I present to you my Secret Santa gift to Mrs. Eggplant - a DIY Weddingbee-opoly!
I’m not a super diy gal like some of the tremendously talented bees, so please indulge me a little as I tell you about the making of Weddingbee-opoly! ![]()
I got the idea when I saw this Make-You-Own-Opoly game kit. But this version is quite different from the original Monopoly (9 spaces on each side instead of 10), and I LOVE Monopoly…. I just couldn’t settle for anything less than the original. Luckily Mr. Bee found a psd of a Monopoly board online, so I was able to make changes to the template instead of starting from scratch!
I renamed all the properties after wedding vendors. Starting from Go, they’re: Bakers, Bridesmaid Dress Designers, Invitation Designers, Wedding Dress Designers, Wedding Planners, Florists, Photographers, and Honeymoons. I changed the Railroads to Music - Ipod, String Quartet, DJ, and Band. And the Utilities Electric Company and Water Works became Videography and Lighting Designer.
Instead of Go To Jail, I changed it to Go To In-Laws and the jail now says Visiting In-Laws. You can see that I put Apertura on the board - a nod to the Eggplants’ wedding photographer!
Once the board was finished, we printed it at Kinkos - they did an awesome job! BIL Bee was a huge help with all the formatting because my photoshop skills are severely lacking.
BIL Bee also made the template for the property cards in Excel, so that made filling in the information easy. You can see a real Monopoly property card in the top left for reference to see that we made it virtually identical.
I used the existing Chance and Community Chest cards, but because we had renamed all the properties, some of the Chance cards were no longer applicable. You can see a real Chance card at the top and the 6 I made in Excel.
It was pretty tricky creating a board. I purchased this Tri Fold Foam Presentation Board from Staples thinking I could use the existing fold in the board. But there was no give and the Monopoly sheet wouldn’t lay flat when I glued it down. So I showed the board on beetv to Miss Flamingo and Mrs. Snow Pea who told me there was no way around it except to cut my beloved Monopoly sheet.
But we decided to cut the foam board instead, left a small gap in between the two pieces, and then taped them together with black duct tape. That did the trick! This is the back of the board:
And here it is with an actual Monopoly game (which I also included).
I purchased boxes with lids to house the tokens/dice, hotels/houses, property cards, and community chest/chance cards. The only thing I’m really bummed about it is I ordered a pewter eggplant charm that Mrs. Eggplant could use as a token, but it never arrived. ![]()
Here is the board and box all wrapped up and ready to go.
Both BIL Bee and Mr. Bee helped me a ton, and I couldn’t have finished this project without them. There were so many stumbling blocks along the way - as if often the case with most diy projects - and I ended up sending my gift a week late! But I was so happy with the end result, it was totally worth it.
I hope you enjoy playing Weddingbee-opoly Mrs. Eggplant! ![]()
