Christmas Gift

January 4th, 2008 @ 1:25 pm by Ms. Dahlia

(I know that this post would have been better last week, but life was really hectic with all the travel. And it is still Christmastide according to the church calendar.)

Little known secret: Mr. Dahlia makes sourdough bread about once a week. To do this, he has been using this mixer from his grandmother. (He also makes kolach/kalac and nut roll. Yes, he is Hungarian.)

The ubiquitous Kitchenaid artisan mixer can be found here.

The thing is, both of us grew up with families that cooked and baked a ton. Both of our mothers have burned out multiple mixers. (For my mom, it was typically during Christmas cookie baking; my family’s sugar cookie dough is tough on mixers.)

Sure enough, over the holidays, I made those sugar cookies, and the gears started grinding. (It wasn’t even a double batch! No way would this mixer last through kids. No way.) It hasn’t seized yet, but it sounds like weekly sourdough bread and holiday cookies have begun to wear it out. So we decided to go industrial strength (like our moms) and put this on our registry.

.

Mr. Dahlia’s mom a long time ago said that she would be getting us the mixer for the wedding. But she didn’t wait until the wedding; waiting for us under the Christmas tree this past holiday was a giant box.

It was the mixer.

Both of us were so excited about getting this piece of kitchen equipment. I don’t think that we jumped up and down when we got it, but that’s what it felt like.

I know we can’t be the only people who wanted to skip around after getting a mixer. What wedding gift have you received that made you jump for joy?

We jumped for joy about our mixer too. It’s the same story, we were told we would be getting the Artisan for the wedding and there it was under the Christmas tree!

A mixer is exactly what made me jump for joy. Tea, my story is similar to yours…I busted my mom’s making the royal icing for a gingerbread house, and I got the lift handle one as well. My favorite part? Being able to walk away from it while it’s going.

I want one!! It was on our registry - but after hearing the then FI complain everyday about it being on the registry - I finally took it off :( He just could not understand why we needed something that cost so much money that would rarely be used. I still want one! (Funny - if we had gotten it - we were both unbeknownst to the other going to keep a little tab to prove the other wrong. Me - tracking how often I used it. Him - tracking home many days I didn’t use it)

Oh well - we were pretty excited to get a our red simple human trashcan! With dogs and trashcan with a lid is a must!!!

We also spent a good bit of our wedding cash on a new canoe :) woot woot!

That’s what I want too! My engaged cousin got one from her FMIL, who apparently found it for $150.

We were hoping to get the one from Costco. But they seem different than ones from other stores. Anyone know more about that?

i’ve had the professional kitchenaid since i graduated from college, so for the wedding one of the exciting gifts was my kitchenaid food processor!! at first i wasn’t sure how much i’d use it, but i’ve made soo many things -hummus, butternut squash soup, carrot cake, pignoli cookies, pastry crust, and more!

We got the same super-duper KitchenAid as you for our engagement party. I was so so so excited about it at first because I am a heavy duty baker… but now I find that I rarely use it, except when I’m making bread or pizza dough. Personally, for cookies and cakes and everything else I bake (and I bake ALL THE TIME), I still always wind up either mixing by hand or using my handheld mixer. I tend to find that cookies and cakes come out too dense if they’re mixed with a stand mixer, because people go overboard with the mixing capacity. Oh, well. I guess mine will just last longer then since I use it less frequently.

I pine for my stand mixer! I’m also pretty excited about the prospect of getting our china. I realize we probably won’t use it regularly, but it’s sooooo pretty.

I was definitely MOST excited the day I got my red kitchenaid stand mixer!! (What is it about that piece of machinery??) Surprisingly, over the past 5 months, I have used it about 6 or 7 times, which I think is pretty darn good! Mr. E was quite surprised that I use it as frequently as I do!

I got a kitchenaid stand mixer for Christmas too! It was my big gift from my mother-in-law. I tried it out for the first time today and have bread rising in the kitchen right now. LOVE it!

I have a cuisinart mixer that is from the 1950s that works perfectly, however I don’t make weekly bread. Anyway, we got 2 pieces of All Clad for xmas and did a little happy dance ourselves.

The Mixer! (The Artisan, not the industrial.) Love, love, love, love, love it!

Emily, I saw the Costco one too — I didn’t stop to look closely, but if you are uneasy, I’d just get it at Williams-Sonoma or Macy’s or somewhere…at our Costco, anyway, it was only like $10 less. (Hubs said, “They’re like Apple — they don’t lower their price for anyone!”)

Has anyone gotten any of the attachments? (Ice-cream maker, meat grinder…) Any particular favorites?

Ooh, to have the Kitchenaid stand mixer… drool. the mister has known that that baby’s going on the registry immediately, and he’s excited about it too, mostly because I think he’s tired of me getting stars in my eyes every time I see one. :)

There is one on my registry… a nice red artisan. I rarely make anything with over 8 cups of flower and that one can handle 9, according to the rep who was at Bloomingdale’s when we registered. I’ve got my fingers, and all of my toes crossed to receive it !

the artisan mixer is on my registry too. :) my mom and both grandmas have one, and love theirs, and i wanted one SO BAD. my best friend threw me a surprise bridal shower last week, and i was informed that someone bought the mixer, but it will be showing up in the future… i don’t know who or when!! i’m just going a happy dance that i’m getting it. :)

i really want a dyson, too, but i think that might be a bit greedy, heh.
