Flowers…

January 7th, 2008 @ 11:13 am by Mrs. Milkshake

Yay for my MOH, who found a listing of what flowers are in season when - because I know nothing about flowers: some Californian wholesale company

This summer I found a house near my neighbourhood that had an honor-system type flower stand (think lemonade stand style) with nothing but dahlias! I quickly fell in love - they were 2 for $1, and I learned that the owner had over 80 dahlia plants in her backyard. I recently bought a house with a fantastic garden (I know nothing about gardening and am going to have to hire a gardener come springtime) but I wish i had 80 dahlia plants! My MOH tells me that dahlias are quite fragile though and bruise easily…so I guess they’re not the hardiest flowers for a bouquet…

I’m all about the “one flower” thing - so Mr. Milkshake knows never to buy me a bouquet, that I’d be much happier with just one flower that he took the time to select just for me. My flower of choice is always a gerbera daisy, but despite the fact that I love them, I don’t really feel like having them at my wedding for some reason. Maybe because I’m shying away from really bold flower colors… like reds and oranges all mixed together seems overwhelming to me unless we were to do a stark white loft or tent.

via martha. Is it just me or do peonies seem really easily bruised?

I’m still leaning towards the “dead things” for centerpieces, but then there’s still the bouquets to worry about. Although there’s nothing to say I can’t incorporate bell cups and other “dead things” in with my bouquets…

What kind of flowers did you/will you use in your August wedding?

we got married in september and used dahlias, they were GORGEOUS. the centerpieces only had 2-3 large ones (with lucky bamboo), and each bridesmaid carried 3-4 as their bouquet - the pink tinged flowers were striking against the espresso ribbons. i actually wished that i had only dahlias in my bouquet instead of the combo of dahlias, stephanotis, and roses i used. be warned: flowers that have lots of little petals, like dahlias or gerbera daisies, don’t dry well.

Dahlias actually make great flowers for weddings. They hold up well in the heat and can withstand being out of water for an hour or so while you walk down the aisle and take picts. They also come in these giant dinner plate sizes so they look fantastic as one bloom (best to support the stems fo these a bit as the floer head is a bit heavy for the stem), think a single large sunflower or calla lilly but with a much wider variation of color ans shapes. They can look flufffy or very defined dependign on the types. Check out Swan island Dahlias at http://www.dahlia.com. You can easily plant them in your yard and they are fairly low maintenace and bloom all summer and into the fall. The main thing is to water & stake them adn keep cutting the blooms. The more blooms you cut the more it branches out and more flowers you get!

I did all dahlias for my August wedding. They are actually quite hardy and looked amazing. We bought the dahlias in bulk froma local grower and did the arrangements and bouquets ourselves.

I have some of my pro photos here:

ooh! we’re getting married in July and are using dahlias for our centerpieces. I really want to carry just one large dinnerplate dahlia as my bouquet, but haven’t worked out the details yet. good luck!

It really depends on the individual peony. You can also try a hybrid tulip-peony. It holds up a lot better.

I am using dahlias as well along with roses (I love the classic look they have) as well as some calla lilies for the bouquets. Our centerpieces will have one type of flower in the same color for each table, so three tables will have roses, three will have dahlias, and three will have gerbera daisies. It’s the one thing about my wedding I know I want! lol

We are doing the one-flower thing all down our long tables for our July wedding… and this is random, but Ikea has AWESOME vase options- we got adorable ones for the one-flowers, for 79 cents each!

I too am all for the one flower goodness, and “dead things” as well. Our August wedding will have all mini calla bouquets, mine will also have a few fern pods (monkey tails), and our certerpieces will have tall pussywillow branches.

We’re planning to use dahlias, roses, zinnias and cockscomg for our August wedding–all in berry-colored hues. We’re going to float some of the big dahlias in large mouthed clarinet vases.

I used hydrangea and roses in my bouquet, just hydrangeas in my MOH bouquet and candles/shells for the centerpieces. I heard so many horror stories about how fragile hydrangeas were but mine didn’t wilt or fade until 2 days later. Our wedding was also outside, in the middle of August, on a beach! If they can hold up I’m sure your dahlia’s will (GORGEOUS flowers BTW). I wanted them but they weren’t too beachy ;)

My wedding is in August and we’re using dahlias, since the whole thing will be outdoors and I think they will match our style. Closer to the time, I think you can order them wholesale on the internet, but we’ll see I guess.
