Venue Hunting

January 15th, 2008 @ 4:44 pm by Mrs. Hydrangea

Finding our venue for the reception was no easy feat. When we started to discuss what we wanted, Mr. Hydrangea informed me of his desire to have one huge room (ballroom) for our reception with 100% seating. I, however, had something completely different in mind - a more unique venue, where there wasn’t 100% seating, encouraging all guests to mingle a little.

We had a few locations in my mind from the get go, all of which did not work out for this reason or another (mainly either size or price). My mother and I visited so many reception venue possibilities in a one month time span, that we were quickly losing our enthusiasm for the wedding planning.

Because we went to so many, I’m going to just give a brief description of how we felt about each. I’ve also included links to their sites as well as pictures, so I hope this may help those of you in Dallas who are still searching!

Marie Gabrielle – Beautiful but our guests would be in separate areas (outside, inside, separate room).

Arlington Hall at Lee Park – I loved this one, but it leaned on the more traditional side and was very pricey. Again, our guests would have to have been separated in various areas.

The Empire Room – Great concept and great view. Very cost effective.

The Arboretum – Absolutely gorgeous, but communication with their office was lacking, so I was hesitant to work with them.

Hotel Palomar – I had heard only great things about the newly renovated hotel, however, I didn’t bother to check them out any further because it was beyond our budget.

The Crescent – Beautiful and popular.

The Adolphus – Great communication with this hotel, but it is also on the pricier side and I had heard rumors of ongoing construction so I didn’t check this one out further either.

Hotel ZaZa – Too small for our wedding. One of the trendier hotels in Dallas, I just thought it’d be fun to see what they offered.

The Old Red Courthouse – We received info from this venue, but the list of rules scared me a bit and I had also heard mixed feelings about the recent renovations.

Belo Mansion – We looked here several times. My mom and I fell in love with it, but Mr. Hydrangea didn’t like how our wedding guests would be separated. When we visited for a wedding, we realized that although the smaller room (there is also a huge ballroom) was for our sized wedding, we thought it would be too cramped. One of their salespeople informed us that the ballroom would have been too large, so we moved on.

Tower Club – Good pricing, great view. But it was too much like a country club in a high-rise and the feeling didn’t suit me. Mom Hydrangea LOVED it.

Sky Lobby – This one we almost booked. We loved the feel and the view. It was a huge room separated by elevators with an indoor garden and fountains on one side (perfect for cocktails) and a large open area on the other for the remainder of the event. In the end, we would have wanted to add too many details, and rentals would have been outrageous. That added to the food and beverage amounts would have made it hard. So on we went with the search.

Petroleum Club – This venue is a popular place for successful businessmen to lunch and do whatever else they do in Dallas. The venue also happens to run the Sky Lobby.

The Magnolia – This hotel was nice, but the facilities weren’t what we were looking for. The actual room we would use was located across the street and, while visiting, the fire alarm went off and construction was going on. While not the salesperson’s fault, we kept on searching.

The DMA – I just added this one because it’s so beautiful, but I didn’t research it any further. I knew it was pricey, with the requirement to get a membership and whatnot, but it’s a place that I would have wanted to check out.

Each venue could definitely host a beautiful wedding, but none of these were a fit for our wedding. I have to also mention that we are having our wedding on the same weekend as a huge teacher conference so, if the hotel couldn’t provide us with a block of rooms, we knocked them off the list.

Am I the only one who had to see a ton of venues before making a final decision?

Up Next…How we FINALLY chose our reception venue!

i actually went to a wedding at the crescent recently and it was beautiful :)
i actually only went to one reception place, we loved it, and booked it :) but that’s because we did a ton of research ahead of time and most places in the area we were looking didn’t have a reception place large enough to seat all of our guests

We’re going to try to book the Arboretum. They won’t let us book for June ‘09 until this May, so I’m afraid of slipping off their radar. So far so good as far as communication goes, though…more on that as the months unfold, I’m sure. ;)

we looked at at least 6 different reception spots before we finally found ours. Plus, we visited or went to service at 7 different churches before settling on a park ceremony. Since we were planning it two hours away (in FI’s hometown) this meant way too many weekend trips to the in-laws. I definitely know what you mean about losing the wedding planning enthusiasm. I’m so glad those decisions are finally over.

I’ve been to a wedding in Dallas before, for an old friend I used to know when I was growing up. I’m pretty sure it was at the Adolphus, and it was AMAZING! It was almost 10 years ago, though, so Lord knows how things have changed since then.

Wow…you sure did check out a lot of venues! Looking forward to hearing how you came to your decision on the one you finally chose! (We looked at a hotel, a country club, two different locations that are specifically in business to handle parties like weddings, etc…, and then found our location on a whim. It wasn’t completed when I went to visit it, but it was so clear it was The One even at that point in its construction! It was a new addition on a local brewery here in Kansas City where they had added party space and meeting rooms for rent to the general public. I’ve received nothing but compliments on the location of the reception, so I’m really glad we were able to have our event there!)

p.s. I agree the DMA is gorgeous. FI wanted a “natural” setting, though, so the Arboretum was pretty much It for us.

Ahhhh… venue shopping. That was the biggest headache of our wedding planning. Looks like you found some great places, though.

On a side note, we ended up going with a venue where we had to break our guests up between 3 adjoining rooms. I was so worried about how it would go over, but in the end it was perfect. No one complained at all and people really only stayed in their seats while they were eating. Otherwise everyone mingled freely and had a great time.

IF you are still looking: Did you take a look at the Hickory Street Annex in Deep Ellum? We are booked there for our May wedding. I am so excited to see a Dallas bride! Can’t wait for more info!

Amber - I was actually scheduled to go see them, but found my venue right before we went to visit. It looks AWESOME!

AmySue - Just make sure you stay on top of it and I’m sure you’ll get your venue. The Arboretum makes for gorgeous weddings!

No, you’re not. We sat down and made a list of every possible venue in our (relatively small) city. Luckily, though, they were easy to check off one by one, since only two of them appealed to us at all.

But you, wow - you’ve had some hard choices!

We looked at reception venues in San Diego, Temecula Wine Country, and Orange County - probably 12-15 places!?! We ended up booking our 2nd choice (hotel in Orange County) because of cost, size, and location. :)

My FI and I performed at a 7-7-07 ceremony at the Arboretum, and MAN was it hot! I’m originally from Dallas, but I’m not getting married there. I don’t know if I would’ve been able to pass up the DMA or “Old Red”! A girl I know just got married in Dallas and had the reception at CityPlace.

I can’t even tell you how many venues in Dallas I researched! It was the hardest part of my planning so far but I’m glad I finally found it!

I HEART Marie Gabrielle. It’s totally worth it, just to get Lisa (the sales manager/wedding coordinator) - she’s amazing! Mrs. Apple and I both had our weddings there!

otherwise, I love the Nasher and the DMA! Only bad thing is - you can’t have a ceremony at the Nasher.

I can’t wait to see where you picked!

thanks so much Mrs. Hyndrangea… I just got engaged, and looking for a venue has been the biggest headache of my life. Apparently planning my dream wedding based on weddings I’ve seen online not from Dallas was a bad idea! Hard to do an outdoor wedding here. The Arboretum was horridly rude/disorganized/and way too expensive. I like Marie Gabrielle, but worried about the size of the restaurant for how many guests I’m having… I’ll check out the sky lobby. Thanks again!

We got married a little over a year ago. Choosing the venue was tough, but we found the notion of finding an agreeable honeymoon location even tougher. Good luck!

We’re getting married at the Intercontinental because my mom’s familiar with their coordinators, but even with that we had to negotiate hard to get a good price for a sit-down dinner.

We also considered DMA (too much work from out of town), the Renaissance in Richardson and the Westin Galleria (renovations). My original choice, the Fairmont never called back.
