4 Days To A Tux!

January 11th, 2008 @ 2:25 pm by Mrs. Toucan

Aside from ordering my custom qipao, we also bought Mr. Toucan a custom tuxedo in Shenzhen. My aunt in Hong Kong recommended Cheng Shu Hua Tailor as the place to get all custom made suits, shirts and tuxedos. They were so professional and quick, I can see why! Mr. Toucan was measured one day, and the next morning, they were ready for his first fitting!

So… it only has one sleeve at this point…

Mr. T’s starting to feel awkward about people touching him.
(Note: The two men in the background are not touching him. They are looking at the tuxes made for them!)

Those are some large scissors!

Here, Mr. Toucan is nervous about said humungo scissors at his neck.
(again, the man in the background is not touching Mr. T)

Pinning the back.

Daddy Toucan also got a tux made!

2 days after this fitting, the tuxedos were ready!! Can you believe it?! 4 Days!!

I don’t have pictures of tuxes finished because I was told that I wasn’t allowed to see Mr. Toucan in his tux - after all, he hasn’t seen me in my dress! However, both Mr. Toucan and Daddy Toucan love their tuxes! Mr. Toucan said that it fit so well, that after the wedding he might randomly start wearing it to work! I really hope he’s joking.

The tuxedo jacket, pants and shirt cost a total of 900 Chinese yuan - about $123 USD. Daddy Toucan was even able to bargain the cost of his tuxedo down a little by arguing that he’s about 6 inches shorter than Mr. Toucan, and therefore he needed less fabric. Haha! Daddy Toucan is such a good bargainer!

Anyway, if anyone finds themselves in Shenzhen in need of a tux or suit, here’s the information for the tailor we used:

Cheng Shu Hua Tailor
No. 39 Electric City 5/F
Commerce Luohu Shenzhen

(No. 39 is the shop number, 5/F means 5th floor)

Wow! What a deal. I would really love to go to HK to get wedding stuff. I went to Shenzhen a long time ago and had 2 custom qipaos made for fun. I should have just gotten them in red so I could use them now. It really is cheap to get clothes made.

Miss Toucan, I love getting dresses made in Shen Zhen too! In fact, I went back over thanksgiving and had THREE dresses made in a WEEK. It was so tiring cause we had to go back (from HK to China) 3 times in a week but it was sooo worth it!

I was only going to get two but then my mom figured it was so cheap why not just get an extra one! :D

I so want to go to Hong Kong… can a non-native speaker do okay at the custom tailors? I would definitely try to learn SOME of the language, of course?

Beanchar - definitely. In Shenzhen, China it’s pretty much all tourists buying things (most of the shops accept foreign currency - I saw a woman pay for something using Chinese yuan, Hong Kong dollars AND USD!). While the tailors are probably not fluent in English, they’d know at least the terms in their profession. Also, I’d recommend knowing what you want, and bringing in a picture so you can clearly tell them what you want - though they usually have books of example, as well. Also, have an idea of what you should be paying. As a foreigner, they may quote you a higher price, and you may have to bargain them down.

Miss Toucan, about how far is it from HK (like the Wanchai district) to Shenzhen? We’re going to HK next month, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s practical to get Mr.GV a suit there or if I should try to find a place closer to where we’re staying. It’s hard to find a trustworthy recommendation for a place under $200! :-)
