Married Pictures

January 5th, 2008 @ 8:33 am by Mrs. Bee

I’m so excited - Mr. Bee and I are going to take “married” pictures!

We never took engagement pictures, and the only pictures we really have of ourselves are our wedding pictures.  So with our third anniversary coming up in March, we thought it was the perfect time to get some professional pictures taken with an amazing NYC photographer!

We want a modern, urban, slightly edgy feel to our photos, and hopefully these locations we truly love will fit the bill!

1) The West Village

(The building they show as the outside of Monica and Rachel’s apartment on Friends)

We love our neighborhood, and it’s especially gorgeous in the spring when all the flowers are in bloom!  From tree-lined streets, to amazing architectural details, to the place where Mr. Bee and I had our first date and got engaged - the West Village is definitely an essential stop for our ”married” pictures.

2) The Meatpacking District

Located just a couple of blocks north of the West Village, Mr. Bee and I frequently have brunch along the cobblestoned streets of the Meatpacking District.  The main intersection anchored by the French bistro Pastis feels quaint and European, but the surrounding streets have an urban, industrial feel to them, as this used to be where all the slaughterhouses were located.  The quintessentially charming Pastis, the modern and sleek Hotel Gansevoort, and the surrounding gritty signs and buildings will all provide unique, contrasting and stunning backdrops for our pictures.

3) Union Square

When we lived in Battery Park, we went to Union Square practically every weekend for brunch and to shop at the farmer’s market because there was nothing in our neighborhood.  The flowers, vegetables, fruit, artists, and people lend such a vibrant atmosphere.  I had the idea of taking pictures inside Barnes and Noble that borders Union Square since we spend so much time there and Mr. Bee is such a bookworm, but he doesn’t seem to like the idea…

4) Hudson River Park

Our favorite part of living in Battery Park was that we lived right on the Hudson River and took many walks along what my mom called, “an oasis in the city.”  Water, trees, grass, benches, piers, a playground… so many photo ops!

I think we could also take some amazing pictures in Soho, but it doesn’t really hold any special meaning for us like the locations above do.

How did you decide where to take your engagement pictures?  Did you choose places that were meaningful to you, or that would provide beautiful, interesting, cool backdrops?

We took our engagement photos in mid-February of last year in the Meatpacking district, and in fact we started our shoot at the intersection in front of Pastis!! We got comments about how cool and quintessentially New York our backdrop was - and I personally love the cobblestones and buildings in that area. It was so cold the day we did our shoot - if we could do it again, i would do it exactly the same.

I don’t know how you feel about trekking to Brooklyn but ever since I noticed Love Lane (DUMBO) on a map, I’ve thought that would be an awesome place to take pictures!

While slightly cliche… I love pictures in front of the landmarks… Flatiron building, LOVE sculpture…

All are great choices. I am especially fond of the West Village. It reminds of my one of my favorite neighborhoods - Park Slope in Brooklyn.

Your pics and descriptions make me wish I lived in NYC - even though I’m an anti-city girl :)

We never took engagement pictures either - one we’ll have to take some married pics!! :)

This sounds like so much fun! We went to an arboretum… we aren’t HUGE nature people but I wanted the fall leaves. Now I kinda wish that we would have gone to more sentimental spots. I love all the sweet stories behind your selections!

We won’t be doing engagement pictures together- not really proper even though it is popular.

we took our engagement pictures along the hudson river park during sunset and then ventured over to soho area :) it was special for us because most of our early dates were spending hours there just talking and getting to know one another better.

Mrs. Bee,

I absolutely adore the Hudson River Park picture you posted. It is so beautiful there! Can’t wait to see pictures from your shoot!

We are going to Baker Beach in San Francisco because it allows dogs. My photographer and his partner are total dog lovers so it makes sense. Plus, the beach and having the dogs around us really reflects us as a couple and the surroundings we really like to be in. Laid back!

We chose Central Park because of the scenes from When Harry Met Sally. A lot of the backgrounds turned out to be mostly trees but a few things of interest were the Alice in Wonderland bronze statue and near the Boathouse where people rent little remote control boats on the water. We never made it down to the carousel but that would have been nice. I love your choices. Union SQ and the farmer’s market may be too crowded.

We just did a bunch of post wedding portraits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I love that place and there are so many cool places to take photos inside, like at the Temple of Dendur :)

The Boy and I met in New York and we both lived there about 8-10 years before moving out west a little while ago. Our wedding is in the south… and so is our photographer. While I’m super excited to be taking engagement photos in the French Quarter, some part of me really wishes we could have at least done those in our old Brooklyn neighborhood and in the Meatpacking district! Sigh, I’ll just look at everyone else’s pictures and pretend.
