The Radishes’ First Christmas

January 7th, 2008 @ 2:57 pm by Mrs. Radish

Mrs. Radish here wishing you all a very belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Mr. Radish and I are just getting settled back in at home in Chicago after a busy holiday season filled with wintry traveling to our families’ homes in Upstate New York.

(The Radishes at a Christmas Party… clearly, Mr. Radish was feeling a little Scroogey)

This was our very first Christmas and New Years spent together as a married couple. We have been together for almost six years now so, honestly, it wasn’t that much different than the holidays we spent before we made our union official. Just a few subtle differences. There were many questions about how married life was going for us and if it felt different being married (our answer almost every time was “ummm… kind of”), and some of Mr. Radish’s nieces now call me “Aunt Radish,” which is totally cute. We also gave MyPublisher books of our pro wedding pictures (which I have yet to post on WeddingBee since I am such an awful slacker these days) as Christmas gifts, so that caused a lot of talk about the wedding and whatnot. Overall though, it was basically the same as the last few years that we spent Christmas together.

But - there was one very notable, and I think exciting, difference this year… we got to sleep in the SAME ROOM at Mr. Radish’s parents’ house! Woo-hoo! Though we lived together for about two years before we got married, his parents are very traditional so this was never allowed before while we were still “living in sin.” My in-laws’ house is in the middle of nowhere, and it’s always so quiet and dark there that it freaks me out and I have a hard time sleeping. It was much better this year to not have to brave it alone… and it made me really feel like we are officially married now ;)

(A lovely picture that my 11-year-old brother made us take… again, Mr. Radish does not look so thrilled)

So what about any of you newlywed readers - how was your first legal Christmas together? And for you brides-to-bee, is there anything you are looking forward to about your first married holiday together?

OMG, over Christmas Eve, Mr.E and I spent the night at my parents house, and it felt so weird staying in the same room as him for the first time! Before we were married, I couldn’t even take him upstairs to my (old) room!

Staying in the same room at our parents’ houses was the weirdest and best part of the holidays too

I hear you on the sleeping together in the same room bit. Before we were engaged, Mr. Shortcake and I couldn’t even watch a movie ALONE at his parents house without one of them coming down to “check” on totally radom things (”oh, just checking to see if the freezer is on…’) As soon as the bling, er, ring was on my finger, however, we could not only watch tv alone (we are over 13, yeesh), but also sleep in the same room.
finally.

Best. Christmas. Ever. Simply because we could sleep in the same room! Our “bed” was a bit makeshift since my parents haven’t yet purchaces a mattress larger than a twin, but I could have cared less! Fantastic!

LSB - I just clicked on the hyperlink in your name, which led to your blog… and it appears that your are from the North Country, no? That’s where Mr. Radish is from. How funny!

Jasmine - why thanks. The dress is Erin Featherstone for Target. It was only $40!

I am totally from the NoCo! We made a grand tour — NYS is large. Nice to “meet” another upstater — it’s what prompted me to comment ;)

Ha, what a small world. I’m actually from central NY, aka Utica. But Mr. Radish is a NoCo boy all the way. He will only eat “pure” maple syrup, he starting playing hockey before he was even in kindergarten, he calls a winter hat a tuke, etc.

My FIL was a math professor at Potsdam State (now retired), but for some reason they lived in Brasher Falls. I’m always amazed at how unpopulated it is out there.

Anyway, nice to “meet” you too!

Having the right to ditch his old ugly ornaments and style our tree how we want! Wow, I’m shallow.

hi mrs. rasdish — love the holiday “cheer” in your photos. haha.

LSB — HIIII! So great to see you commenting again on the bee — I clicked over to your blog and enjoyed it quite a bit. I’ll have to keep up with you that way. And if you’re in NYC again for work PLEASE drop me a line. I’d love to actually “meet” you for real. I feel like we’re old friends already.

Once we moved in together we were allowed to sleep in the same room (his childhood room with two twin sized beds, yippee, right?). The biggest change I noticed after marriage is that both of our tolerances for our in-laws have decreased…like I’ve subconsciously realized heh heh I’ve got him, so I don’t need to work as hard to impress the inlaws anymore! I know, I’m so awful.

This may seem random, but I think we are wedding soul mates, at least a little. I was pining for that bunny dress you’re wearing for months during a period of extreme brokeness. Good to know that someone deserving snatched one up :) I was just informed by Mr. Candy Corn that he has a “boy crush” on Mr. Radish.

I hope he’s not trying to tell me something…
