Bad Bride Bubblegum

January 4th, 2008 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Bubblegum

Oy.

Yesterday, I heard the question combination I had been dreading:

Question #1: How long until the wedding? <Just under 5 months>

Question #2: Have you gotten your dress yet? <No, I haven’t even looked>

Honestly, I’ve been putting off going dress shopping. I know this might seem un-bride-like, but it’s just not something I’m looking forward to. First I said December. Then I said January. Now, it’s January, and I just plain don’t want to go. I am a bad bride.

But it didn’t stop there. In the past two days of work, FOUR – count ’em, FOUR – coworkers have asked me if I have my dress / when I’m getting my dress / why I don’t have my dress. Silence for the last 11 months of my engagement, but as soon as 2008 hit, BAM – everyone wanted the scoop on the dress.

Well, luckily, the fourth person to perform a dress inquiry also provided me with some valuable information… the $99 dress sale at David’s Bridal is going on now (and ending January 14th)!!!!!

All along, my plan was to go to David’s Bridal. I know that many people feel strongly that you can get better quality dresses at the same low prices elsewhere, but honestly, I think a number of their dresses are quite beautiful, and this is just what will work for me. SO, that said, I’ve made my appointment for this weekend, and hopefully one of those dresses will be mine!

In particular, here are some of the beauties that I’m eyeing (from the David’s Bridal website):

P9345:

davids1

T8778:

davids6

T8722:

davids3

T9309:

davids4

V9462:

So what element of your wedding are you putting off??

I definitely put off the wedding dress part. Ended up getting something sorta out of my budget and had to rush ship SOLELY because I did not want to look anymore and just wanted everyone off my back. OOPS!

Um, I’m also putting off the ceremony officiant/location. I still crossing my fingers that I can get married at my reception site although the coordinator there is dragging her feet….

I still have not booked my florist yet! And my wedding is less than 3 months away! EEEEEK!
On a side note, I LOOOOOOVE dress #1! Keep us posted on how it goes!

I also put off dress shopping… though not NEARLY as long as you did (I’m also getting married in May). I just hated the idea of going, and my first experience was awful so I had no desire to keep trying. My mother kept nagging and panicking though, and I hated the nagging even more than trying on dresses, so I finally just went ahead and did it and made multiple appointments the same week to just get it all over and done with.
Thus far, I’ve “put off” working on the invitations and finding a hair stylist, though not for any particular phobia, I’ve just been REALLY busy with the rest of my life, and haven’t had time. My mother is starting to nag about the invitations, though, so I guess they’ll be getting done relatively soon…

Meeting with the minister — now because we’re afraid of what he’ll say, but because we have to travel 5 hours to do so, and he’s very difficult to pin down. Also, I can only reach him via telephone — no e-mail — so this only promotes my laziness.

You’re so not alone in dreading dress shopping! I really put it off too- I’m not exactly sure why, but it was one part of wedding planning that I was not looking forward to. I must say, though, that after I finally made myself go- I ended up loving it! I hope you do too! Please post pics of the dresses you try. I love all the ones you posted- I think number 3 is my favorite!

Ms. Bubblegum,
I have the dress T8778 if you’re interested. I paid $300 for it, and I was going to donate it, but if you’re interested, I’d be more than happy to give it to you if you want it. The only downside is that I did not dry clean it (but that’s a whole lot cheaper than buying a new one). It’s a great dress and pretty much exactly what I wanted! I have a champagne colored sash, and the dress comes with a white sash. We just moved and I’m looking to get rid of some of the wedding stuff that has dominated my house for the last year. Let me know if you’re interested!

I tried on the last dress and it was gorgeous!! Whatever you do just make sure the dress is comfortable. Make sure you sit down in it too b/c some dresses are very uncomfrotable when you sit down which is something most poeple don’t think of. I am putting off my invitations. I think b/c I am so indecisive and getting them ordered and printed means I can’t change my mind. And I am lazy I think.
Good luck!

I didn’t have much of a problem finding my dress. It was one of the first I tried on and that was that. But I’m really dreading figuring out what everyone else is going to wear! How do you even begin to shop for menswear? And I don’t really know what style of bridesmaid dress would go best with my gown. Ugh.

I tried on a dress very similar to the last one in my dress search (not at DB), only it had little lace cap sleeves- I loved the way the lace parted in the middle- it was very sweet. I’m sure you’ll find something GREAT! Can’t wait to hear about what you pick (if you decide to post about it!).

If you go strapless from DB make sure to invest in double stick tape. my dress stretched WAAAYYY out in the top after moving in it for pictures and the wedding and was falling down and all bunchy in the waist area during the reception.

Don’t fret, Bubblegum! My wedding is in April and I *just* got my dress. Like you, people would always ask me what my dress looked like, and when I told them I didn’t have one yet they would make horrified faces. I almost had a panic attack last month when one of my co-workers responded with “You’re going to be wearing jeans down the altar if you don’t go soon!”

I bwalked into David’s Bridal at ten, tried on 6 dresses, and walked out with the second one I tried on at noon. It was a very easy (and fun!) process!

I’m going to David’s Bridal on SAT! I wanted to go there just to sorta use them to see what looks good on me. I did not know it was the $99 sale until I saw a commerical for it. Now I’m scared it will bride mania there! Oh well!

I just got engaged last wknd but since we are getting married July 25 I knew I had to get on it!

lovelove love the p9345!
i actually tried on the T9309 and it doesn’t look as nice in the pictures. i actually ended up with the oleg cassini CT203 from davids. all the oleg cassini dresses are pretty and i believe he only makes wedding dresses for david’s bridal.

although, the gown was the first thing i bought for the wedding (actually i bought it one week into my engagement), i didn’t want all the trouble finding the dress so that’s why i went to davids. I’ve heard horror stories, but i haven’t experienced anything horrific. my dress was the first one i put on and loved it. i didn’t want to be impulsive so i tried on a few more, but kept going back to the first dress. originally, i wanted white and ended up purchasing the champagne-colored one! :) i can’t wait to wear it!

I’ve been putting off looking at invitations. I dont want to do it at all. I know that I am gonna have a real hard time finding one that I like. The wedding is 6 months away and i think I’m supposed to place my order soon. I heard it takes about 3 months for them to print it and everything. So I really need to start ASAP. But good luck on the dress shopping. I’m sure you will find something that you will love!

For those of you still looking for invites, I would definitely check out Reaves (www.reavesengraving.com) They do thermography, engraving and maybe letterpress (or is that the same thing?). We got 100 invites & reception cards with a custom design and everything for <$300. Plus their turnaround is 4 weeks! (And for an extra $10 or so they’ll rush it and ship in a week).

I don’t want to deal with flowers. Or hair. Or decorating ideas. I think maybe I’m a bit tired of planning :-)

Same boat ms. bg! Although I have tried on dozens of dresses, the same poopy answer I have to give to coworkers is, “noooo I haven’t found one yet!” Good luck at DB!

wsukarebear says:

I tried on T8778 and everyone loved it: simple with a splash of whatever color you want. It was comfortable, too (and not much of a train, if that matters–I didn’t want one at all if it could be helped).

I have seen V9462 (the last dress) on someone and it looked great! Hard to say how it would look on just anyone, but it’s a pretty dress.

I am a procrastinator by nature, so my mom was worried I’d ordered my dress too late (even though I did have it picked out). Invites went out at the last possible moment, we didn’t do STD’s because it was too late, etc. And guess what? Everyone showed up that we wanted to see and we’re married! Hallelujah!

Fallon says:

I just don’t want to deal with flowers and decor. I know I’m running out of time with just 5 months but I don’t want to deal with it. I’m afraid I didn’t budget enough money for flowers.

wow i feel so much better after reading your post! i actually have gone dress shopping, to 4 different shops, tried on dozens of dresses & STILL have to respond, “no, i do not have a dress yet”… therefore I still get the paranoid ‘dont you know dresses take forever to come in?!’ speech. it was really bad when i had to explain to a bridal consulant that i got engaged LAST december not this december & yet still didnt have a dress for june- she made it feel so embarrassing. i also made an appointment at DB this weekend & hopefully will leave with a decision on both my dress & my BM’s dresses. good luck to both of us!

Just to let you know the $99 sale at David’s isn’t as “urgent” as they make it seems. It gets extended ALL the time and they have it almost all the time! If they don’t have it the week you go, wait like two weeks they will probably have it going again.

OR they will have their $200 off sale which also goes on all the time. It’s not $99 but I believe that the $99 dress selection is slim anyway.

I got my dress at David’s and they kept pushing that the sale was going to be over, but I waited anyway and sure enough two months later the sale had been extended twice, stopped, and then started again a week later!

i love that last dress! I think its good you waited (or put it on the back burner - however you look at it!), i really don’t agree with all the fuss about getting the dress a whole year in advance - i hate waiting for it, i want it NOW!

i’m putting off getting a DJ - i really don’t want one - but fiance does.

I got my dress at DB and loved it (as well as DH!). It was similar to T8772, but not as floaty (hard to explain). It was perfect for the style of wedding I wanted and I got a ton of compliments. Plus DH loved that I paid only $350 for it. Can’t beat it.
The biggest selling point for me was that it was so light and comfortable. I had no problem wearing it for 12+ hours.
BTW–the $99 sale is just for certain dresses. All of the others are anywhere between $50-$150 off the original price.
Also, like peanut says, they have these every 6 weeks or so. (I got mine in mid-March of last year.)
HTH!

gkim, that is VERY sweet of you, thank you!! Unfortunately, I am looking for a larger size than the typical bride :) But so nice of you to offer!!

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that put it off. Actually, SINCE I made my appointment, even MORE people have been scolding me for not doing it sooner.

But I think it’ll be great, and I’ll definitely post pictures if I can get away with taking them! :)

Liz says:

Miss Bubblegum -

I as well bought my dress at David’s and I loved it. My only advice - if you have dresses you’re interested in trying, take a copy so they can bring those to you. The girl who helped me couldn’t get my taste down, so eventually my mom and I picked out three dresses we liked, and I chose one of those!

Also, to echo other brides - the ones on sale are not the ones on the website. They have a special rack for those! You can look at them when you go in!

Good luck!!!!!!

I tried the first dress on and was surprised by how much I liked it. As a warning, it’s a little hard to walk/sit in.
