Color, Revisited

January 6th, 2008 @ 10:26 am by Mrs. Cupcake

You may recall my confusion over choosing a color palette. Over the ten (eek!) months that we’ve been engaged, I have gone through countless color schemes. When I look at some of the images I bookmarked months ago, I wonder, what was I thinking??? I have changed my mind more times than any bride should, and I’ve been a little nervous to commit to a new palette for fear that I will just change my mind again. Now that we’re getting closer to the crucial time of color-based decisions (save-the-dates, flowers, etc.), it’s a little scary to think that I have to stay firm in my decision. Not that the wedding-color-feds will come and get me if I change my mind, but I’d like things to stay fairly consistent once our guests have seen the save-the-dates.

The teal bridesmaid’s dresses are a huge color-based decision which ended up leading me in a new direction for my palette, and, dare I say it, I think I have a winner. The chosen colors: teal and chartreuse. Hive, I now give you…. my revised inspiration board:

There are some noticeable differences between this board and my original board — the main one being that there is no longer any purple. Something about the purple was bugging me, and once I started to focus only on teal and chartreuse, it all came together. It is the unexpected and uncommon combo that I had been searching for, while also including two colors that I am often drawn to in the rest of my non-wedding-related life. It leaves room for me to add some small splashes of other blue or green hues so things don’t get too matchy-matchy, and I’m thinking of adding just the smallest dash of raspberry in the flowers (since I’m guessing there aren’t a lot of teal flowers out there, and I don’t want to only have white flowers with greens).

I think this palette is the perfect accent to my “vintage charm meets modern whimsy” look (if I do say so myself!). It definitely leans more toward the modern side of things, and I like that it will be a fresh juxtaposition with the other vintage-inspired details (like my dress, or our cut glass centerpieces).

Do you like where I have ended up after my color conundrum? How many color revisions have you gone through before you were satisfied?

I think this is gorgeous! I love those colors together. It does remind me of your last one, which makes me think that you will stick to it! I went through so many color ideas and they were all so different. There are so many great ideas out there, it can be tough to pick one (if you are having fun with it).

This is so funny–I was watching the football playoffs last night and these are the Seattle Seahawks colors. I was thinking how much I loved that teal color and wondering if it would work as a wedding palette. I think you’ve just shown it works beautifully!!

How funny! When I opened up the page to write a comment about the inspiration board being very reminiscent of the beautiful colors of a peacock, the first thing I see is Miss Peacock’s icon! I think it’s simply lovely

Yes - I totally feel your pain. I have yet to pick and stick with colors as well. I also love how the colors are very peacock-ish. Very pretty indeed!

The funny thing is, when I first found out I was going to be a bee, I liked the name Miss Peacock but it was already taken :-) Looks like I just can’t get away from the peacock colors that I love!

why do you have to commit to a color? I think I am missing a bride gene or something.

I had trouble with color as well. I chose robin’s egg & champagne gold, but snuck in some peach & pink accents

In my opinion, you DO NOT need to commit to colors, it just makes it easier when you have to make decisions on flowers, invites, etc. When there are a million options, it can help to have a direction.

Agreed, you don’t have to have a color palette, but I think that color tends to set the tone for an event, and limiting myself to a few colors to focus on will hopefully tie everything together!

I love it!! In fact, this is one of my favorite color schemes for anything, ever. I saw a really cool spread in a magazine with these colors. Wonder if I could dig it up…

Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

Ooh Miss Lovebug, I’d love to see where you saw these colors before…. but no pressure ;-)

I saw a great ad for ABC Carpet & Home (in NYC) in a random magazine at a doctor’s office a few weeks ago, and I am kicking myself for not tearing it out (after asking first, of course!). It was all teals and light greens and it would have added to my inspiration sources. Oh well!

Tea, one reason I think I’m so happy with this palette is that it’s not overly feminine. As much as Mr. Cupcake rolls with the punches and pretty much will go along with whatever I like in terms of wedding decor, the day should represent both of us, not just me, ya know? His face showed a little bit more expression than usual when I introduced these colors, so that helped in the decision :-) Not that I don’t LOVE more feminine color palettes, but I love that this one is not totally emasculating!

this is beautiful. and i like what you said about it not being emasculating. i’ve nto decided on a color pallette yet bc though i love the fall colors of oranges, reds, and metallics. i am keenly aware that this wedding needs to represent us both. so i am also leaning towards the almost overdone blue and chocolate. i’m wondering to myself if i do it, how can i freshen it up a bit…….
