Fun With A Laser Gun

January 7th, 2008 @ 4:57 pm by Mrs. Peacock

Mr. Peacock and I started our registry on Friday night. Although you wouldn’t guess from looking at our kitchen, Mr. Peacock loves to cook. There are just a few pots and pans, gadgets and utensils. Our knives are bad news. Every tool does double and triple duty. Because of this, we have been looking forward to registering for awhile. We weren’t totally sure of what we were doing, but we did have a few rules:

1) If we have it and it’s in good condition, we don’t need another one.
2) If we have never thought, “gee, I could really use a xxx,” we don’t need it. This came in handy with the ice cream maker/waffle iron/cappuccino maker.
3) We don’t need the most expensive version of anything. We made a small exception with the Kitchenaid mixer.
4) Just because an item is on the handy list of “things you should register for,” it doesn’t mean that we need it in our home.

Perusing the china patterns. Snooze.

Registering was kinda weird. I don’t normally ask for gifts, other than when I was 12 and I handed a Christmas list to my mom. It was easy to keep things to a minimum when we considered who would read our lists and buy wedding gifts for us. The most fun part of the experience was wandering around the store, talking about what our new kitchen will look like and what kind of fun things we could make with some gadget. A lot of the conversation was “wouldn’t it have been nice if we would have had that for the deep dish pizza you made the other night?” or “man, I wish Anthropologie had a better registry!”

Mr. Peacock and “the lists”

After we got tired of wandering the store and had made a list of the things to add via the internet, we had pizza and wine at a fun new place in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. We went over our lists- the “what you should register for” list and the “what you did register for list.” They didn’t match perfectly, which made us happy. Mission accomplished, and we had fun together while we were at it.

Any other good tips that I left out?

Are you at Bloomingdale’s in that picture? Mr. Jasmine and I have an appointment to register there on Friday! I’m so excited :)

Yay! One more thing of the list!

I think it is super cute how you guys made a night out of it…going for a fab dinner afterwards…

Those are great pointers! I would also add to check your registry in a month or two to make sure you still want everything you tagged.

Ooh, and what pizza/wine place did you go to? We’re definitely going to need a good meal after that :)

Angel- great point! I kept thinking that as we moved along. I also need to make sure that I update it regularly. I have a feeling that my family will be price shopping and not buying directly off the registry- clearly, not a problem, but I will need to stay on top of it to avoid duplicates.

Jasmine- that’s the one! We went to Pizza via Stato across the street. It was very yummy, the service was great and I loved their wine selections. The atmosphere was fun, too. However, the pizza is super thin. We were hungry again by the time we got home! Order salads :)

Oh, this reminds me that Mr. Chickadee and I have got to get on this soon! I’m sort of nervous/weirded out about it too…it seems like such a strange thing to do, making a list of very specific gifts you want people to give you. But it sounds like you and Mr. P had fun, and you’re both cute as buttons!

Our registry expedition ended the same way, over beers and bar food. All those patterns and paperwork made us dizzy and a bit crabby. Online is best. Keep it simple!

We have to register soon too, and I must admit I’m a bit nervie as well. We’re going to move a month or so after the wedding, but we’re not sure where yet so I’m trying to envision all of these things in a place that doesn’t exist yet!

We had wished Kitchen Kapers had a registry. They have such a vast selection - much better than W&S, C&B, or any of the department stores.

One of my personal rules is “no single use items”, i.e., pan for only poaching eggs, that toaster-looking thing that cooks hot dogs and warms the buns, etc. Eeech!

I’ve obsessed over our registry — I want to avoid registering for things that I don’t really need, or that aren’t going to stand up over the long haul. For kitchen items in particular, these have been my go-to resources:
1) Kitchen must-haves article written by a chef: http://www.slate.com/id/2167843/
2) Product review aggregator: http://www.consumersearch.com/

We’ve done most of our registering online, but want to check out some stuff in person like china, flatware and knives.

Chicago Brides the Bloomingdale’s Medinah store is great! I must’ve gone there 30x between our 1st appointment through post-wedding returns!

In addition to the large deparment stores for a traditional registry, we registered at two other places I would highly recommend.

1) The Chopping Block
We asked for gift certificates so we could take cooking classes together. We got so many gift certificates; people like to have a fun option of something non-traditional they can give you, I think

2) Uncommon Goods
They had some really cool unique things especially for serving ware. I loved everything we got from there and there registry was extremely easy to put together online
