A friend of mine only recently had all her negatives printed (after being married 2 years) and made parent albums. She did not have digital photos but real film photos (wow). After getting them back from the lab, she noticed large scratches (as well as dust particles) on her photos. It’s unknown yet as to whose fault it was but, there are large scratches going across her photos like when she’s walking down the aisle. Eeeks!!!
Just a warning, have a set of all your photos printed at a decent time. Even if you have a dvd of your photos, it’s a good idea to back them up somewhere as well as making prints. CDs and DVDs can get corrupt. External hard drives can go bad. Who knows, you may also lose web access to them someday.
She may be able to salvage some of the photos by scanning the negatives with a film scanner equipped with “Digital ICE” technology. This can identify dust and scratches and remove them from the scan. Then she could print clean photos from the scans.
