Fill My Cup With Cake!

January 16th, 2008 @ 1:36 pm by Mrs. Caramel

Since my last entry had many people commenting on their favorite cupcake place, I thought I’d bring up this new cupcake line I found yesterday at the downtown Culver City Farmer’s Market.  I was just browsing by some tables when I saw two girls at a cupcake stand.  One of the girls (who is really young and nice) talked to me about how she came up with the recipe, and seemed pretty anxious to get the word out about her new cupcakes.

This line of cupcakes is called Sugar Hill Cupcakes and since they haven’t opened up a store yet, they can only be found at the downtown Culver City and the Westwood Farmer’s Market. I grabbed a brochure and saw that they had some flavors I haven’t really seen in other places, like Nutella (hazelnut), Orange Cream, and Madeline. I picked up a Dark Dark Chocolate and my favorite flavor, Red Velvet. Their price is just a bit under Sprinkles Cupcakes at $3.00 per cupcake.

I had to wait for Mr. Caramel to come home so we could sample them together. The cake is very moist and pretty good - definitely not as flavorful as Sprinkles, but it has more flavor and better texture than Magnolias. I would have to say that they’re pretty delicious, and one good thing about them is that I can eat more than one! Usually with Sprinkles, after eating one I feel like my teeth are rotting because of the sweetness of the icing. The Sugar Hill Cupcake girl did tell me that their icing is not as sweet as Sprinkles, so it’s not an overbearing sweetness which I appreciated.

I asked if they make cupcake wedding towers and she said that they do! If you’re thinking about getting a tower or have an event coming up, asking a start-up company might get you a good deal. Here’s their info:

Sprinkles, you will still be the cream of my crop - even if you are ridiculously expensive. I still think the overall experience, packaging, professionalism and of course the DELICIOUS red velvet cupcakes are the best at Sprinkles. It is always a treat to bring a dozen to a party because of the wonderful packaging. But who knows — I may be biased because Sprinkles is the reason why I am even into cupcakes in the first place. If you wish to prove me wrong with your special cupcake place, I’d love to eat them and be proven wrong. shy06

Here’s the list of what other people have recommended to be the “best cupcakes” in their town. If you know any other places that you could swear by to be the BEST, please comment and let others know!

Brown Betty Cupcakes
- Philadelphia
Sugar Sweet Sunshine - NYC
Billy’s Bakery - NYC
French’s Cupcake Bakery - CA (Costa Mesa)

and of course, there’s the famous Magnolia’s - NYC & Sprinkles - various locations.

I’m so hungry (waiting for Mr. Jasmine so we can grab lunch) and those pictures are not helping. Think I can convince him to join me for a cupcake lunch? :)

THANK YOU for this post! I have to try Sugar Hill! I love love love cupcakes and cakes. Especially moist ones! I’m not sure if you failed to mention CRUMBS or if you just don’t like it, but it seems like not many people are aware of that place. It’s just farther down the street from (northeast of?) Sprinkles on little Santa Monica. And from what I hear, Crumbs is better. I haven’t tried Sprinkles yet actually, but Crumbs is pretty good and I think it’s pretty similar to Sprinkles. Huge cupcakes and tends to get sweet. Frosting is really thick and heavy. Are the Sugar Hill cupcakes just as big? I will have to try Vanilla too (thanks Cindy!). DOTS in Pasadena is delicious (mmm moist cake) but on the pricey end. Average size cupcakes (like the ones you would bake on your own) for $2.75. Worth to try it once, but I’ve only been there one time b/c it’s so expensive (I think about it all the time though..).

(Can you tell I’m really excited by this post?)

If I’ve tried one cupcake in Southern California I’ve tried them all.
Just recently I returned to the cake baker who made my fabulous wedding cake, where I wanted to order another cake for my friend’s birthday party. Instead of a cake she told me about her new line of cupcakes. And being the HUGE cupcake fan that I am I had to go for it.
Not only are they DELICIOUS, but they come in a variety of candy, cookie and sprinkled toppings and are STUFFED with frosting and/or filling in the center.
If you haven’t tried them you’re missing out. You have to check out her cupcakes and then let me know what you think. A Sweet Design http://www.asweetdesign.info
