An Ear For The Bump BA Bump

When we started searching for a DJ, the choices were unlimited. We had tons of friends who got into the DJ’ing business from HS, and continued it into a growing business from the club scene to weddings and social events. Finding one that fit our budget and had the ear for some bad-ass beat that makes you want to rip the floor up and shake your bon bon like no tomorrow was a different story.

Then I was referred to DJ Trick Vic by his older brother. I have to say I hadn’t heard him spin yet and wasn’t sure what to expect, but he fit in our budget and from his track snippets online I was pretty interested. Then I heard him live at a club and I was SOLD! I referred him to other friends who also used them for their weddings, and let me tell you, we tore that dance floor up!

This is how I want my guests and us to be rocking it, don’t you?!?! I plan to get down and “clean” since the ’rents will be there, but I’ll be for sure shaking what my mama gave me!

For me, there was one thing that really stood out - the CHEESE factor. I really don’t like dj’s that talk constantly and make pseudo toasts and all that stuff. I didn’t hire you to hog the mic, I hired you to spin the tunes! :)

So true. So true TriciaJ. I totally agree! Thats why we’re having separate MCs that help guide through the night … and the DJ can concentrate to do what he does best!

Our most important factor was the dj playing music that everyone would dance to, so we found two women that will play mostly 50s and 60s music - oldies, r&b etc.

i must be honest and say that price was the deciding factor for me.

my aunt BIL will be dj’ing for us. i have never heard him before. have no idea whether he is “good” or not.

all i know is that he is a professional dj (i should google him, this just occurred to me, lol) and he’s costing me $150, lol…..

There is no license or official certification to be a DJ. Just about anybody can buy some cheap equipment and claim they are one. And being affiliated with a DJ organization like the ADJA or NAME is no guarantee of experience or competence. Thats just a function of sending in a application and membership fee!

I think the BEST way to find a good DJ is word of mouth referral. Either through friends, family or the facility that is hosting your reception. You still have to do the legwork and interview at least 3 DJs in person. That should give you a good representation of what is available and some options.

I would be wary of large DJ companies that have a stable of DJs. You are not likely to get the same level of personal service that you would from a small company or owner/operator. On any given day they may have a bunch of weddings going on at once- your is just ONE of the many.

Rock on!
