What I failed to mention in my previous venue post is that I was 100% positive, completely adamant and dead set on not having our reception at a hotel. I had nothing against them, but it just wasn’t for me. Not only that, but I most certainly was not going to have our reception in a ballroom. No thank you. And, as I type this, I have to laugh at myself.
There has not been one thing that I have chosen for this wedding that turned out as I had first imagined it. As soon as we began looking at venues, everything changed. Our colors went from something more popular, to something that is a little different than traditional. Our traditional flowers became modern. My strapless dress became something else.
After the 15 or so venues we visited, I finally caved and started looking at hotels - mainly the W Hotel. Why? Because it is brand new and not many weddings have been held there. By the time we get married (or after I post this), it could be a hopping place for weddings, but, as far as I know, few weddings have taken place there thus far. I figured, what the heck, we might as well just go and see it and see what they have to offer.
Mom Hydrangea and I met there and, from the moment she walked in, I could tell she was hesitant. I love my mother, but this usually means she is going to be worried, and I am going to love it. The W is very modern with loud music and funky lighting. The décor is pretty out there, but it’s fun. And that’s what I want our wedding to be: F U N.
We met with Anne, who was awesome (and getting married herself, although at a different location) and she took us to the second floor to see the… you guessed it… ballroom. We walked down the long hall to the end of the floor where I was pleased to see a pre-function area. The left side of the room has floor to ceiling windows, which gives you a pretty awesome view of downtown Dallas. The space has built in couches along the back wall which makes for a fun area for people to sit and enjoy their cocktails if they don’t want to stand at the tables.
We then walked into ballroom and, to my excitement, the left side wall of windows extended all throughout the ballroom as well. A ballroom with a full on view of downtown Dallas? I was set. I knew Mr. H would like it, and the windows with a view satisfied me enough to know that I was in. Now we had to get Mom Hydrangea on board.
It just so happened that on the day of our visit, the W was doing a photo shoot for special events so the areas were set up with tables, florals and linens. It was great to get to see it all set up. I definitely think that this helped Mom H like the space even better. She knows I like to try to be different when I can, so she was not at all shocked when I told her I loved it. Ultimately, she caved as well and that was it… we had our reception venue!
I didn’t even begin to elaborate on the awesome features that the W has in our reception area, as well as the entire hotel. Here are a few pictures of the hotel itself. I’m going to try and get over there soon to take some pictures of the ballroom and pre-function area for you guys to see as well!
