rent a private boat for around 80 baht and you get to see how people live. It’s awesome. Just ask someone at your hotel to tell your cab driver where to take you.

Secondly, don’t be afraid of the street food. It is the best! I think the quality was more questionable (and expensive) in the restaurants. The key is to find where the locals are eating. Then you know it’s good. If you see a ton of tourists, go the other way. This is true in Chiang Mai as well.

Finally, if you are in Chiang Mai on a Sunday, go to the Sunday Market. That’s where many of the true finds are and the food is out of this world. The regular and famous market (I can’t remember the name) in Chiang Mai is not as authentic and very touristy. The Sunday market is where the locals shop and hang out.

Have a great time!

Oh ya. There is a little restaurant in Chiang Mai that is out of this world and where the locals eat. It’s call Huen Phen. You MUST go there.

How ironic! My fiance and I are getting ready to go to Laos, then Thailand for our wedding and honeymoon.
I assume you’re leaving shortly (we are leaving in 2 wks). I was told that this is the perfect time to go- not so hot nor touristy.
We go to Chiang Mai 1st, then to Khao Lak (1 hr from Phuket).
My friends just returned from Thailand and they said and I quote: “it really is the best place on earth”

i went to thailand for spring break with 3 girlfriends…it was a great get away…we hit those same cities, but were in chiang mai last. it was great, and the people are so kind and willing to help out with what ever they can. i would definitely visit the elephants, get a thai massage (as many as possible…very inexpensive), eat at as many local places as you can, visit the night bazars, and visit the temples.

We’re going to Krabi for a minimoon! (we live in Singapore) I recommend Krabi over Phuket anyday, its much more relaxed. Phuket can be overwhelmingly touristy along the beaches unless you stay at a resort that has a private beach.

There is a tiger temple where you can pet tigers in Kanchanaburi which is about an hour or so outside of Bangkok. We found out about them on the web and I think the tour was through our hotel. We had our own personal driver that first took us to the Floating Market and then to the temple and then to a place to ride elephants and I highly recommend it! It is

I second the canal trip through Thonburi. Catch a private boat northwest (I think) of Golden Palace. It was supposed to include a floating market but I never saw one.

Definitely check out Cafe Tamarind. They made amazing International vegetarian dishes (note: we’re not even vegetarian) like their bean salad and watermelon lime drink.

We also ate at two different locations of this vegetarian Thai restaurant:

The wrapped tofu veggie rolls were particularly good.

I can help you with Ko Samui if you end up there.

Skip Phuket; it’s overcrowded and a tourist trip. Go straight to Koh Phi Phi / Phi Phi Lei - it’s pure paradise. MAKE SURE you go to Maya Beach. It’s where The Beach was filmed - the entire little island will blow you away. I’ve been to island chains all over the world, and it remains to me, the most beautiful, ever. Stunningly clear water, snorkeling like you couldn’t believe. Heaven.

You will LOVE Thailand. So cheap, so accessible, so fun. Can’t wait to see your pics!!

Petting tigers at a tiger temple like Christine suggested sounds retarded—you will come back as the one armed bride!

Enjoy your second honeymoon! I have a quick question for you…you made a post regarding colored shoes, and you posted a pic of some red shoes with what looks like a large rose on each shoe…I’m in love with them and am desperate to find them…do you know what brand they are and where the came from? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I am going to Krabi in February 2009 and I am planning on having my wedding dress and my spouses cutaway suit/morning coat tailored there, but having few concerns on how much different fabrics are available and the quality of craftsmanship. Have you got an idea on what to expect? I know that in Phuket (and in Bangkok) the variety of fabrics is better, but we are going to Krabi for few other reasons too.

Mrs. Raspberry says:

gapgurl4u2c - I am sorry, unfortunately, I don’t know where those shoes are from… I found the picture when planning my wedding. Best of luck!

The fabric variety in Phuket and Bangkok is incredible (especially Bangkok) - basically, you can find ANYTHING you are looking for… Visit the “mall” in old siam… they specialize in fabrics and those types of accessories.

the quality varies GREATLY! definitely go to a reliable source!

Hi Mrs. Raspberry - I’m recently engaged and I’m going to blame that for why I can’t figure out how to private message you! Anyway, I’m living in DC and getting married in Buffalo AND planning on using Nickel City Studios - so we have a lot in common anyway I’d love to discuss some other questions I have about planning a Buffalo wedding out of town. Thanks! So if you get this and can message me thanks!
