About Mrs. Caramel

One of my favorite parts about our honeymoon was our trip to New York City. Why? Because it was totally spontaneous!  We had a layover in NYC for a couple hours, and Mr. Caramel’s friend asked us if we could change our tickets for a later flight to hang out with him around Manhattan.  We lucked out and found out that we could change our flight for the next day, for a $50 flat rate charge. *Go Delta!  However, to be even luckier… when we tried paying for the tickets later, for some reason they said we didn’t have to. ???  We even asked again to double check and to be honest people, but they said we didn’t have to pay! Since our luggage was sent to LAX, we only had what we had on our backs to wear. However, I was wearing my pajama bottoms, so I had to go shopping. (Yes, I really HAD to!) We actually had an amazing time for only 24 hours! (thanks to our NYC guide, who seriously knew all these cool places)

For starters, we shopped at UNIQLO — a cute Japansese-Gap-like store in Soho. The prices are about H&Mish, and the store’s selection is huge! I bought a hooded coat for just over $100 and some jeans for $40. The great thing about this place is that they have FREE same day jean alterations!

Of course, being a huge Sprinkles fan I had to try Magnolia’s Cupcakes…. and sorry, New Yorkers… but Sprinkles OWNS Magnolia’s all the way! Honeymoon Part Tres... At The Big Apple! : wedding honeymoon los angeles Censore05 censore05

Here’s a picture of us at Crif Dog, which is apparently a public hot dog joint… but ahh… there’s more than meets the eye! Inside there is a telephone booth where you pick up the phone, say your reservation, and then a wall opens up inside the telephone booth, and it becomes the entrance to a lounge/bar! Amazing. Apparently, lots of people have eaten here and have never known about this!

We also took a taxi to this famous cart that sells chicken & rice. We went really late on a Monday night and all these people were lined up in this random desolated area! What the freaks… However, we devoured our chicken & rice and Mr. Caramel still can’t stop thinking about it to this day! Too bad I don’t know anything about where we were, but you New Yorkers probably know about this! I think I will always choose “ghetto” delicious food over fine dining.

SO GOOD…!

Honeymoon Part Tres... At The Big Apple! : wedding honeymoon los angeles Z127849 z127849

I never leave New York without watching a Broadway show, and I REALLY had been into Ave Q - which is best described as an adult Seasame Street (pretty raunchy, but really funny!). We showed up 1 hour before the show and got GREAT seats! It was such a great show, I’m so glad we got to see it!

You think that’s all we did in 24 hours?! We also ate at a chic Korean restaurant (LA is way better in that department) and this popular hamburger joint. Plus we had drinks & treats at the cutest Japanese sake place that looks literally invisible from the streets! There are no signs or doors but you walk under these steep stairs and it takes you to this adorable sake joint where they sell special wasabi dumplings. WHEW, after 1 bite of that my sinuses were super clear! Again, I don’t know where we were or what it was called! I was just following our guide around and I was overwhelmed at it all! So now I can only selfishly explain how much fun I had without telling you where these places are. Hee hee.

I wish I had taken more pictures, but I had no camera or my clothes… or my makeup bag. It was one ghetto trip since I felt really gross from the long plane ride from Venice, but we had so much fun!

To be honest, Mr. Caramel and I are DYING to move to New York but we have no real reason to move. Plus we both just started new jobs and timing is a bit off, but I absolutely love EVERYTHING about New York! I love the diversity, the rush, the beautiful city & night life…. ever since high school people tell me that I seem like a New Yorker. So, New York– wait for us because hopefully in a very short while… we shall be there!!

Wow, you did A LOT in 24 hours!! I tried Magnolia’s cupcakes this past weekend and was not impressed as well. I can’t wait for Sprinkles to come to the city. You have to find out the name of that chicken & rice place. The food looks soo good! The Japanese sake bar you went to may have been Decibel’s in the East Village..not 100% sure though.

Brown Betty’s cupcakes in Philadelphia will rival you all! :)

Sounds like a great time in NYC.

the chicken and rice place is next to the hilton on 6th avenue between 53rd and 54th :) it’s yummy. i dunno how everyone decided that that was the best halal cart?? but word travels fast i guess. there are tons of halal carts all over the city but this one is THE halal cart~!

as for magnolia’s i’m not a fan either. i dunno why those are so popular.

Chicken and rice aka CNR as we call it, is the quintessential 3am after club hopping food.

soooo satisfying!

and I have to agree Magnolias isn’t great. For your next trip, try Sugar Sweet Sunshine in the lower east side! We might do a cupcake tree using their cupcakes….their lemon is delicious!

1. the japanese sake place you went to was decibel. without a doubt. steep stairs, the wasabi shumai. (btw they’re the microwaveable kind that you can get in a japanese market… ive seen them nuke it before!!)

2. im not a huge fan of anything sweet, but for the record magnolias was popular way before sprinkles was! hehehe

3. manhattan doesnt hold a candle to LA for sure in terms of korean food… but flushing is where its at. theres stuff there that ive never had in LA, and im from LA! i know i know, blasphemy… but next time you should definitely trek out to queens for some grilled clams, clam sujaebi, gamjatang, soju… mm mm mm..

4. thumbs up on ave Q - glad you got to watch it, i thought it was pretty cute =).

sounds like you had an action packed day!

I hear you, Magnolia is not that great and never has been. I don’t get the crowds, it is purely b/c of that show that shall remain nameless. Now BILLY’S BAKERY on 9th, those are good cupcakes.

magnolia (and it’s sister, buttercup) is terrible. it’s the driest cupcakes, i have no idea why they are so popular. i like crumbs better.

the hamburger joint you went to is either burger joint in le parker meridian hotel in midtown, or corner bistro in the west village.

you definitely went to decibel for sake. that place is a must!

the crif dog spot that’s behind it is called “please don’t tell”. just opened up recently, i’d say within the last year or less. so, yea - a lot of ppl are not familiar with this speakeasy-like bar.

i also agree that the city’s k-town is terrible. not flushing - but moreso, bayside in queens has better korean food. but, even so, i hear it’s not as good as LA korean food.

glad you enjoyed yourselves.

I agree with Sally - Billy’s Bakery is WAY better than Magnolia. The red velvet cupcakes there (especially if you can get it with cream cheese frosting) are to die for! They’re the inspiration for my wedding cake, actually. :)

We need to start an I Wanna Move to NY club. We can have weekly meetings to discuss strategy, location, etc.

I’ll always be an CA girl since I’ve lived here my whole life, but I would totally be the President of that I Wanna Move to NY club. =)

I agree with one of the commenters.. Next time you’re in NYC, definitely try Sugar Sweet Sunshine in LES.. Those are the best cupcakes I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to a lot of cupcake places in the city.

And if you ever come during the summer, go to Shake Shack in Madison Square Park (I think). Best burgers I’ve ever had, next to In -N- Out of course.. ;D

Oddly enough, or maybe not, the Magnolia cupcakes seem to taste better (actually, heavenly!) using their recipe (from their cookbook) rather than the ones they have in their bakery
