About Mrs. Cupcake

Cry Me A River

January 8th, 2008 @ 8:29 am by Mrs. Cupcake

If there is one thing that Mr. Cupcake needs to love and accept about me (because I will never change), it’s that I cry. A lot. A bit more than even the most hormonal average person, I think. Sometimes I cry because I’ve been running myself ragged and something sets me off, like spilling something on a favorite shirt. Sometimes I cry if I’m upset about something happening in my or someone else’s life that I can’t control.

My tears don’t always come as a result of feeling sad or upset, though — I often cry out of happiness, like if someone gives me a really unexpected and generous gift that I’m touched by. I also cry when I hear a moving story of overcoming great odds, or when watching a movie with a sweet ending. I am a little ashamed to admit this, but I pretty much always, always cry when watching any episode of Made on MTV. (You have to admit that some of those kids really turn their lives around and learn great life lessons! At least, that’s what I tell myself while watching in order to avoid feeling completely pathetic during a sobfest.) I still cry every time I watch Love Actually, especially when the little boy Sam calls his stepfather “dad” after he has victoriously talked to (and gotten a kiss from) the love of his life. I cry when I simply hear the opening credits to Steel Magnolias, because I know what I’m in for. I can’t always explain it, but some things just “get” me.

As a result of my tearful reputation, it is pretty much a given that I will break out into the “ugly cry” at least once on my wedding day, and I’m not ruling out two or three times. I’m sure additional less ugly tears will make an appearance as well. Luckily we live in the age of waterproof mascara and airbrushed makeup that can hopefully outlast my tears on the big day, but my biggest worry is that I will have red, bloodshot eyes for the rest of the day.

I wear contact lenses, so my eyes are already prone to redness. I’ve used eye drops in the past which have made my eyes not feel as dry after a long day with my contacts in, but the redness never really goes away. It would be nice to not be a bloodshot-eyed-bride, so I’d like to find something that is suitable for contact lens wearers that can take away the redness that will result from the crying.

Visine “gets the red out,” as they say, but Visine for Contacts mentions only lubricating and clearing my lenses, without the famous slogan. As a contact lens wearing bride, am I destined to be stuck with red eyes? Will using regular Visine irritate my contacts at all?

Do any of you contact-wearers have a solution to my irritated eyes?

I wear contacts, and I’ve used regular Visine with no problem. They really clear up the redness but don’t bother my contacts at all. I would try it out before your wedding though, just in case.

Hahaha! I totally love you for including a picture of the Beek’s ugly Dawson’s Creek cry in your collage.

I wish I had a ‘contacts’ tip/trick for you - but I don’t wear them.

I think you need to come up with a codeword for your wedding day that makes you laugh. Like ’snuffalupagus’ or something. Any time you’re close to crying your bridesmaids can bust out this word (or you can think it) and you’ll start laughing instead!

I cry too. All the time. Sometimes for no reason. My husband has now started to say “Are you crying?” often - sometimes my eyes are just watery - but most of the time I am crying. It seems I can’t have any emotion (joyous, sad, or upset) without the tears flowing! Most of the time I can’t even explain why. I think he sometimes gets frustrated - but he’s starting to learn it’s not necessarily something he’s done - it’s just me :)

I surprisingly survived our wedding day! I almost lost it in the ‘get ready’ room. (I was really missing my dad! And that ALWAYS gets me going) Then right when I started walking down the aisle I had a moment - somehow I managed to suppress the tears and survived the rest of the day! I really have to focus on my thoughts - and make sure I don’t dwell on the moments that make me cry - I just push them away!

Don’t use any drops that aren’t specifically made for contacts in your eyes, They will actually have a chemical reaction with your contacts - my opthamologist told me that my contacts will essentially melt!

I just learned from my eye doctor not to use Visine since it only constricts the blood vessels and can accidentally dilate your pupils if applied with your contacts in- and that does not sound good to me. I switched to Refresh (which he recommended). It is pretty good, a bit more expensive, but I have yet to try it after crying, so I can’t give any reviews for super red eyes. But, supposedly this is one of the best brands out there; they sell a sample pack of 3 different types for $6, which is what I am trying out now. Good luck!

I’d talk to your optometrist. I’d been having issues and when I told him he said he’d recently read an article testing optimizing comfort lens solution and lens combinations.
So I switched my solution (which I’d had for 10 years) to the optimal one and that definitely has helped with eye fatigue. The more comfortable your eyes are the less red they’ll look.
You could also straight out ask him if you can use the regular visine - on a one time basis.

I just have to say that crying collage is hilarious :)

And I totally hear you on the crying thing– I once cried during a Sylvan Learning Center commercial and Mr. Jasmine teases me about it to this day.

Being an LSU grad, I totally love the pic of the Ohio State people crying. But I digress…

I’ve always heard (and been told by eye doctors) that you’re not supposed to use regular Visine with contacts. That’s why they make Visine for contacts. But I will second Natakie’s comments about Refresh, specifically Refresh Contacts. My eye doctor reccommended them and they are a bit expensive, but they sooth my eyes the best out of everything I’ve tried. I’m not prone to get red eyes, so I can’t tell you for sure if it will help that. But my eyes get dry and irritated and they definitely work for that. They don’t just “rewet” your lenses like most other contact drops. HTH

BWAH! You used Beek’s Troll face! Classic! &hearts

OT/ I actually run an site for who you’d know as “Pacey”, Josh Jackson. So, seeing this photo is just sweet laughter revisited. ;)

And I cry like a baby nowadays for the littlest things. I swear it’s hormonal.

your friendly neighbourhood pharmacist says visine constricts your blood vessels and deprives your eyes of oxygen…..
but for one day……maybe it’s okay? i’d give the other drops a try ahead of time, but they don’t have the red-out drug so i don’t know how effective they’ll be….

Thank you for allowing me to make fun of the Beek one more time. It’s been a while since I thought of that episode, and that face is truly the funniest moment I have ever witnessed on that show.

Visine “get the red out” is ok to use once in a while but repeated use will actually cause rebound hyperemia- a fancy way of saying your eyes could get even redder. It could possibly dilate your eyes a little- especially if you are very fair skinned, but it’s unlikely at that concentration. You should talk to your optometrist about possibly trying a different type of solution or even a different lens. Proclear is a lens that has been approved for the FDA for use in dry eye patients- it’s pretty soothing even if you don’t have dry eyes. Hope that helps- I’m not an eye doctor yet but I will be soon :)

I’m in optometry school right now and most of the attending optometrists that I work with discourage their patients from using Visine. Many recommend Refresh. Also, you could talk to your optometrist about looking into a different contact lens brand/material. There are many new and improved materials that allow more oxygen into your eye. But I agree with what others have said–it’s probably best to talk to your optometrist =)

So funny….my husband and kids know when something is on TV that will tear me up (ANYTHING, from dog food commercials to reruns of Little House) , I am holding it in…and this leads to them pretending to “sniff”, and then the tears spill. They love me.

Thanks for your feedback, everyone! I have never heard of Refresh, but I will certainly look into it. It’s good to know that Visine is not a good option for contacts on a regular basis. I will definitely run it by my optometrist, too!

And I’m glad the Dawson picture gave everyone a good laugh :-) I just did a Google image search for “crying” and when that came up, I couldn’t resist!

It has be come a joke between my fiance and I that when I start getting teary-eyed and he says why are you crying.. I simply blurt out “Cause I’m sensitive.”
