Get Pinned

January 10th, 2008 @ 9:58 am by Mrs. Canary

To complement my dress sash, I have amassed a mini-collection of brooches. It was difficult to find just the right brooch since they weren’t a popular fashion item. Now they’re making a comeback! Some of my best finds were from vintage/antique shops. Other places I looked were accessories shops, duty free shops (in airports all over Asia!) and eBay. Like my dress, I just knew when I found the one. I also bought most of these before my dress arrived so I had no idea what to look for in scale and size… I just picked up pieces I thought would fit. I’ll probably have to sell off most of these unless I plan on wearing 30 pieces of flair* every day. *(Points if you know the movie!)

My first gasp-y brooch encounter was with Russell Trusso pieces at Gump’s, a department store in San Francisco. They were so artfully crafted and just mesmerizing, but each piece cost at least 4x the price of my dress. No good. But they make for some nice eye candy! Russell Trusso also has some beautiful necklaces worth looking at.

Here are the other ones that I’ve crazily collected while traveling and scouring eBay.

Pink and white flower bouquet from Korea. This one is really well made. I’d like to incorporate it somehow if not on my dress. Maybe in my hair? Or would that be too much?

Crescent with pearls and rhinestones from a specialty shop in San Francisco. This one is a little small for the dress but may also be another option!

Floral wreath with rhinestones from Shanghai. Delicate and elegant, but also a little small.

Gold swirl vintage brooch I found on eBay. Kinda cool, but the gold may clash with my sash.

Joli flower from Stylism.com. I really like this one, but it may not show very well because it doesn’t photograph well. It’s from a company called Joli Jewelry. The designer collects vintage enamel and beads and creates these awesome brooches. Her site isn’t up yet, but you can find her pieces in different web stores.

Floral rhinestones, a bit more abstract that I also found in Shanghai.

This one is another vintage eBay find. I like the design– very different, but since it’s older, it’s a little yellow. But it photographs well, and you can’t really see the missing stones or yellowing unless you’re up close.

The original! A gift from my fabulous dress consultant, Bridget. This is the original brooch she pinned on my dress at my first fitting.

Vintage shoe clip from an antique shop in Olympia. I absolutely love this one. It’s prefect in size and just ornate enough without getting gaudy. But it needs polishing and I’m not sure if it obviously looks like a shoe clip!

Then, right before my big vacay, MOH and I headed to the Alexis Bittar sample sale and found the brooch of my dreams. Perfect in size, shape, color, and detail! It was modern without being too weird or embellished. I fell in love with it and the price (70% off the retail price). I had been eye-ing Bittar brooches but wasn’t too keen on paying $200-400 for a brooch and couldn’t find one that would fit. Thank goodness for sample sales and older stock because this one is just right. I’m super ecstatic because it’ll also complement my Alexis Bittar earrings perfectly.

Here it is:

And in case you need some more brooch inspiration, here’s a great spread from Elegant Bride (Fall 2007) for your browsing pleasure. Too bad most of these beauties are way out of my budget… but it doesn’t hurt to look!

Now that the brooch search is over, what do you think I should do with the other brooches? Give them away as BM gifts (no one really wears brooches these days), sell them, or wear one in my hair? Anyone else a brooch bride? Did you have a hard time finding one?

I need a nice brooch for my sash. But it needs to be rhinestone-y to match my necklace.

If you want to sell some… Im happy to help you out!
Keep me posted! :)

love the brooches! I’m wearing my great-grandmother’s brooch in my hair. I did a trial a few weeks ago and it turned out great. You could always bring your #2 favorite to try out in your hair.

Wow, I thought I was naughty when I bought 2 or 3 brooches for my sash… looks like you’ve got me beat =)

I would pick your favorite extra brooch and have it pinned to your bouquet… and since you have so many, pin them to your BM’s bouquets as well! Love your final choice tho!

I am in love with the vintage shoe clip. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I say I’d buy it, but I have no other vintage details, so it might be out of place for me. I do like the idea of Mrs. Emerald- pinning them to the bms bouquets would look great!

Love the brooches!!! They’re all gorgeous, but the one you choose for your dress is just perfect!

And the movie is Office Space :)

I had a brooch in my hair and on my dress! I had the hardest time finding ones that I loved, weren’t WAY out of my budget and that looked great on my dress.
Yours are gorgeous! Congrats!

Oh…Office Space. Welcome to my life…

How heavy are they? Would they be too much for your hair?

I like sticking brooches on plain blazers and jean jackets. I have a collection of owl pins that I inherited from my grandmother. Coincidentally, my university’s mascot is an owl, so I try to sneak owls into random places. I even have a very subtle pair of owl earrings.

Miss Canary, 30 is the MINIMUM pieces of flair…

All great brooches and I really like your final pick.

Excuse me, I have to go put new covers on the TPS reports now.

Hahaha. One of my favorite movies of all time! Mr. C and I used to watch it together often after we got our first jobs right out of college. Every day felt like an Office Space day.

Thanks for all the brooch suggestions! I will most likely keep one or two. :)

I used a hair clip as a brooch on my wedding dress and the seamstress attached it with layers of what looked to be clear fishing line. It held up during the ceremony but started weighing down and falling soon after.

Luckily, Wedding Atelier fixed the rip and reattached the brooch extra-tight this time, so my dress can be preserved properly!

I love brooches! I always wear one on my coats, rotating through my collection. A pretty brooch on a wool coat can really help chase away the winter blahs. :)

I’m looking for brooches for the BM dresses and perhaps my dress. There is brooch there already but I might replace it. Or not wear one at all.
I know a few girls that wear brooches with their scarves and coats. If you did give them out as BM gifts I think that they would find a use for them.

I have been desperately looking for a brooch to go with my sash. It is a very wide sash and the rest of my dress is simple with no adornments, so the brooch needs to be big and blingy! Having said that, I’m in love with the shoe clip! How big is it and are you willing to give this one up?

I LOVE the flower bouquet from Korea. You should definitely try it on your hair. I think your final choice is beautiful too. You’re right about it looking modern but not weird. I also like your gift but from the picture of your fitting, it looks a bit small. Great picks!

Calgarybride: I have to measure it when I get home, but I’m not sure of the size. I think it’s about 2.5″ high. Out of the “reject” brooches, it’s one of favorites… so I’m not sure if I’m willing to part with it yet or use it for something else. I did a quick search on eBay and found these:
http://search.ebay.com/vintage-shoe-clip_W0QQ_trksidZm37QQfromZR40QQfrtsZ0

Some of which are very similar in style to the one I have. Let me know if you really can’t find something you like.

L: I love the gift too! But you’re right, it’s too small. The flower bouquet is a little heavy, but I’m going to take a few brooches to my next hair trial and see which ones work.

They’re kitschy but I’ve always loved costume jewelry Christmas trees (on black velvet):

I like the shoe clip. I don’t think it is obvious at all and if you use the jewlry cleaner you can pick up at Taget it will clean up nicely. If it is gold tone jewlry us the gold one but if is silver toned including white gold us the silver one as the gold type seems to dye the metal temporarily. I think it adds a layer of gold or something.

Thanks for the link Miss Canary! I saw maybe one item that could possibly work, although not as spectacular as the one you have. I must say that its a fabulous find and I don’t blame you for wanting to keep it for your own collection! But, if you do ever decide to part with it, please let me know!
