The Cake Topper

January 4th, 2008 @ 11:34 am by Mrs. Tulip

Mr. T and I aren’t having a traditional, multi-tier wedding cake. But I definitely wanted a traditional cake topper. To me, it’s one of those details that “makes a wedding a wedding.” (Huh, funny I don’t feel that way about the cake itself…?!)

Luckily, my eBay obsession comes in handy for vintage goods, and after a bit of searching we ended up with this $12 beauty:

Cake_topper

Biggest trick? Finding a couple that looked a bit like us — seems they had a lot of blonds (or, at least, a lot of blond cake toppers) in the 1930s. But this one is actually a pretty good likeness!

Are you going with a traditional cake topper, or something quite different?

I got my traditional cake topper off of eBay too! We’re having a classy Western affair, and it had been difficult to find a themed topper that wasn’t too cheesy. We found the perfect one on eBay!

That does look like you…wow. I love looking at old cake toppers. I have a 1920’s celluloid couple and a 1950’s classic in my collection.

We went different…although I love the vintage! Ours was flowers with swirly wires coming out. :-) The cake was polka dotted, so it fit. :-)

I decided to use a figurine that my mom got to celebrate her wedding. It kind of looks like my parents and has their wedding date on it. I like it.

we’re using my grandparents’ cake topper from 1954. It actually looks very similar to the one in your post! Except the arch and support are in MUCH worse shape — so I’m hoping to perform minor surgery to extract the cute, vintage people from the deteriorating/asbestos-ladden parts.

I love that cake topper! That’s gonna look great on any cake… and it’s technically recycling. Yay!

We went with a little birdcage topper that had two little doves on a bird swing inside. It was cute and cheap. I desperately wanted one of the gorgeous Ann Wood toppers but it was not in our budget.

Can you tell us more about how the cake will look? I have a very similar cake topper and I’m looking for inspiration. Thanks!

Very cute!! I guess I went more modern with a pretty monogram type M for our new last name. It was simple and elegant just like our wedding…. and now it’s displayed amongst all my tchotchkes as part of my growing M collection :)

oh my! I bought the SAME topper on ebay (except my bride has a tiny tulle veil and I paid closer to $30 when all was said and done- score for you!) I still haven’t decided whether I am actually putting this on my cake, or whether I am using it as general decor. Right now it is sitting pretty on my bookcase. :)

I’m going vintage and using the cake topper that both my grandparents and my parents used on their cakes and luckily the hair colors match.

i made a cake topper of gumpaste flowers resembling those in my bouquet, with dahlias, roses, and stephanotis. it was partly b/c i wanted to make my own cake but i didn’t have time to make the one i want, so i asked them to just put icing on and i gave them the gumpaste flowers so that i got to do the main parts.

My MOH/sister created a cake topper out of Fimo clay that is a piggy bride and bear groom. “Pig” and “bear” are our nicknames for each other and the topper is so very cute. She also constructed a archway that has our flowers and a Claudaugh ring which is a theme of our wedding. I can’t wait to see it on our cake!

Congrats on the find - it looks like it will be perfect! One of my friends physically painted the hair on her topper red to match herself. :)

We did a monogram (first initials + ampersand). The only way my dad could remember my fiance’s name was by calling us G&S, so that became a theme.
