I Heart The Violet Hour

January 4th, 2008 @ 4:31 pm by Mrs. Peacock

There is a GORGEOUS bar in Chicago that I have been itching to get back to- the Violet Hour. The whole time I was there I could not stop thinking about the amazing wedding reception that I could throw there. Talk about design inspiration! When I saw photos on Apartment Therapy- Chicago I could hardly contain myself. One day, I will have a room that looks just like this:

It reminds me of Versailles. I love those deep blue velvet curtains and the white framing on the walls. If I were to plan a wedding reception there, I would swap out those tall, dark chairs for cozy white couches. The flowers would be soft pink with hints of silver like this bouquet from housemartin.

If you have not been and you live in Chicago, you need to go. If you have not been to Chicago… well, you are missing out on many levels! The customer service at Violet Hour unreal- the doorman apologized for not being able to seat us, then escorted us inside to a spot at the bar and handed us a menu. The drinks are original and delicious. I am looking for an excuse to go back!

Thanks for the heads up! It looks like a very cool place, and it’s just up the street from me so I will have to check it out asap! (I wonder why I didn’t notice it on my last walk up Damen?) And I just love that they took their name from “The Waste Land” - I heart bars with literary links. :) Thanks again, Miss Peacock - and thanks to both you and Miss Jasmine for all of the Chicago-related content!

Ooh this place looks great! I’m moving back to Chicago in March, and would love to throw a new (and nicer) bar into our usual rotation of Brownstone, Casey Moran’s and the Map Room!

I didn’t recognize the pictures because it was so late and mostly candlelit the last time I was there. ChicagoSarah- you probably missed it because it is actually hidden behind a nondescript wall that says “post no bills,” we only knew where to find it because of the line outside & doorman. I agree the drinks were pretty tasty, just so darn expensive (even for a city).

Oooh, the review makes it sound fabulous - I can’t wait to go there! I’m never down in Wicker Park, so this will give me the perfect excuse to check that neighborhood out. I call dibbs on the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich!

I would LOVE to meet up there. It is a little pricey… so maybe one drink and then we can go to Inn Joy around the corner?

Thanks for sharing — I’ve only been to Chicago once but loved it. I just sent the review to a girlfriend who lives in Milwaukee and ventures into Chicago from time to time. If there is a Chicago area bee meet-up, know there better be pictures ladies!

I wish I Knew about this earlier then I would have arranged to have my birthday party there. I hope to go there one day. Especially if there were to be a bee meet there. Has anyone been to Japonais? I’ve only heard good things from people.
