Mrs. Milkshake's Picture
Mrs. Milkshake, Seattle/Vancouver, BC Age and Occupation: 23, Pharmacist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Pharmacist Engagement Date: May 2007 Wedding Date: August 2008 Blogging Since: December 6, 2007 Venue: Victorian Mansion About Me: Despite the fact that I’ve invested many long years of my life studying the sciences in college, I’m glad to be out of there and I would never do it again! I’m super artsy at heart - I run an indie craft site, I grew up shooting and developing my own film, doing jazz and ballet, and the whole gamut of art classes. I’ve been called a Jane of all Trades… but I was also told many years ago not to make my passion my career because it’d suck the fun out of it. Hence my choice of day job. We live in Seattle but are having our wedding in Canada to be fair to all our family and friends.
About Mrs. Milkshake

Gowns In And Around Seattle

January 17th, 2008 @ 4:07 pm by Mrs. Milkshake

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last wedding dress post. I had hoped to pick between those three dresses and call it a day, but I got the nay from my MOH so it’s back to the drawing board. I had a jam packed day yesterday that included three wedding gown shoppes and walking blocks and blocks and blocks around downtown Seattle since I was too cheap to pay for parking.

So here’s my experience at La Belle Slaine’s, which is right by the Space Needle in Seattle. The shop is worth going to just for the fact that they have a runway you can model on for your bridesmaids/mom/whoever you bring along.

I apologize that I can’t name the designers of these dresses I tried on because I lost the little business card they were written down on, but these are the lines they carry:
labelle

DSC06150The dressing room I used had a window, so I was able to make use of natural light to get decent photos (which I took secretly, shh). I liked this Jim Hjelm piece the best - but it’s huge on me and the breast-peaks on the bodice don’t hit me in the right place. The picture doesn’t make it look overly fabulous, but it’s simple, understated, and elegant, and the train ruffles along the ground in an exciting ripply way.

Another place I stopped into was Cynderellie’s Closet, in Edmonds, WA, just 15-20 minutes north of Seattle. Notable lines in their collection include the oh so affordable Maggie Sottero, and Casablanca. In fact - if you’re not from Seattle, and you’re looking for affordable dresses that are in the same price range as David’s Bridal- check out those links of the gowns they carry and find some local stores in your area.

This dress is such a score. It’s got a beautiful trumpet bottom….and….it’s only $329!!! To me that’s totally unbelievable, because that’s the price of a lot of ill-fitting bridesmaids dresses!

Because every shop has a cute little number that I always try on just for fun:

I love Maggie Sotterro because where else can you get a gorgeous dress that laces up the back for under $1K? Not only that, but her taffeta has this really great tactile quality that doesn’t scream tacky, and I think these dresses would be perfect for trash the dress shoots because they’d probably be the most washable. This dress below, called Vernice, is one of her few that is available in silk for an affordable $799, or tafetta for $499. I seriously can’t get over these prices.

And here’s the fabulous firecracker of a lady that works nights so busy brides can try on dresses till 8pm on most weekdays! They have great (clean!) seamless boustiers, they don’t work on commission, and this saleslady was a hoot to work with! I had a fabulous time at this store and definitely recommended dropping by. They’re camera friendly (always a plus), and I can’t say enough about the lines they carry. They even restored my faith in mono-chromatic bridesmaids dresses, but that’s for another post.

You are lucky you got to take pics at La Belle Elaine’s! I never had a chance because my “bridal consultant” was always with me. I agree though, the runway is the best!

The Jim Hjelm looks great on you!

They are all pretty dresses that look gorgeous on you–I think when it comes down to decision time you’ll just have to pick the one that you *like* the most! You look great in them all so don’t worry about that aspect one bit–just pick the dress that you feel happiest in.

Good luck!!

I love, love, love the $329 dress. It is so flattering on you - like it was custom designed for your body.

I also really like the way the second maggie fits you.

I think the jim hjelm dress is stunning on you, as well as the one for $329! then you could splurge on accessories and shoes! I think the maggie dresses are too much material for you? You are so tiny, definitely go with figure-hugging gorgeous mermaid/trumpet style. Sorry, a little jealous!

I, too, was shocked with the Maggie Sottero dresses when I went shopping — she has so many stunning dresses, and they are all so affordable!

I went to Cynderellie’s Closet too and had the BEST experience. I did not however buy my dress there, because I ordered it on line for less. But if I could have ordered my dress there I would have! The staff was AMAZING and helpful. The owner was there that day and she even helped me. I was so impressed.

I love Maggie dresses. I am wearing Maggie’s “Sonya” and just love it! I say go Maggie!

Holy smokes, you look great in *all* of those dresses. You make me SICK! :P:P:P

Honestly, I love blogging brides like you, because I don’t love anything more than gratuitous dress shopping posts…and you’ve posted so many photos! *swoon!*

Any dress you choose is going to be utterly wonderful, it seems. But I have to say that the $329 trumpet number you posted above? I love that one more than all the rest of them. It’s gorgeous!

tee hee I got my dress from La Belle and I took secret pictures too. I totally understand the rule but it is way to big of a purchase to not be able to take a picture or two!
One note about them is they dont tell you when you make the appointment but if you buy your dress the same day you FIRST visit them you get a discount.
You look pretty in all the dresses!

I love the Jim Hjelm… the fluted hem is gorgeous and so unique. But I also love the $329 one, and you can’t beat the price. That one’s Destinations by Maggie Sottero, I remember seeing it on the Knot when I was looking for dresses.

Wonderful dresses…. hmmm so hard to choose.
I liked the Maggie Sotteros I tried on too :D

Your hair is a similar length and texture to mine - I’m curious to see how you will get it done once you’ve picked your dress!

The dress you chose is gorgeous! We have similar tastes as I tried on many of the same dresses as you. I found La Belle Elaines to be a little high pressure. They kept trying to force me to make a decision on dresses that I just felt OK about. The consultant also never left my side I dont know how you got pics!

i agree with the folks who said you look great in that trumpet-hemmed gown. and the price is a score! do you remember who makes it? i tried on the Maggie Sottero “Allison Marie” gown (in light gold) not too long ago and even though i’ve gone to several other bridal shops to try on some other makes, i’m going with that one. it looks great on you, too! the sottero’s give such a flattering shape to the body–you can’t go wrong for the price.
